One of our connects already did one for us, but there’s nothing like having a handset (and a box) in your own possession. Also what our guy reported seems to be spot on: this thing is thinner, lighter, and a lot more pocketable than Sprint’s HTC Hero. The only other change, we’re told, is that the DROID Eris has a proximity sensor on the screen. We’ll put together something more formal in a little bit, but in the meantime check out a couple photos after the jump!

One of our connects just blessed us with a couple shots of the HTC DROID Eris and graciously unboxed the retail packaging. We could bore you with meaningless details about how the phone is thinner and lighter than the Sprint HTC Hero, feels much better in the hand, and is generally the best Android device besides the Motorola DROID our connect has used, but we’ll stop there. Enjoy the photos!

Thanks, Jon!

Well boys and girls (and especially CDMA BlackBerry-lovers), your much-awaited BlackBerry Tour launch date is getting closer and closer. To try and make it easier on you, we’ve got our hands on a retail Verizon BlackBerry Tour and put together a quick unboxing for you. Part 2 of our popular BlackBerry Tour review will be coming soon, but in the meantime, couple sneak peaks:

The battery door isn’t all glossy anymore which was scratch city. It’s got soft-touch rubber on the outer part and the inner part is a carbon-fiber material. Really, really sharp.

The dark chrome bezel which is also found on the BlackBerry Onyx looks stunning on the Verizon Tour.

The device comes with a BlackBerry leather holster!

You’ll have to wait until the second part of the review is done for more, but in the meantime, check the gallery!

That’s got to count for something? Since the phone isn’t activated at the moment, there’s not much to show besides some glamor shots.
Believe it or not, there is actually more than one Sprint handset being launched this weekend. No, seriously! Right on schedule, the HTC Snap has touched down in Sprint stores across the country and your pals at BGR decided to share a few quick unboxing pics. Courtesy of one of our ninjas, behold Sprint’s iteration of the Snap. Sure the pictures are a little blurry and sure it’s hard to get excited about the Snap when the Pre launch is the day before, but business users may be happy to see a pure business handset as it gets ready for lift off this Sunday. Hit the jump for a few more shots including a size comparison with the BlackBerry Bold.

We’re not going to lie — BGR definitely has its perks. One of them is that our pals from FedEx drop off a lot of packages at our office doors and today was no exception. Although it’s a Saturday, the FedEx truck just pulled up and handed us one heavy ass box (12lbs of heavy). Once we checked the shipping address and saw that it was from Rogers Wireless, we couldn’t help but tear away at the packaging. Inside we found an envelope containing a key, a compass and safe box labeled “Join the Revolution: 02-06-09″. Hit the jump for a sneak peak of what’s inside.

It’s fascinating how many people lust after gadget unboxings and Monday was no exception with some people going absolutely crazy over some not so great pics of the Palm Pre’s box. Well today a video unboxing of the Pre surfaced…

It’s fascinating how many people lust after gadget unboxings and Monday was no exception with some people going absolutely crazy over some not so great pics of the Palm Pre’s box. Well today a video unboxing of the Pre surfaced which is sure to make more than a few people wet their pants (or worse) from excitement. It’s not exactly what we pictured the first video unboxing would look like as it’s being done by a Palm rep at CES 2009 way back on January 13th (strange how it stayed under the radar until now, isn’t it?), but we’ll take what we can get and dish it out for all of the Pre-crazed nouveau Palm addicts out there. Hit the jump for the video.

Not happy to let the T-Mobile Sidekick be the only device to keep its name, T-Mobile has, as you all know, released the update to the Sidekick LX named… the Sidekick LX. Similarities don’t end there, however. We’ve covered the device a little bit but we’ve now got a unit of our own and in addition to some unboxing photos, here are some of our continued first impressions:

The screen is possibly the best screen we’ve seen on a mobile device. RIM really nailed it with the Bold and 8900 but we think the ‘kick take it one level further. Anyone who has used a Sidekick before will obviously be right at home. The main navigation buttons like Jump, Back, Menu, Cancel are all in the same positions and the trackball makes navigating really simple. What about the keyboard? Any real ninja (not you fake ninjas) will know that the Sidekick holds the title for best mobile QWERTY. Ever. It’s not debatable and you will be banned for making a comment that says otherwise. So how is the LX’s keyboard? Fan-friggin-tastic! Really, really awesome. The thinness of the device is much appreciated nowadays but we really wish they’d step it up in the application department. Apple’s App Store approval process makes T-Mobile’s Catalog approval system look uncivilized and down right stupid at best, plus, it’s not like there are any great tools to develop applications with either on the Sidekick. At the end of the day it’s about the OS and we’re not sure Danger’s OS cuts it.

