Looks like Palm’s regular manufacturer, Inventec, is taking a backseat to HTC for the upcoming Treo Pro. Looking at the new images of the Treo Pro, there are now touch surfaces where the soft-keys used to be for the home, calendar, messaging, etc. How appropriate since HTC is so “pro” when it comes to making touch screen devices. We’re pretty big fans of HTC, so this is a great route for Palm to take - especially since the Treo Pro looks like the beginning of a new style and series of devices for the company. Palm’s new device already looked ok, but it’s reassuring knowing that a solid manufacturer with experience in touch screens and beautiful devices is going to be putting this one out. It sheds some new light on our question about this new phone’s build quality. Also, the Palm Treo Pro offers up HTC’s task manager program, so that should have been a dead giveaway concerning the manufacturer.

After Palm’s mishap last week, it apparently decided to take the quiet route in announcing its upcoming Treo Pro handset. Very odd - it’s not even up on Palm’s site yet. Hopefully Palm won’t pull a Nokia and the actual launch will come with a bit more bells and whistles. You know, so that general consumers might actually be alerted to the existence of what looks like a pretty solid offering. First and foremost, it looks sweet. We obviously can’t speak to the build quality yet but this puppy looks nothing like boring old Treos past. The Treo Pro is sleek and thin with smooth lines and rounded edges. It also sports a 3.5 mm headphone jack and microSDHC support, giving it a good shot at being a usable multimedia phone. The fun doesn’t stop on the outside though; we’re talking tri-band WCDMA that will give users access to 3G (and 3.5G) networks around the world. Sorry T-Mobile US peeps, no 3G love for you from Palm. The rest of the important stuff has pretty much been covered in our specs post a few months ago. Odds are very good that AT&T will be picking it up though there are currently no details in terms of pricing or approximate launch date.

Back in May we showed you the first live images of the upcoming Palm Treo 850 and shortly after that we ran down the spec highlights. It looks like everything we showed you and reported is pretty spot on except for one thing: the name. Palm will apparently be dipping outside of its convention and slapping this sucker with a “Pro” moniker rather than the digit format we’re used to. Fair enough. As good as this handset looks, we’re sure the fellas over at Palm are eager to get it out to market. A bit too eager perhaps? Someone over at Palm jumped the gun yesterday and the Palm Treo Pro made its debut on the Palm website a little ahead of schedule it would seem. The Treo Pro portion of the site was pulled down pretty quickly, but not quickly enough of course. Hit the jump for two full screen captures from Palm’s boo boo along with a little reminder of what this puppy looks like in the wild.

This thing hasn’t been out for more a week, and already Palm and Sprint have issued an update that enables a significant new feature. A new page over at the Palm support site has just gone live, noting the availability of a new patch that brings full voice dialing over Bluetooth support to Palm’s new king of the hill Treo 800w. Oddly absent from the first shipment of handsets, it’s still good to see both Palm and Sprint taking a proactive approach to delivering new features to their customers. Then again, both of these companies need all the help they can get to retain subscribers and users respectively, so any little bit might be too little too late.

For some reason, Palm and AT&T have conspired to lower the price of their Centro handheld by a full $30. The diminutive little bugger is now on sale via all retail channels for the bargain basement price of $69.99. Sure, it will cost you in the form of a 2-year contract, but if the $199 iPhone 3G is a bit too expensive for your taste, the Centro might suffice as a suitable stand-in…that is, of course, if you’re completely blind. Sure, the Centro sports a likeable, if outdated, interface, and a number of useful features, but at the end of the day we think you’d have to be crazy to spend good money on a device that runs off the 2.5G EDGE network, and has a keyboard designed for babies and people with abnormally small fingers. That said, if $69.99 seems like too good of a deal to pass up, head on over to your local AT&T store, bypass the lines of crying iPhone customers, and pick one up for yourself. Just don’t say we didn’t warn you.

