Its been a while since Apple updated their consumer line of Macbooks and iMacs — don’t even get us started on the Mac Mini — so it comes as no surprise that when the store when down this morning there…

Its been a while since Apple updated their consumer line of Macbooks and iMacs — don’t even get us started on the Mac Mini — so it comes as no surprise that when the store when down this morning there was some new hardware hiding behind the curtain. The updated Macbook now has a thinner form factor, familiar plastic body construction with cleaner beveled edges, multitouch trackpad, and will feature a 2.26 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor. The biggest performance increase would have to be in the graphics department, a NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics processor with 256MB of DDR2 SDRAM (shared) is now powering the 13.3″ screen. The revamped iMac will still have its svelte, familiar form but will now pack a 21.5-inch LED back lit display and sport a 3.01 or 3.33 GHz Intel C2D processor. Not fast enough for you? Upgrade to the 27-inch LED display and you can rock out with the quad-core Intel i5 running at 2.66 GHz or the i7 running at 2.8 GHz. The iMac will have 4 DIMM slots and support up to 16GB of memory. The Mini got a pathetic quick refresh in March but hasn’t seen any major form-factor or feature upgrades in recent year (yes, years). The new Mac Mini, gets the same neglect. Although it does get the same 256MB 9400M NVIDIA chip as the new Macbook the thrills pretty much end there. Upgraded hard drive storage and L2 cache just aren’t that exciting. Last, the best always comes last, the Mighty Magic Mouse. How about some gesture-based GUI navigation for your carpal tunnel? The Magic Mouse supports two fingered scrolling, swiping, and other advanced gestures all without the use of buttons. Check out the hotness!

Aww, crap. Just when we thought we were finally going to be able to get our hands on the ASUS Eee Keyboard, an ASUS marketing executive had to go and ruin the fun. Apparently the Eee Keyboard will not be launching by the end of this month as expected, but sometime in August instead. The reason for the delay? ASUS has yet to fully work out how it is going to market the mind-numbingly cool computer, which is more or less a positive way to say that its scared that one wrong decision will jeopardize its potential for success. Regardless, we want 10 and we want them now.

In the age of job losses, slowed progress and a floundering economy, tech is getting hit as hard as any industry. As stands to reason, we’ve seen slowed progress of late in terms of new technology coming to market. Sure there’s a nice looking piece of kit that surfaces every now and again but overall, the market lacks excitement. While ASUS’s upcoming Eee Keyboard might not be revolutionary per se, it is most definitely a breath of fresh air in what is otherwise a fairly stagnant market. We gave you the specs on this PC-in-a-keyboard back in January and for the most part, readers agreed: the Eee Keyboard is @&#%$!& cool. Now, according to Engadget’s Chinese counterpart, the sexy little PC will finally reach market by the end of June. We presume, unfortunately, that we’re looking at an initial launch confined to the Asian market but we really hope ASUS spreads this puppy out fast because we can’t get our grubby mitts on it soon enough. Look for official launch details to emerge from Computex during the first week of June.

Currently, iMacs are only available in 20 inch and 24 inch sizes and the re-introduction of a 17″ model leaves us scratching our heads. Once upon a time, there was a 17″ white iMac, available to educational institutions for $899, that was phased out when Apple overhauled its iMac line in 2007. Is this a new aluminum 17″ iMac that hits the low price point that educational institutions can afford or is it just a three year old advertisement that was inadvertently recycled with new pics?

UPDATE: Couple commenters and other people wrote in… this seems to simply be the older 17″ aluminum iMacs that are discounted for educational institutions.

Just in case the current economic climate didn’t tip you off, Gartner has issued new predictions for PC sales in 2009 and things don’t look good. You don’t say? According to the firm, the PC market is in for its sharpest decline ever in 2009 with sales expected to drop a massive 11.9 percent. Should Gartner’s prediction be accurate, the PC business is in for a decline nearly three times its current record slide of 3.2 percent in 2001. Insights from George Shiffler, research director at Gartner:

The PC industry is facing extraordinary conditions as the global economy continues to weaken, users stretch PC lifetimes and PC suppliers grow increasingly cautious.

The firm sees laptop sales rising around 9 percent year-over-year in 2009 while progress in the portable department is offset, and then some, by a steep 32 percent drop off in desktop sales. Gartner also predicts a 10.4 percent sales decline in emerging markets which saw an 11.1 percent growth in its prior worst year, 2002. Long story short, 2008 was bleak and 2009 is shaping up to be even worse.

