The Nokia N78, huh? It’s the replacement for the ever-popular Nokia N73, but in a non-typical Nokia move, it’s actually available in a US 3G NAM flavor. Currently on the shelves at your local Nokia USA store, the N78 is the first handset from Espoo to ship with FP2. There’s a bunch of software improvement which we’ll get into another time, but our favorite one so far? The Destinations for Internet/WAP/MMS, etc. What this does is let you combine a bunch of your access points into one destination. No more of those annoying popup messages asking you how you want to connect even though you’re already connected to Wi-Fi and 3G. In terms of the handsets physical attributes… it’s nice. It’s a little long, but you can’t say it’s not sleek. A huge issue for us is the button placement. Granted it will take a little bit to get used to everything, but we can’t understand how in the heck that end key got placed on the left side like that. It is the most awkward thing to use if you’re holding the phone with one hand. Style over function, friends. Eh, there’s still a whole heep of function in there though. If you’re still in love, we encourage you to check out our hands-on gallery. You’ll like it. Anyone up for a giveaway?

You know we had to go and do it! In all honestly though, not that much is of interest with the new BlackBerry 8110. If you’ve been a die-hard Pearl user since the beginning and are in love with that SureType thing, you’ll most likely want to refresh your pocket with the 8110, but for newcomers in this area, it might not be what you’re looking for. For anyone that’s been following, the updated Pearl lineup includes a refined keyboard, external MicroSD slot, video camera, and a couple other features. Our recommendation is to stick to a Curve and hope RIM releases that 4.5 OS soon. That way you can make fun of all the Pearl people that bought it just so they could record video on their BlackBerry. We got a titanium version in hand, but it does come in a crimson red color as well. You know, in case you’re into that sort of thing. Hit the gallery for the unboxing pics!

So, yeah…we totally raided the Nokia Store last night in New York! We snatched up a brand new Nokia N95 8GB NAM model, or N95-4 for you hardcore Noke fans, and we gotta’ say it is awesome! Mind you this is our first encounter with the N95 8GB so those of you who have had the European model have experienced this, but combine that bigger screen, redesigned navigation keys, the awesome OS update (which is supposedly coming for the N95-3 soon), US 3G, and you’ve got a real winner! FlashLite 3 is the truth, friends. Only one problem we noticed, and that’s because of the small redesign of the slider and larger screen. It might be hard to explain, but when you slide the screen up, the slider rails are not rounded anymore since they have to make it flush with the larger screen, so the rails are a little sharp and uncomfortable when holding it. Small price to pay for one of the sickest phones this side of the Mississippi, right? Scratch that; $799 + tax is quite a lot to pay. Hit up our gallery for all the goods!

The Shift isn’t as big as you’d think even though it has a 7" screen, and the while the slide mechanism is not spring-assisted like the AT&T Tilt, it’s pretty smooth and solid. The low processor freaks us out a little bit, but again, we haven’t really used it yet. Hit the jump for the full unboxing gallery, and we’ll have our full review up soon! Oh yeah…we’re in the "giving" mood. You know what that means!

We’ve professed our love for the Motorola RAZR 2 way back when we scored one, but this is a whole ‘nother story. We still have bad feelings towards Moto for the Dolce & Gabbana debacle they pulled before. If you don’t know, they had a super limited Motorola V3i only sold at Dolce & Gabbana shops, and they were limited to 2,000 pieces. A short time after they sold out, Motorola released a "different" Dolce & Gabanna V3i, with it ending up on T-Mobile USA nonetheless! Do we think that will happen this time around? Most definitely! Back to the phone…it really is a sharp device! The Motorola RAZR 2 Luxury Edition has 18kt and 24kt gold accents around it, a "snakeskin" back (which we thought we hated, but then secretly loved), and probably the most accessories we’ve ever seen come in a Moto box! They included the phone, battery, battery cover, snakeskin and gold carrying strap, snakeskin and gold carrying pouch, phone / screen cleaning cloth, charger, miniUSB to microUSB adapter, Motorola H680 limited edition gold and black Bluetooth headset, desktop charger for headset (with gold trim around charging base), USB headphones, microUSB cable, and a couple other things! If you’re feeling like you are special and deserve a special handset, we’d say you can’t go wrong with the RAZR 2 Luxury Edition. But, know that you might see it in peasants’ hands everywhere beginning whenever Moto deems it "reasonable". And of course hit the link below for the gold treats!