As far as the social aspect of the device, there’s still some major idiot decisions all around. First off, the 6MB mailbox. Do you even want anyone to at least try and take this seriously? It seems like you do. You added Exchange support finally. 6MB though? Get real. The browser is still pretty horrid and with no other 3rd party options, you’re out of luck. As usual, the Sidekick holds the crown for instant messaging. Yes, it does. Now with photo support (something that should have been added long ago), too. MySpace on the Sidekick is crack (if you uh, still use MySpace), but we need some time to dig into the new Twitter app and Facebook app.

All in all, the key phrase for the last two years for the entire industry (minus a very, very select few exceptions) has been evolutionary and not revolutionary. In a world where even Google is having trouble battling the BlackBerry, Apple and Nokia champs, the Sidekick brand (or Danger, or Dangersoft) really needed to come out swinging. It’s a completely different landscape than it used to be when the Sidekick reigned supreme, and we keep feeling like each new Sidekick product cycle should have happened an entire cycle ago — not where the roadmap currently sits. We’ll dive into this thing and get a review going. For now, check out some flicks in the gallery!

Remember that whole Nokia flagship POS issue? Well, it looks like they’ve finally cleared that up. Ever since around 7PM ET they started selling the Nokia 5800 NAM edition handsets. What, you didn’t expect us to bum rush the store…

Remember that whole Nokia flagship POS issue? Well, it looks like they’ve finally cleared that up. Ever since around 7PM ET they started selling the Nokia 5800 NAM edition handsets. What, you didn’t expect us to bum rush the store and purchase one already? We’ve taken some pictures of the phone for you, and here’s some quick impressions on what we think of it:

UPDATE: Added a short video after the break!

When you first pick up the NokYA, you’ll immediately notice that it’s light as hell. You might even have to check to make sure the battery is in — yeah, that light. Once you turn it on and get it to use it, however, the handset feels perfectly balanced. Many of you are wondering about the resistive touch screen (those of you who haven’t played with the Euro variant, we suppose), and to cut this short, it’s pretty bad. You don’t get a lot of feedback from the screen yet light touches are not accepted. That puts you in an awkward position — do soft, or too firm? We’re not sure, but you might want to call up SelectComfort about that, Nokia.

As far as S60 Fifth Edition goes, it’s cool. The larger UI elements make navigating pretty simple, and look, at the end of the day this is your tried and true Nokia handset. Great phone, great camera, music, web, texts and email. There’s no really scrolling or flicking through things, and that makes navigating really difficult in the limited time we’ve used it so far. We’re just not sure people will lining up to snatch one up with all the other options out there. Full review coming soon, but hey, the party is in the gallery, not here!

P.S. The battery used in here is 1320mAh, not 1500mAh as incorrectly reported elsewhere before — sorry!

Way, way back in October we broke the news of Amazon’s Kindle 2. Seems like forever ago, doesn’t it? Amazon snubbed us at the launch event, but we’ve taken matters into our own hands and got a Kindle 2 delivered.…

Way, way back in October we broke the news of Amazon’s Kindle 2. Seems like forever ago, doesn’t it? Amazon snubbed us at the launch event, but we’ve taken matters into our own hands and got a Kindle 2 delivered. As we all have come to expect, the Kindle 2 arrived in its very own customized packaging. Occupying the size of a large hardcover book, the inside of the box and the Kindle 2 packaging was matte black with a slightly embossed Kindle logo and swirl of letters that typifies the Kindle brand. The contents of the box are meager — Kindle 2, power adapter, USB sync cable and brief getting started guide. Unlike the original Kindle, the Kindle 2 does not included any type of case or slipcover. All in all, much as you think it would, the unit doesn’t disappoint aesthetically. It has a nice rounded look and is amazingly thin, not clunky and awkward-looking like the original Kindle, and despite its diminutive size, it has a nice heft and feel to it. The only drawback from an appearance point of view is that the screen is eclipsed by the overall size of the reader. Unlike the Sony series of readers which have minimal casing, the Kindle 2 is dominated by the keyboard and large casing, making the screen appear smaller that it actually is. A small trade-off for including a physical QWERTY keyboard. We are waiting for this baby to charge before we dive into our first book but you can enjoy the pictures with us while we wait.