There you have it folks — done and done. The Apple Store is back up, new gear is live and credit card portals are wide open. Keeping things nice and simple, Apple has taken one of its two standard routes and simply tossed out a bunch of refreshes sans-hullabaloo. Here it is, now buy it. So what have we got?

iMac:

$1199 (only 20″ model) – 2.66 GHz, 2GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce 9400M, 320GB HD

$1499 (24″) – 2.66 GHz, 4GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce 9400M, 640GB HD

$1799 (24″) – 2.93 GHz, 4GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce GT 120, 640GB HD

$2199 (24″) – 3.06 GHz, 4GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce GT 130, 1TB HD

Mac Mini:

$599 – 2.0GHz, 1GB 1066 MHz DDRS SDRAM, GeForce 9400M, 120GB HD, 8x SuperDrive, Mini DisplayPort, mini-DVI, 5 USB Ports, FireWire 800 Port

$799 – 2.0GHz, 2GB 1066 MHz DDRS SDRAM, GeForce 9400M, 320GB HD, 8x SuperDrive, Mini DisplayPort, mini-DVI, 5 USB Ports, FireWire 800 Port

Mac Pro:

$2499 – 2.66GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon 3500 processor, 3GB of RAM, NVIDIA GeForce GT 120, 640GB HD

$3299 – Dual 2.26GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon 5500 processors, 6GB of RAM, NVIDIA GeForce GT 120, 640GB HD

Apple definitely gave its desktop lineup a bit of an adrenaline shot, though it really didn’t come through with anything too Earth-shattering. What do you guys think? On a completely overshadowed note, Apple is now offering a 1TB Time Capsule for $500 (500GB for $299) and the AirPort Extreme Base Station, now capable of running two networks simultaneously, will run you $179 (old model is going for $159).

There’s nothing an Apple fan loves more than a yellow sticky note that reads “We’ll be back sson” and following a massive flurry of rumors, Apple has closed its online store this morning in the US and a variety of other countries. Countless fingers are crossed as several new part numbers had been discovered last night, allegedly covering refreshed iMac and Mac Mini models. What’s more, a new Time Capsule and AirPort Extreme were recently seen passing through the FCC which of course leads us to believe we’re in for more than just new computers this morning. So much for that March 24th event — it looks like Apple is as anxious to push out its refreshed gear as Mac users are to shell out cash for it. What are we most excited about? A potential end to the seemingly infinite speculation and rehashing surrounding the iMac and Mac Mini refreshes. Please Apple, get it over with already.

Sources for this are unconfirmed, but word seems to be coming from more than just one place which is never a bad thing. If things pan out we can only hope Apple has something big in store for that date, especially since many of us have been left longing after being bombarded with so many iMac and Mac Mini rumors. We’ll be sure to keep you updated as news comes our way.

This morning we showed you an image of what might just be the Mac mini refresh after it was leaked around the interwebs last night. Skeptics across the web immediately dismissed it as a laughable Photoshop job and went to great lengths to prove their point. We were skeptical as well of course, but we still couldn’t dismiss it entirely. Sure it was a little blurry and the Firewire port and five USB ports might have been hard to swallow, but it’s now looking like the image could indeed be authentic. A new video originating on 9 to 5 Mac shows the unit in all of its glory and well… It looks very real. This is not to say it isn’t simply a hell of a home job, but if it is it could be one of the best we’ve ever seen. So hit the jump, feast your eyes and let us know if you think this is the real McCoy.

Fanboys (and girls) were disappointed this year when Macworld ended without a bang, and more importantly, without an updated version of the Mac Mini. Just because the shindig is over doesn’t mean rumors are going to be squashed of course. A partner to NVIDIA, the company currently providing GPUs for MacBooks and MacBook Pros, said that there is a new unit the company is developing for the Mac Mini. Unfortunately, the news was almost solid until there was more speculation the GPU would be used for the Apple TV, but that unnamed NVIDIA partner stands by his or her claim that it’s coming to a refreshed version of the Mac Mini. All you Mac Mini fans out there waiting for a refreshed Mini to use as a media center, we’ll be sure to keep you informed as the news develops.