Here we have the WiBrain B1. It’s a new UMPC that features a 1.2GHz intel processor, 1GB of RAM, a 60GB HD, and Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Why does that really matter? Well, remember how UMPCs were supposed to "affordable"? This one is priced at $849, which we can’t argue with! It uses the split QWERTY thumb pad arrangement that the Samsung Q1 Ultra uses, but in our usage, it worked pretty well. Let’s not fool ourselves, it took some getting used to, but the buttons were placed and sized nicely, with awesome tactile feedback. See that word, UMPC / mini-Computer makers? Tactile. This has it, and even has a pop-up webcam with built-in mic which was pretty cool. The screen looked gorgeous with a 4.8" 1024×600 resolution, so the unit is definitely wide. It’s a real UMPC, so that’s to be expected. We were completely pleased with the unit, found it to be light and easy to use and navigate (especially since it uses a touch-pad for the mouse), and the price makes it all the more appealing!

UPDATE: It uses a VIA processor, not Intel!

We got a chance to play around with the new BlackJack II for the better part of a day, and have mixed feelings about the device. On the spec side, it has a quad-band GSM/EDGE radio and a tri-band UMTS radio for world-roaming, 2 megapixel camera, integrated GPS, full QWERTY keyboard, and runs Windows Mobile 6 Standard. We’re going to save our thoughts on the handset for our head-to-head feature story coming up a little later on, but if you’re feeling the need for some Korean love, the BlackJack II launches Friday for $149.99 with a 2-year agreement. Double check with your local AT&T store though, because they might have already received shipments and they’re allowed to start selling the phone. Make sure to check out the photo snaps!

We just got one of these in here at BGR world headquarters, and had a chance to play around with it. From early findings, we’re actually quite disappointed at the "noise cancellation" that the headset supposedly offers. Well, that’s CrystalTalk for you, right? The great part about the headset, is that it is actually one of the most comfortable headsets we’ve ever tried out. We heard test subjects loud and clear on our end, but they could point out every time that we were on a headset. The verdict? If you’re looking for real noise-cancellation, the Aliph Jawbone is the only way to go. If you’re looking for something smaller, little better looking, and extremely comfortable (let’s not forget the two included stylish desktop chargers) the Motorola MOTOPURE H12 is a sure shot win.

What do we have here, guys? You all waited for it, you might even have shed blood for it, but it’s finally here in the flesh, and we’re super impressed! For starters, the early unit we had way back is a little different, and the changes on the new production unit are for the better. Let’s take the keyboard, for instance…before it was a rubberized texture, and while it was cool, it actually got in the way of speed-typing. The AT&T version has switched to completely plastic keys and we can bang out emails faster that you can say, "when can I get one." To answer that, we’re hearing the 1st of November will be the official launch date. We were a little disappointed that BlackBerry Connect wasn’t made available on the device like it was with the AT&T Tilt, but we guess it will come sooner or later. How about the speakers? I think it might be one of the loudest and clearest speakers on any mobile device, it is that good! Another welcome addition is built-in GPS. Something that wasn’t even on our earlier at all, and it works very well. From the Pantech Duo, to the AT&T Tilt, to the Motorola Q9h, and the upcoming Blackjack II, you shouldn’t have any problem finding a Windows Mobile device on AT&T. Pricing wasn’t revealed to us just yet by our source, but we’ll update you as soon we know! Want to check out the pictures? Sure you do!

UPDATE: The Motorola Q9h does indeed come with an extended battery, and extended battery cover! From our not-so-scientific tests though, the standard battery is impressive all by itself!

UPDATE 2: Pricing should be $299.99 with a 2-year agreement, and $549.99 for full retail pricing.

We’ll save you the gloating about how we did this first, and leaked this, and reported that before anyone, let’s just get to the damn device already! The T-Mobile Shadow is officially available today, and here are a couple of our first immediate impressions from the unit…It’s extremely small, and dare we say, fun to use? The scroll wheel takes a little getting used to and it doesn’t behave how you’d think. Each click on the scroll wheel isn’t a "click", you have to scroll the wheel almost 1/4 of the way to register a response. In addition to being the scroll wheel it is also a four-way navigational pad that helps when you want to zip through things instead of messing around pulling "wheelies." The T-Mobile Shadow features one of the best displays we’ve seen on a Windows Mobile device — so crisp and bright — totally hot! There’s a new homescreen UI on here, and basically what it does is simplify the most commonly used applications and functions to the main page of the phone. You can shoot off a text message, browse the web, connect to Wi-Fi, and more all with a few "scrolls" or clicks. The only major drawback to this device is that once you’re used to 3G, it is pretty hard to go back. But, if you’re riding it out on T-Mobile and want something a little more fun, you can’t beat the Shadow for only $149. Check out some snaps in our gallery!