Today the HTC Touch from Verizon is making its way into the hands of the people. Surprise, surprise, one arrived on our doorstep as well and we did a quick unboxing for you! The Verizon Touch Pro differs a bit from its Sprint, Alltel and AT&T cousins. The Verizon version has a different keyboard layout that features a top row of numbers and directional arrows whose location breaks up the letters on the keyboard. The up arrow falls right in between the “n” and the “m” key. No, seriously. This does make it a little difficult to type at first but we found that we got used to it rather quickly. The Verizon Touch Pro also has a flat back cover instead of the faceted diamond style cover that is seen in the Fuze. Unfortunately, our concerns about the Touch Pro being crippled have been confirmed. The device does ship with only 192MB RAM which gets eaten up pretty quickly. The OS takes up 78.71MB, other startup programs and TouchFlo 3D takes up another 67.68MB, leaving you with a mere 45.60MB left for your own applications! Yes, we know that it is more RAM than is found on the xv6800 but still 192MB instead of 288MB is a bit disappointing.

The other disappointing, but not surprising, revelation is that the GPS appears to be locked down to VZ Navigator. We installed Google Maps and it just searched and searched for a GPS satellite connection. It finally gave up and told us that “Your GPS receiver is having trouble tracking GPS satellites”. No worries, though, as the folks over at XDA developers are probably already hard at work trying to unlock the GPS for us. The one good piece of news is that phone includes both an accelerometer (rumored to have been absent) and Wi-Fi. Overall, the device is still an improvement over the xv6800 but with its dumbed down specs, you cant help but focus on what you are missing and overlook all the good things you have. It is like eating cake without the frosting. It still tastes good but you know it could have been so much better. Definitely check out our unboxing gallery, but not before you hit the jump for some screenshots showing the Device Information and the GPS failure.

We actually weren’t even going to do an unboxing / first impressions post. Seen one HTC Touch Pro, seen ‘em all, right? Wrong, guys. In a rare example of AT&T not scumming down their devices (adding crapware, horrible themes, removing features, blocking stuff), we think they’ve actually made the device better! For starters, one of the most important things is the connectivity. The regular Touch Pro does not have tri-band UMTS/HSDPA support. The AT&T Fuze does. Also check this… on the original Touch Pro, there were no “OK” and “Start” buttons. A complete meltdown of necessary Windows Mobile functionality. Well, AT&T’s Fuze has both. Instead of the numbers being laid out across the top row of keys, they are in classic number pad format on the left side of the keyboard, and we’re actually really feeling the default AT&T TouchFLO theme here. They even made it so the Start menu was always visible on the home screen, too. We approve. How about a short, short summary? The AT&T HTC Fuze is the best Windows Mobile Professional phone on the market. Good? Make sure you hit the gal-gal for all the shots!

Note: we haven’t reviewed the Sprint Touch Pro, so we’re not sure if the key layout is the same, etc.

Well, this has been a long time comin’, hasn’t it? We just got our grubby mitts on that much-debated Samsung Epix i907 and boy… it’s thick! Counting out the AT&T Tilt, this is probably the thickest phone in their line-up.…

Well, this has been a long time comin’, hasn’t it? We just got our grubby mitts on that much-debated Samsung Epix i907 and boy… it’s thick! Counting out the AT&T Tilt, this is probably the thickest phone in their line-up. Now, you do get Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional with a touch screen with Haptic feedback, a QWERTY ‘board, optical mouse, 850MHz/1900MHz/2100MHz HSDPA and GPS. So, for some, that might be enough of a reason to overlook the beast-like form of the Samsung Epix. We’re highly disappointed with the screen in general as it looks extremely dated and pixelated — much like the Samsung Omnia. We haven’t had much time to put the phone through our rigorous tests, so check out the unboxing shots in the meantime.