Asus most definitely came to CES today packing heat and without a doubt, one of its most impressive announcements was the Eee Keyboard. We want it and we want it now. The Eee Keyboard stuffs a PC with respectable netbook-like specs into, you guessed it, a keyboard. Flat Mac-like keys and a 5-inch touchscreen display sit atop a very thin keyboard frame with a host of connections on the back – connections you potentially don’t even need, we might add. Asus’ new take on the all-in-one features Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n along with wireless HDMI and Bluetooth 2.0 meaning that short of a power cord, users can connect wirelessly to any and all required peripherals including a high definition display or HDTV. We’ll take things in a different direction – imagine carrying this puppy around with a pocket projector and having access to a full PC with a sizable projected display anywhere and everywhere you go. Specs on this innovative little piece of kit are as follows:

Self-contained PC / keyboard combo with integrated 5-inch touchscreen display

OS: Windows XP Home Edition

1.6GHz Intel Atom microprocessor

1GB of DDR2 DRAM

16GB or 32GB SSD

Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n

Bluetooth 2.0

Ultra Wideband HDMI

USB 2.0 x2, VGA, HDMI, headphone and mic ports

Weight: 2 lbs

Pricing and projected availability are still a bit of a mystery, though Asus CEO Johnny Shih claims it will be available in the next three to six months, so we’ll be waiting with bated breath. Hit the jump for two more shots.

As part of the CES onslaught from Lenovo this week, the company took the wraps off of its brand new all-in-one desktop PC dubbed IdeaCentre A600. First, let us state the obvious: gorgeous. As far as the design is concerned, Lenovo did a remarkable job putting this all-in-one together. Lenovo claims that the A600 will be the thinnest all-in-one on the market once it is released and while that may be true it’s of little consequence considering it sits on a desk. The wireless remote is also a huge highlight, boasting functionality such as an air mouse, VoIP handset capabilities and accelerometer-driven gaming control a la Wiimote. The A600’s form and execution are what draw us in and thankfully the guts don’t disappoint, provided you’re willing to shell out some cash however. The base price of $999 is more than attractive but if you’re looking to get all you can out of this sexy box, additions like 4GB of RAM, 1 TB of storage and a Blu-ray drive are going to push the price point up considerably. Lowlights include a comparably tiny 21.5-inch display, lack of an HDMI port and the fact that just about everything is an option. An all-in-one focused on media should at least include a TV tuner in the base price but no such luck here. Regardless, we’ll be looking forward to seeing this puppy on display at CES, and to finding out what a fully loaded box will go for.

So Macenstein received an image from an anonymous tipster that supposedly depicts Apple’s upcoming Mac mini refresh. Presumably, the image is of an on-screen ad or a slide that would, in theory, be displayed during the Mac mini announcement many still expect to come next month. Macenstein posted it with skepticism, the blogosphere immediately dismissed it as fake and it probably is. That being said however, the reasoning most blogs are using to dismiss it isn’t exactly firm – at all. Firstly, the marketing blurb, “The world’s smallest desktop computer.” Many dismissed the phrase as missing Apple’s common word play but in reality, Apple uses simple bold statements quite often in its marcom. In fact, this slide lines up pretty well with early MacBook Air slides. The second item of contention is the groove around the perimeter of the mini, above the CD slot. While many jump to the conclusion that this is a fold up display, that’s not what we’re getting. To us, it looks like a venting system. Anyone who has used a new MacBook or MacBook Pro knows that these things can get hot – fast. As the new Mac mini will be made of aluminum, whether or not the image above is real, it stands to reason that Apple would need to cool a device that stuffs all of its guts into a package so small. Sure the image above could be fake, but if you think it’s because of the blurb or the groove you might want to think again. On the other hand, if you think it’s because some anonymous guy sent it to Macenstein, well, you’re probably right. If it is fake however, don’t expect it to be far off from the real deal.

This time of year there is certainly an abundance for tech and gadget rumors, so we have another for you to lust after: Adamo by Dell. The NY Times dug up some of Dell’s trademarks and they included “Adamo” and…

This time of year there is certainly an abundance for tech and gadget rumors, so we have another for you to lust after: Adamo by Dell. The NY Times dug up some of Dell’s trademarks and they included “Adamo” and “Adamo by Dell.” Sounds pretty posh, doesn’t it? We’re not sure if it is going to be just one computer or a whole line of desktops and notebooks. Rumor has it that one of the upcoming models might be even thinner than the MacBook Air (which could be good or bad depending on your preference), but this is all we have to base it from:

But most telling of all might have been the reaction of Michael Tatelman, Dell’s vice president in charge of consumer sales and marketing, to my question about whether or not Dell had an Air-like product in store. Mr. Tatelman’s mouth gaped open and his eyes darted away from my face.