Got a little bit of competition there, Nokia? We’d say so! Sony Ericsson, long know for pooping on us America consumers with non-850MHz phones has finally turned a corner. The Sony Ericsson K850i doesn’t just come quad-band — we’re talking tri-band UMTS/HSDPA action also! Such a glorious day. A 5 megapixel CyberShot camera graces the handset, as do countless other features and upgrades over previous S.E. products. We’re loving this device, too. The camera lens opens automatically like a real camera on the back, the keypad is a pleasure to use and is highly responsive. We’re zipping away at HSDPA speeds right now, so we’d say all systems are a "go!" If there was ever a time to do a battle, it would be between the Nokia N95, and the Sony Ericsson K850i. Right, Chris? Check out our shots below!

The recently announced HTC S730 was a much needed upgrade to HTC’s Vox. Some quick updates to the device include UMTS/HSDPA, a 400MHz processor, refined QWERTY keyboard, front-facing camera, and a couple other tweaks here and there. We liked the HTC Vox at first, but we soon found out the QWERTY keyboard was nearly unusable and the handset was a little but underpowered. How did the HTC S730 do? We would have liked it to shine, but for us, the keyboard was extremely difficult to type on, better, but not quite there yet. Device speed though was fine. Nothing really got slow of lagged down, even with a multitude of applications running concurrently. While we’re on that subject, we’ll let you know the S730 has 64MB of ROM, and 128MB of RAM, so you shouldn’t feel at all slowed down. Think of it as the baby brother to the HTC TyTN II — smaller, sort of similar specs, etc. We’re going to leave the decision making up to you, though. If you think you’re interested in the HTC S730, be all means hit our gallery below!

You should be able to pick these up by ordering direct from T-Mobile, or from a store, though we’re not sure if this is a case of some stores just selling early, or an official notice from corporate giving the "OK". One BGR reader sent us a plethora of pictures of his brand new device, and we’ve added them in our gallery. So, the question is, did you get a T-Mobile BlackBerry 8320 today?
Just a couple days after we unboxed the Apple iPod Classic and had mixed feelings towards it. The click-wheel wasn’t as responsive as we’d hoped and the OS was a little sluggish actually…How did the iPod Nano compare? Amazingly well! We love this little guy. First of all, the size — yes it is a "fatty" but we love it anyway — also the OS seems snappy, and click-wheel is a-clickin’! You really just have to hold one to get a feel for the dimensions. What’s impressive, is that while the proportions might look off, it is perfectly comfortable to hold and use. The screen looks extra great, but who are we kidding, we’re not going to watch movies on this thing! If you don’t need the huge capacity of 160GB, or even 80GB, we’d recommend this all day over the iPod Classic.

The HTC TyTN II is probably one of the most anticipated Windows Mobile devices to ever be released. Does it live up to the hype? In short — yes! Talk about a tech lover’s dream, this thing has everything. From a quad-band EDGE/tri-band UMTS/HSDPA radio, to integrated GPS, 3 megapixel camera with auto-focus, 400MHz processor, full QWERTY keyboard, tilting slide out screen, Bluetooth, WiFi; the list goes on and on. In our opinion, this Windows Mobile device is a masterpiece. It’s comfortable to use and hold, extremely fast, and offers as much as we could want and have come to expect in a WinMo device at this time. With AT&T rumored to be getting it soon, the TyTN II should be very well received by customers in the USA, and around the world.

Thanks for the hookup E-Gadget Depot!

Pictures are after the jump while we’re in the process of upgrading our gallery!

UPDATE: Just a few more general impressions from the device…When I reviewed the pre-production model I found that the connection would completely drop and would cause the device to start searching for a network from scratch. I didn’t think anything of this and thought it was due to the not final ROM. It appears the same thing is happening and after some tests I think I know why. The device does switch from EDGE to 3G pretty well sometimes, but it looks like that’s the issue. If I manually set the bands only to WCDMA, or only GSM, it will never drop a connection and lose signal. I’d expect a ROM update to resolve this soon. Also…BlackBerry Connect is awesome on here! It completely syncs OTA to your BES server and works flawlessly. Absolutely poops on Activesync in my opinion. I did notice that it slows the device down a bit which is unfortunate. Anyone got a TyTN II out there and experiencing the same things?