Yeah, yeah, we’re a little late on this one, but what can we say? We’re in love. For anyone that gets a kick out of remote viewing, this little thing is bound to mess up your head. You probably know…

Yeah, yeah, we’re a little late on this one, but what can we say? We’re in love. For anyone that gets a kick out of remote viewing, this little thing is bound to mess up your head. You probably know all about it by now, but it’s a fully mobile 3-wheeled robot that houses a webcam, speaker, mic, and more. It effectively let’s you roam to any part of your office or home while streaming the video for your live, anywhere you are. Want to check up on that shady maid you found on Craigslist? Maybe you want to make sure the Time Warner guys aren’t playing Madden ‘09 in your TV room but actually working. Either way, this thing lets you be there when you’re not, and that’s pretty damn cool.

The packaging is a standard affair with the actual unit, battery, A/C adapter, USB cable, software CD, and charging base all included. Rovio is decently heavy and at first handle, it looks to be extremely well manufactured. Setup is dead simple, too. If you’re on a PC, just insert the setup CD and it will run through the configuration options. If you’re on a Mac, you can simply set it up by accessing the robot through a web interface. When controlling it remotely, you’ve got a lot of options including creating a path for the robot to follow, snapping pictures, recording movies, talking and listening to the surroundings, and even sending that little bugger back to its charging base. We’re happy to report that browser compatibility is not an issue here. On Internet Explorer you get the most options when remote viewing, but you can also work it reasonably well over an iPod Touch or iPhone. The BlackBerry Bold did not perform well in that regards. Make sure you show our unboxing photos to your girlfriends/wives so they don’t order you the wrong gift this Christmas Kwanzaa Hanukkah holiday.

Alright, these aren’t the first live in-hand shots of the BlackBerry 8220, but it is the first unboxing. And it’s a damn good looking box! There’s actually very little that comes in the T-Mobile box, just the device, battery, charger,…

Alright, these aren’t the first live in-hand shots of the BlackBerry 8220, but it is the first unboxing. And it’s a damn good looking box! There’s actually very little that comes in the T-Mobile box, just the device, battery, charger, headphones, and a USB cable. We thought it would have been loaded with goodies like a really nice headset, wack cool carrying case, lanyard, decals, and other nonsensical things, but that’s what the accessory market is for, we guess. As far as the device goes, we’re pretty disappointed. Not so much because it’s absolutely terrible, just because the Pearl Flip feels like a prototype and not a final build. Even though this is a retail unit. The displays are a complete letdown, and that’s not because we’ve been spoiled by the Bold. It’s because they are really bad. For some reason the outer and inner screens are pixelated beyond anything we’ve seen recently, and they are probably the worst displays we’ve seen on a BlackBerry since… well, a long time. We understand it’s not a high end device, but is there any reason this thing should be looking like it came out of 2001? The feel of the Flip is fine — it’s a little light actually — and when opened, it’s perfectly weighted. The keyboard isn’t that great, but who are we fooling. This is a phone for your niece, baby mama, sister, or Sarah Palin hockey mom. And for that friends, we give it a B+. What are you still doing here? The gallery is where it’s at, son.

After launching a mere week ago, Dell Mini’s were arriving on doorsteps everywhere Friday. As expected, it did not take very long for one of you eager, early adopters to put together an unboxing video. This time it is a reader over at Gotta Be Mobile who posted 12 minutes of brand spanking new Mini 9 goodness. What can we say, we’re suckers for shiny new ultra-portables.