We’re not going to put too much stock in that, but it’s definitely a possibility and we’re not saying it should be ruled out entirely. Dell is looking to break from its current image and unleash something new to give the brand a little shake-up. Analysts have this to say about a possible MacBook Air competitor from Dell:

“One of the things they could do real differently from Apple would be cheap,” said Roger Kay, president of Endpoint Technologies, an analyst firm. “They could shave $400 off the MacBook Air price pretty easily.”

Analysts – what would the world be without them? Either way, Dell is taking on a pretty momentous task and we’re hoping it brings the goods. Someone needs to step up in the PC world, right? When’s the last time there was so much hype around a Dell, Sony or HP computer? Are you listening, guys?

Toshiba upped the ante in SSD storage capacity by announcing the latest additions to its NAND flash SSD drive portfolio. Coming in at a whopping 512GB, its 2.5″ SSD is the current reigning champion in terms of sheer storage capacity. For those who don’t need or can’t afford such a large-sized and presumably hefty-priced drive, Toshiba is also offering its 2.5″ drives in 64GB, 128GB and 256GB capacities. Notebook and netbook owners have not been left out in the cold as Toshiba is also producing 1.8″ drives and 1.8″ SSD flash modules in capacities of 64GB, 128GB and 256GB. The drives promise to deliver a maximum sequential read speed of 240MBps and a maximum sequential write speed of 200MBps along with AES encryption. The new drives will be on display at CES 2009 with samples available from January to March 2009. Mass production and general consumer availability will not begin until April to June 2009.

Ruh roh, as Scooby would say. Once relatively untouchable, security experts have now found what they claim to be two new pieces of malware specifically targeting OS X. The first, ‘OSX.RSPlug.D’, is a Trojan capable of rerouting internet traffic to a malicious DNS server which will draw users to phishing sites and ads. So far the only reported sources of the Trojan are porn sites where it sits masked as a codec needed to display certain videos. The second piece of malware, ‘OSX.Lamzev.A’, is much less of a threat. While is is surely capable of doing some serious damage by letting hackers install backdoors in an affected user’s system, a hacker would need physical access to the user’s computer in order to place it. This news might not be terribly huge for most users right now, odds are it is indeed a sign of things to come as Apple computers grow more popular thus drawing the attention and resources of malicious hackers. No need to panic for the time being however, just watch where you go for, err, entertainment.

Asus has finally released the first version of its much-awaiting all-in-one offering, the Eee Top. For the time being, one version is available to the public, the ET1602, though a slightly beefier version is expected to become available shortly. Of course it’s only available in Taiwan for the time being but the roll out in other markets shouldn’t take long. As for seeing this puppy here in the US any time soon? That remains to be seen but we’re definitely not holding our breath. A recap of the specs:

Intel Atom processor (1.6GHz/533MHz FSB/512K Cache)

1 GB DDR2 667 RAM

160 GB SATA II 5400rpm hard drive

Graphics Card: Shared Graphics (128MB)

Windows XP Home (SP3)

15.6″ (16:10 Wide Panel) touchscreen

Graphics: Shared Graphics (128MB)

Webcam: 1.3 Megapixel

Mirophone: Digital Array Microphone

Audio Chips: 2 x 4W Hifi Speaker + SRS

Communication: 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet

WLAN: WiFi 802.11b/g/n

IO Side Ports: Memory card slot (SD/SDHC/MS/MS Pro) / USB ports x 2

IO Rear Ports: Audio Ports x 3 (Microphone, Line in & Line Out) / USB ports x 4 / Gigabit LAN port

Ships with: StarOffice, Adobe Reader 8.0, Norton Internet Security (90 day trial version), Express Gate, Skype, Eee Memo, SoftStyles, Eee Cam and Eee Cinema

Asus’s more timid ET1602 will run about $580, not bad at all. Our favortie thing about the Eee Top by the way, is the fact that it runs XP SP3 and yet the product page begins with a huge banner reading, “ASUS recommends Windows Vista Business for Business Computing / ASUS recommends Windows Vista Home Premium for Personal Computing”. Excellent.