The user manual for the upcoming Sprint Treo 800w has been unearthed, providing some much needed oomph for Palm’s upcoming handset. The manual itself is 436 pages, so make sure you’ve got a full pot of coffee, a comfortable chair, and about 6 hours of free time. We have, admittedly, not gone through the entire thing, but a cursory trip though the pages didn’t reveal anything terribly exciting. Then again, we know there are more than a few diehard Treo fans out there that are chomping at the bit for this thing to drop, so let’s all give them a bit of slack, at least until it actually comes out on the 13th, at which point we can return to mocking them for remaining faithful to a product line that should have expired about 2 years ago.

Not terrible at all. But for that price, you do have to put up with an outdated OS, constant crashes, and random resets. You can’t have it all, people! Also, a new Google Maps application will be available for all Palm Centros regardless of carrier starting tomorrow. The new application finally brings Google’s cell phone triangulation to the Palm OS.

This one strikes us as a bit fishy, especially considering the impending arrival of the Palm Treo 800w, but word on the street is that the aging Treo 700wx is set to receive a Windows Mobile 6 upgrade. Great news, but even more suspicious is that the upgrade specifically mentions WM 6.0, leaving out any trace of the current generation WM 6.1 version that is currently making the rounds. The rumor also conspicuously leaves out any mention of an update for Sprint users, referring only to a Verizon rollout. We suppose time will tell all, but until we actually see this thing hit the streets, we’re remaining skeptical. In the meantime, it looks like if you don’t to wait, you can unofficially get Windows Mobile 6.0 running on your Treo 700wx.

Beginning Friday June 13th, the phone will be available through all of Verizon’s retail channels, and should run you $369 outright, $339-$70 MIR with a 1-year contract, and $269-$70 MIR on a 2-year bid. We’re also being told that there will be a $100 discount offered to anyone willing to sign up for a compatible unlimited data plan. The phone has already shown up on Verizon’s Testman site, though the company has yet to upload an actual device image. The Centro has been a major seller on AT&T and Sprint, and we’re guessing it will do similarly impressive numbers on the big V. Anyone biting their nails in anticipation?

Thanks, Omie!

Any Verizon customers out there getting close to an upgrade and curious as to what smartphones might be coming to the carrier this Summer? Look no further as Engadget Mobile has gotten their hands on some internal slides that contain info you may find of interest. Hit the read link and dig through the slides for all the VZW info you can sink your teeth into, some of interest and some not. We took particular note of the following: Q3 will bring with it two new smartphones that some will love and some will hate. Either way, you can only work with what they give you in CDMA land. The appetizer is the Treo 800w, a WiFi-bearing Palm smartphone that should be making its way to Sprint as well. Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP, VZ Navigator and a craptastic 1.3 megapixel camera are among the notable specs. As a main course, the GSM-bearing Samsung i770 qwerty smartphone running Windows Mobile Professional 6.1 is sure to please those who get their declining-dollar on out of the country and hate having to leave their CDMA unit behind. The i770 also packs a less craptastic 2 megapixel camera, WiFi, bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP and some more goodies. Other info that can be had in the slides includes Windows Mobile 6.1 upgrade details for the XV6800 and Samsung i760, PTT details, specs and images of the upcoming Motorola V750 and Casio G’zOne C711 and more.

….albeit a bit late for the many Palm faithful that have jumped ship for more exciting waters. Those that have remained, however, have a little bit to look forward to. The Palm 800w is set to be the first Palm device with Wi-Fi, GPS, and EV-DO Rev. A, all of which should be supported and available out of the box. As far as looks go, the handset appears to be a cross between a Centro and a 750, which is either great or disappointing, depending on your preference. We should see this hit Sprint sometime in the next month or two, hopefully sporting Windows Mobile 6.1. But for reals, though, is anything going to actually run out and get this thing?