The Nokia N78, huh? It’s the replacement for the ever-popular Nokia N73, but in a non-typical Nokia move, it’s actually available in a US 3G NAM flavor. Currently on the shelves at your local Nokia USA store, the N78 is the first handset from Espoo to ship with FP2. There’s a bunch of software improvement which we’ll get into another time, but our favorite one so far? The Destinations for Internet/WAP/MMS, etc. What this does is let you combine a bunch of your access points into one destination. No more of those annoying popup messages asking you how you want to connect even though you’re already connected to Wi-Fi and 3G. In terms of the handsets physical attributes… it’s nice. It’s a little long, but you can’t say it’s not sleek. A huge issue for us is the button placement. Granted it will take a little bit to get used to everything, but we can’t understand how in the heck that end key got placed on the left side like that. It is the most awkward thing to use if you’re holding the phone with one hand. Style over function, friends. Eh, there’s still a whole heep of function in there though. If you’re still in love, we encourage you to check out our hands-on gallery. You’ll like it. Anyone up for a giveaway?

You know we had to go and do it! In all honestly though, not that much is of interest with the new BlackBerry 8110. If you’ve been a die-hard Pearl user since the beginning and are in love with that…

You know we had to go and do it! In all honestly though, not that much is of interest with the new BlackBerry 8110. If you’ve been a die-hard Pearl user since the beginning and are in love with that SureType thing, you’ll most likely want to refresh your pocket with the 8110, but for newcomers in this area, it might not be what you’re looking for. For anyone that’s been following, the updated Pearl lineup includes a refined keyboard, external MicroSD slot, video camera, and a couple other features. Our recommendation is to stick to a Curve and hope RIM releases that 4.5 OS soon. That way you can make fun of all the Pearl people that bought it just so they could record video on their BlackBerry. We got a titanium version in hand, but it does come in a crimson red color as well. You know, in case you’re into that sort of thing. Hit the gallery for the unboxing pics!

So, yeah…we totally raided the Nokia Store last night in New York! We snatched up a brand new Nokia N95 8GB NAM model, or N95-4 for you hardcore Noke fans, and we gotta’ say it is awesome! Mind you this is our first encounter with the N95 8GB so those of you who have had the European model have experienced this, but combine that bigger screen, redesigned navigation keys, the awesome OS update (which is supposedly coming for the N95-3 soon), US 3G, and you’ve got a real winner! FlashLite 3 is the truth, friends. Only one problem we noticed, and that’s because of the small redesign of the slider and larger screen. It might be hard to explain, but when you slide the screen up, the slider rails are not rounded anymore since they have to make it flush with the larger screen, so the rails are a little sharp and uncomfortable when holding it. Small price to pay for one of the sickest phones this side of the Mississippi, right? Scratch that; $799 + tax is quite a lot to pay. Hit up our gallery for all the goods!

Yeah dudes, we actually have the HTC Shift in hand! We haven’t had a chance to put it through our normal tests yet, but believe we’ll have that soon. The Shift isn’t as big as you’d think even though it…

The Shift isn’t as big as you’d think even though it has a 7" screen, and the while the slide mechanism is not spring-assisted like the AT&T Tilt, it’s pretty smooth and solid. The low processor freaks us out a little bit, but again, we haven’t really used it yet. Hit the jump for the full unboxing gallery, and we’ll have our full review up soon! We’d wager it being $99 (how could it be more than Sprint’s?). If you want more Garnet madness, we suggest you don your favorite sunglasses and grab one of those airline-style puke bags.
We’ve professed our love for the Motorola RAZR 2 way back when we scored one, but this is a whole ‘nother story. We still have bad feelings towards Moto for the Dolce & Gabbana debacle they pulled before. If you don’t know, they had a super limited Motorola V3i only sold at Dolce & Gabbana shops, and they were limited to 2,000 pieces. A short time after they sold out, Motorola released a "different" Dolce & Gabanna V3i, with it ending up on T-Mobile USA nonetheless! Do we think that will happen this time around? Most definitely! Back to the phone…it really is a sharp device! The Motorola RAZR 2 Luxury Edition has 18kt and 24kt gold accents around it, a "snakeskin" back (which we thought we hated, but then secretly loved), and probably the most accessories we’ve ever seen come in a Moto box! They included the phone, battery, battery cover, snakeskin and gold carrying strap, snakeskin and gold carrying pouch, phone / screen cleaning cloth, charger, miniUSB to microUSB adapter, Motorola H680 limited edition gold and black Bluetooth headset, desktop charger for headset (with gold trim around charging base), USB headphones, microUSB cable, and a couple other things! If you’re feeling like you are special and deserve a special handset, we’d say you can’t go wrong with the RAZR 2 Luxury Edition. But, know that you might see it in peasants’ hands everywhere beginning whenever Moto deems it "reasonable". And of course hit the link below for the gold treats!