We’ve been following the Motorola Z8 for a while now, and quite frankly it’s an object of lust for us. It features a "kick-flip" slider function that lets the phone curve to your face instead of awkwardly holding up a regular slider. It actually runs Symbian OS 9.2 UIQ 3.2 which we believe is a first from any handset manufacturer, not just Moto. How does it fare? Pretty good. The phone itself, looks amazing. It’s very well thought out and constructed. The only physical problem we had with the phone, was that the charging ports are at the bottom of the device, and they are in a box that kind of sticks out. So holding with one hand was a little uncomfortable sometimes. We really can’t figure out the OS for the life of us…It tries to be Creme Brule when it should try to be Jello. The keypad is very small and a little cramped, but what really got us is that keys have to be pushed very hard to register a response, and have almost no tactile feedback. It’s a quad-band GSM/EDGE/UMTS/HSDPA phone (3G on 2100MHz band only) with a 2 megapixel camera, unique sliding form-factor, a new OS, and a great design. This particle package comes with the great Motorola S9 A2DP headsets, and The Bourne Identity movie pre-loaded onto a microSD card. I think the general impression around here is that we just have to get used the device to make a firm conclusion. So far, we do like it though.

Thanks to CTI Miami for the hookup!

We’re not sure where to start on this one…The new iPod Classic features an all metal body, looks very sharp, and feels pretty good in the hand when you’re using it. The problem for us, is actually using it. It could be just this unit so don’t go and dismiss it right away, but we found unlike previous iPods, we have to press really hard on the click-wheel to register "clicks". Not the physical buttons, but the actual scrolling motion. The UI looks pretty nice and is visually polished, but we found it pretty slow — definitely slower than the 5G iPod! Sound quality as always was very good, but we felt like it would "WOW" us a little more than this…

Thanks to the 5th Ave Apple Store for being open 24/7 to aid in our late night Apple fiends! We just wish they had the 160GB version in stock.

AT&T, where’s the announcement? Oh well, we’ll rock with it anyway. Now that Sprint, and Verizon have both launched their versions of the phone, it only seems fit that AT&T has came into game. The major difference here is the OS that runs on the RAZR 2 V9 version. It’s the Motorola Synergy OS which is actually pretty old, except for a few minor refinements. The phone does have a 3G radio built right in and performs wonderfully. We also found the voice quality to be better than a RAZR 2 V8. that we also tested on AT&T’s network. We’re having a little issue with the color of AT&T’s version though, and our dream was crushed when we found out the the V9 would not be using the <strike>JUIX </strike>MOTOMAXG OS. After all, at this time, MOTOMAXG can’t support 3G, so it does make sense. It’s thin, sleek, eye-catching, and extremely solidly built. What can we say…Welcome back Moto!

While not the biggest fans of Samsung around here, the Helio UI is where the device really delivers! You can see Samsung hints here and there, but for the most part it is all Helio. The hardware itself is actually impressive — very sturdy, great keypad — awesome camera, too! As you saw earlier, the Fin supports most of what the Ocean offers like AIM, Yahoo, Live Messenger, including push email. It’s really small and thin. We just wish there was a real LCD display on the outer flip. Sit back, and check out the pictures in our gallery while put it through the paces and put a formal review together!

Yeah, we definitely brought you the Hands On! scoopage before but, it’s always nice to unbox a retail model. Build quality has improved tremendously, and the coloring of the back portion of the phone is a little darker and in our opinion looks a little sharper. The JUIX OS is speedy like always (we love the system sounds and clicks) and EDGE browsing full HTML sites provides just enough satisfaction. Well, at least compared to other Motos. We wouldn’t dare compare it to the you-know-what, though. Finally, the packaging — it is so over the top that we couldn’t not comment on it. Remember the Motorola V3i boxes where you slide out one side and the other side slides out too? This has sort of the same effect once you open the main box you’ll find a smaller box inside. That smaller box slides open and "flips up" so to speak, the Motorola RAZR 2 phone. Kinda’ nifty. Check out the pics in our gallery!

There is not a tremendous amount to say regarding the Sony Ericsson P1. You’ll either love, or hate, though we think you’ll hate it. Having never used this style of QWERTY keyboard (M600i, etc) , it could well have been the worst experience with a keyboard — ever! Its not even the design so much which in theory might prove to be functional, it’s just these keys! They are extremely small, so forget about accurate typing when you have to hit the right or left side of a tiny key. Really poor implementation. The phone itself to me seems like an average phone, I wouldn’t consider it a smartphone even though it runs UIQ. Usual specs include a GSM/EDGE/UMTS tri-band + 2100MHz radio , 3.2 megapixel camera with autofocus, and the standard Sony Ericsson afair like an RSS reader, 3D games, email, etc. I’d stay away from this now unless you can really master the WIZARDRY keyboard. We’re givin’ the Sony P1 one of five BGs, sorry. Gallery link below!