The speed test reveals a couple of interesting tidbits about the upcoming handset. The phone will be running Internet Explorer 7.1, a much needed overhaul to the company’s current mobile browser. We’re assuming this also means that the device will be based on Windows Mobile 6.1, though there’s nothing in the info to confirm that suspicion. Screen resolution is 320×320, and internet speeds, at least as reported in this test, are a disappointing 475kbps, which is hardly Ev-DO Rev. A speeds. No word, of course, on price or availability, but we’ll keep you updated.

Remember all of that good news surrounding the success of the Palm Centro? It looks like we may have jumped the gun with the congratulatory statements. Palm has just announced an amendment to their Q3 earnings report for the period ending on February 28th, and things are not looking good for the embattled company. Their initial estimates indicated a $31.5 million loss, which isn’t great. Unfortunately the bad news gets worse, as a newly revised Q3 statement indicates losses totaling roughly $57 million. Oh dear. These sinking numbers should be viewed in contrast with the same period last year, which actually saw a profit of $11.8 million. Palm is attributing much of the loss increase to the falling American securities and credit market. Another casualty of a rapidly sinking economy, and unquestionably bad news for Palm. Then again, perhaps their fortunes could be reversed by releasing a small mobile companion notebook…oh wait.

Citing the accessible $99 price point, the Palm press release goes on to tout the handset’s mass appeal, especially to customers entering the smartphone market for the first time. While it’s certainly not our device of choice around here, we understand the handset’s appeal and think that Palm has pulled off a bit of a miracle here. As availability spreads to more carriers, we wouldn’t be surprised to see sales numbers continue to escalate. Nice job, Palm! In the future, though, let’s just try and make a device that is actually 2008-ready.

So maybe Sprint’s unlimited plans aren’t enough of an incentive to make the leap. Maybe you need that little something extra as a kick in the pants before you sign the next two years of your mobile life away. Well if you’re a fan of Palm smartphones, we may have just the thing for you. Thanks to wirefly.com, new Sprint customers can get their hands on an Onyx Black Palm Centro for free with free shipping. No annoying rebates to deal with, no minimum plan requirements, just free. Normally $99 after a $50 rebate with a 2-year contract on Sprint, the Palm Centro is a nice smartphone option if Palm is your thing. It can handle all the basics and is compatible with all of the Sprint goodies that you might be eying. EVDO, Sprint TV, navigation, etc. The handset itself sports a full qwerty and 65K touchscreen, Palm OS 5.4.9 and a 1.3 megapixel camera. No, the Centro won’t be dropping any jaws but if you need a compact smartphone that can handle the basics in terms of business and pleasure then this little guy might just be your bag.

In light of the recent proposed settlement of a class-action suit, Palm has announced that it will be pulling the plug on 34 retail locations in the US. Eight Palm-branded stores and 26 airport kiosks will be closed down as Palm prepares to begin issuing pay-outs. The class-action suit filed in 2005 was just settled at no small cost the the mobile manufacturer, and the final hearing is scheduled for May 2 of this year. In accordance with the proposed settlement, Palm will be required to issue a $75 reimbursement to Treo 600 owners who purchased a new smartphone between September 30, 2005 and six months after the pending settlement is finalized. In addition, those who purchased a Treo 650 will be eligible for a $50 rebate on any new Palm smartphone purchased within six months of settlement finalization. The class-action suit was filed as a result of defective handsets and any customer who had a US-purchased handset requiring two or more repairs or replacements is eligible for compensation. Note that if you intend to make a claim as a result of the class-action settlement, your submission to Palm must be post marked no later than July 28th, 2008. Also, free out-of-warranty repairs will only be covered up to 120 days from the settlement finalization. Go here for further details on eligibility and instructions on how to file a claim once the settlement goes into effect.

The second exclusive Palm handset we’ve got the info on is codenamed the Palm Wanda. Think of it as a cross between the Palm Centro and the HTC Touch. No, like really, look at the backside on that thing! It looks to be a standard affair, running Windows 6.1, well, Standard. Hit that with a tri-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE radio (boo!) and some UMTS/HSDPA action, and you’ve got a Palm Wanda. A 2 megapixel camera, QWERTY keyboard, and GPS are also not left out of the equation. Vodafone said it themselves, this is the successor to the Treo 500v! You know we roll, after the jumpage!