Here we have the WiBrain B1. It’s a new UMPC that features a 1.2GHz intel processor, 1GB of RAM, a 60GB HD, and Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Why does that really matter? Well, remember how UMPCs were supposed to "affordable"? This one is priced at $849, which we can’t argue with! It uses the split QWERTY thumb pad arrangement that the Samsung Q1 Ultra uses, but in our usage, it worked pretty well. Let’s not fool ourselves, it took some getting used to, but the buttons were placed and sized nicely, with awesome tactile feedback. See that word, UMPC / mini-Computer makers? Tactile. This has it, and even has a pop-up webcam with built-in mic which was pretty cool. The screen looked gorgeous with a 4.8" 1024×600 resolution, so the unit is definitely wide. It’s a real UMPC, so that’s to be expected. We were completely pleased with the unit, found it to be light and easy to use and navigate (especially since it uses a touch-pad for the mouse), and the price makes it all the more appealing!

UPDATE: It uses a VIA processor, not Intel!

We got a chance to play around with the new BlackJack II for the better part of a day, and have mixed feelings about the device. On the spec side, it has a quad-band GSM/EDGE radio and a tri-band UMTS radio for world-roaming, 2 megapixel camera, integrated GPS, full QWERTY keyboard, and runs Windows Mobile 6 Standard. We’re going to save our thoughts on the handset for our head-to-head feature story coming up a little later on, but if you’re feeling the need for some Korean love, the BlackJack II launches Friday for $149.99 with a 2-year agreement. Double check with your local AT&T store though, because they might have already received shipments and they’re allowed to start selling the phone. Make sure to check out the photo snaps!

We just got one of these in here at BGR world headquarters, and had a chance to play around with it. From early findings, we’re actually quite disappointed at the "noise cancellation" that the headset supposedly offers. Well, that’s CrystalTalk…

We just got one of these in here at BGR world headquarters, and had a chance to play around with it. From early findings, we’re actually quite disappointed at the "noise cancellation" that the headset supposedly offers. Well, that’s CrystalTalk for you, right? The great part about the headset, is that it is actually one of the most comfortable headsets we’ve ever tried out. We heard test subjects loud and clear on our end, but they could point out every time that we were on a headset. The verdict? If you’re looking for real noise-cancellation, the Aliph Jawbone is the only way to go. If you’re looking for something smaller, little better looking, and extremely comfortable (let’s not forget the two included stylish desktop chargers) the Motorola MOTOPURE H12 is a sure shot win.

What do we have here, guys? You all waited for it, you might even have shed blood for it, but it’s finally here in the flesh, and we’re super impressed! For starters, the early unit we had way back is a little different, and the changes on the new production unit are for the better. Let’s take the keyboard, for instance…before it was a rubberized texture, and while it was cool, it actually got in the way of speed-typing. The AT&T version has switched to completely plastic keys and we can bang out emails faster that you can say, "when can I get one." To answer that, we’re hearing the 1st of November will be the official launch date. We were a little disappointed that BlackBerry Connect wasn’t made available on the device like it was with the AT&T Tilt, but we guess it will come sooner or later. How about the speakers? I think it might be one of the loudest and clearest speakers on any mobile device, it is that good! Another welcome addition is built-in GPS. Something that wasn’t even on our earlier at all, and it works very well. From the Pantech Duo, to the AT&T Tilt, to the Motorola Q9h, and the upcoming Blackjack II, you shouldn’t have any problem finding a Windows Mobile device on AT&T. Pricing wasn’t revealed to us just yet by our source, but we’ll update you as soon we know! Want to check out the pictures? Sure you do!

UPDATE: The Motorola Q9h does indeed come with an extended battery, and extended battery cover! From our not-so-scientific tests though, the standard battery is impressive all by itself!

UPDATE 2: Pricing should be $299.99 with a 2-year agreement, and $549.99 for full retail pricing.