They even included the 850MHz band (we love ya’ AT&T!) and other features like a 2 megapixel camera, fun fashion lights, integrated Blogger tools, A2DP Stereo Bluetooth support, and the standard Sony Ericsson OS that we all love. Did we mention it’s tiny? Oh, ok. The specific unit we unboxed is called "Mysterious Green" but you can also grab it in "Spring Yellow". Want a closer look?
As much of a love/hate relationship we have with Motorola, Nokia continues to constantly impress us. They know how to make phones, damn it! The Nokia 8600 Luna could be considered the baby brother of the Nokia 8800 series, but really shines by itself. It features a smoked glass element with an all metal body and doesn’t fail in the looks department. Specs wise it’s an average device nowadays with quad-band GSM/EDGE connectivity (thankfully!), a 2 megapixel camera which is revealed when the slider is up, and Series 40 OS. Definitely one of the more stylish phones we’ve come across…Plus the keypad slowly glows through the case when in standby mode. Woweee! Take a look at it up close in our gallery!

I hope everyone out there who wants one of these bad boys either got one, or is in line, because it is sheer beauty. From our first impressions, the Apple iPhone definitely lives up to its "shock and awe" factor. Give us a little bit to put it though the paces and really test it out! But for now, we can tell you this. The iTunes activation was a breeze — no hiccups whatsoever. Coverflow scrolls like butta’, Safari shines on WiFi, but is a little slow on EDGE, and Google Maps is pretty bad ass! Who managed to get one?? Hit us up people.

UPDATE: Guys, not lookin’ good! One phone activated fine, the second one, when turned on and connected to iTunes, just opened iTunes, and let you copy music, videos, sync everything, etc. It never came to an activation screen! This is not good. Not that I care, I’ll figure it out, but what about that whole thing about buying it and not being able to use anything??

I’m not sure if the RAZR 2 still has a spell on me or not, but I couldn’t help but think, "too little, too late" when I started unboxing the Motorola maxx K3. It’s a nice phone, it really is. Yet, I don’t see the mass appeal. Keeping in mind it is a phone not meant for the US, I still just don’t have many good things to say. The fact companies still make tri-band handsets puzzles me, and Motorola has not made many improvements over the original KRZR here. 3G aside, it’s thicker, has a worse keypad, calls don’t sound as good compared to the original, and it has a weird feeling matte finish to it. I won’t keep beating on it forever, though. A couple improvements seen on the K3, were the speaker clarity and volume, a slightly larger external screen, and <strike>the hope that this will never come to America</strike> it’s build quality. Motorola ships when they announce now, right? I give the Motorola maxx K3, 2 out of 5 BGs.

The HTC Touch is quite a sneaky one. It first showed up on our radar as the HTC Elf. Then it got a major announcement that it would be launched as the HTC Touch with a special TouchFLO interface. While the actual device is impressively small, the real question is, does the TouchFLO feature make the handset that much more usable? From our encounter with it, it does. While it might not be a phone we would choose to use everyday, due to lack of a physical number pad or keyboard, it’s definitely fresh! The intuitive TouchFLO menu is called up on the phone when you slide your finger from the bottom towards to top, and I believe this can be done from almost anywhere. In doing so, you get three different 3D screens. One of them is a multimedia screen, one is a productivity screen, and one a call screen. All in all it works pretty well, and performed well as a phone. The only drawback we can see is the lack of 850 MHz support. We’re giving the HTC Touch, 3.5 BGs. Check out the full gallery after the jump!

Yes, we all knew this day would come sooner or later. For everyone out there that has not been able to locate one, keep trying! There is no reason to believe there will be a short supply of the Curve, as AT&T has ordered a ton of these. From everything I’ve been told, stores should be receiving double shipments in the coming days which should help calm some of the frenzy. Someone better help us when the Apple iPhone is released though. Any volunteer medics out there that want to standby outside AT&T and Apple stores on launch day for us? Mmm hmm. We give the BlackBerry Curve, 4.5 BGs. Click over for the full unboxing effect!

This has been quite a week, huh? You all know the specs — quadband GSM/EDGE, HSDPA, 3.2 megapixel autofocus camera, and some other nice touches like a dual-hinge mechanism. The whole phone is operable for the most part from the outside screen with the device closed, which makes life a lot easier. The E90 is a little hefty, yet I don’t think the average buyer would really care because they know what they want and what to expect. Notably absent like previously before is the USA 850/1900MHz UMTS bands. The actual OS is very snappy and the internet browser makes no compromises. We give the Nokia E90, 3.5 BGs.