To start it off, the Palm Drucker is going to rock quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE with a tri-band UMTS/HSDPA radio! It will sport the new Windows Mobile 6.1, but this is going to be a Windows Mobile Professional device! It even finally has a 320×320 screen! There’s a full QWERTY keyboard, 1500mAh battery to handle the power, a 2 megapixel shooter, GPS, Wi-Fi, and the usual Bluetooth 2.0. Look for this to replace the aging Palm Treo 750v, and be released around July of 2008 for ₤270. Full slide after the break!

As if anyone actually cares…Nevertheless, we’re here to bring everything we know to you, and what we do know, is that the Treo 755p will be making the rounds to Verizon Wireless on December, 17th. That’s going to be an online and telesales only affair, with the full release for brick-and-mortar stores happening on January, 7th. Doesn’t it feel like yesterday when we were eagerly awaiting the Treo 700w on Verizon? You ready for the price? I said, are you ready for the price? A whopping $449.99 with a 2-year agreement! Wowbawuah! The 1-year price is $519.99, and retail pricing is $569.99. <strike>For that kind of pricing you’re better off buying some plane tickets to the VZW headquarters and slapping them upside they heads. At least you’ll actually be satisfied.</strike> Click on for the SKUs and pricing for all the accessories, if you dare!

Thanks, Omie!

Anyone still rocking an AT&T-branded Treo 680? Oh, hi. You’re going to be quite thankful today, as AT&T and Palm have just dropped a rather sizeable update to the aging handset. There’s quite a collection of changes and enhancements here, so if you do own a Treo 680, you’ll probably want to hook this up with the quickness. Among the most significant changes include Push-To-Talk support, Microsoft Direct Push, native IM client, support for SD cards up to 4GB, and much more. Oh, and every Cingular badge will finally be replaced with the new AT&T branding. It’s about damn time! The bad news, however, is that this update appears to disable support for BlackBerry Connect, so if you’re dependent on that feature, this is probably not the right move at this time. The update is available right now from Palm’s site. It’s currently only offered for AT&T-branded devices, but expect a version for unlocked / unbranded handsets in the near future.

Google’s recent introduction of its "My Location" non-GPS geo-locater system was a fantastic development for anyone sporting a handset not equipped with a GPS chip. One glaring omission from the announcement, however, was the lack of support for Palm OS-based devices. While this could have stood a yet another reason not to purchase a Garnet-based device, it seems that there may be some relief in sight for the Palm faithful. Apparently, the API needed to identify cell towers (a necessary component of the My Location service) does exist, it just simply hasn’t been made public. Realizing the error of their ways, Palm is planning on releasing that API to developers sometime next month, which should clear the way for My Location support in future revisions of Google Maps for Palm. Phew.

We just got a tip that certification for the Windows Mobile 6 upgrade for Palm’s Treo 750 will finally be going live tomorrow AM on AT&T’s site. Could this be true? Probably, but we wouldn’t bet our Motorola Q9 with Wi-Fi and Windows Mobile 6.1 on it.

Yeah, you read that correctly. It is now possible to run a version of Palm’s Garnet operating system on your favorite N-Series internet tablet device. We have no idea why anyone would want to go and ruin a perfectly good OS by slapping the Palm software on top of it, but hey, different strokes, right? To be fair, this is only possible by way of a clever bit of coding that allows for a virtual system to be installed on top of your N770, N800, or N810. This is an offical Access release, though. Making it even more appealing is the fact that it is completely free. Currently available as a beta product, the software should hit a full-scale release by the end of the year. With the impending release of the oh-so-nice N810, we could really see this this turning into a viable alternative to anyone that relies on the Palm OS but can’t take another Treo. Enjoy!