So what’s next? It’s clearly time for a fresh crop of rumors to start making their way across the net. AI dug back to its hardware roadmap from a few months ago and decided to revisit the last stop on the tour, a refresh of Apple’s iMac line. Among the speculation is a likely processor upgrade, the addition of a DisplayPort (as El Jobso said, it will be the new Apple standard) and a possible NVIDIA graphics card upgrade. While an iMac refresh is certainly possible if not likely, we doubt Apple will make a terribly big deal out of it. The notebook event covered the new Cinema Display which isn’t due until next month so if the Cupertino crew wanted to make a big deal out of the new iMacs, they likely would have hosted a “computer event” as opposed to a “notebook event”. We shall see…

Ladies and gentlemen, say hello to the Sony VAiMac. Wait no, sorry – the Sony iVAIO? No no, it’s actually called the Sony VAIO JS. All joking aside, Sony has just announced the pricing on its latest creation and its price points are almost directly in line with Apple’s 20″ iMacs, the VAIO JS really is impressive on paper. The VAIO JS PC / display combo box will be available in two models as follows:

VAIO JS190 – $1499.99

Intel Core 2 Duo (3.0GHz, 6MB L2 Cache)

20.1″ XBRITE-HiColor LCD

Windows Vista Home Premium

4GB DDR2 RAM

500GB hard drive

Integrated 1.3 megapixel webcam

Integrated Blu-ray player

Integrated Bluetooth

VAIO JS130 – $1099.99

Intel Core 2 Duo (2.5GHz, 2MB L2 Cache)

20.1″ XBRITE-HiColor LCD

Windows Vista Home Premium

4GB DDR2 RAM

500GB hard drive

Integrated 1.3 megapixel webcam

Available in black, silver and pink

Ok seriously, a 20.1″ all-in-one box with a 3.0 GHz Core 2 Duo, 4GB of RAM, a 500GB hard drive and Blu-ray for $1500? Where do we sign? The VAIO JS is already live on Sony’s site where is states that units will begin shipping in “early October”.

Known for their unique small form factor case designs, Shuttle is launching their Shuttle D10 desktop PC this week. The incorporation of a 7 inch LCD screen with an 800×480 resolution into the case makes it look like it is fresh out of a modder’s basement. Way cool. Not too shabby on specs either, as the D10 will come in a variety of configurations that include either a Core 2 Duo E4000 Series, a Dual Core E2000 Series, or a Celeron 400 Series processor with 2GB of DDR2 (up to 4GB) RAM, RealTek 5.1 Channel Audio Support, and four USB ports. All this for under $500. Sorry guys, not for us this time as it is available only in Japan. Why do they always get the good stuff?

Hoping to stop the downward spiral they’ve been experiencing as of late, AMD has just announced plans for a new line of PCs aimed squarely at business and enterprise clients. The new Business Class line of machines will sport a host of mid-level features, including ATI graphics chips, Phenom and Athlon processors, and more. The components will be rebadged by a number of AMD’s high-level business distributors, including Dell, Acer, Fujitsu, HP, and Lenovo. The systems will come complete with a 2-year warranty, while the processors themselves will be guaranteed for 3 full years. No word on pricing, but we should see the desktop line available in the near future, with a notebook line forthcoming by sometime this Fall. Is it too late, though?

We can’t remember the last time a company had to spend so much time proving that it was real. We recently posted about a telephone interview with Psystar president Rudy Pedraza, a man becoming webfamous for all the wrong reasons.…

We can’t remember the last time a company had to spend so much time proving that it was real. We recently posted about a telephone interview with Psystar president Rudy Pedraza, a man becoming webfamous for all the wrong reasons. In the interview, Pedraza insisted that Psystar was the real McCoy despite a flurry of internet chatter and a host of evidence to the contrary. The Psystar site stated clearly that boxes were shipping as of over a week ago so in theory, people should be coming forward with some support for the witch-hunted open computer manufacturer any day now. At this point however, we’ve yet to come across a single testimonial from any customers. In the meantime, the video above was posted by Psystar this past week and it depicts each of its three Open Computer models. They certainly look real, but we want to see them in the wild.

After the blogosphere did nothing short of tear Psystar apart limb from limb, rottweiler style, Forbes managed to wrangle an interview with the man behind the [alleged] myth. Psystar, for those recovering from a coma, <strike>might be</strike> is a hardware vendor out of Doral Florida. It claims to be offering two models of "Open Computers" – well equipped, cheap and available preloaded with Apple’s Leopard OS. In fact, a well-specced Leopard OS-equipped Open Computer can be had for as little as $555. Thanks to some sketchy details, no Apple consent and an eager army of citizen journalists, Psystar was almost immediately torn apart. Brian Caulfield of Forbes.com managed to to score a short phone interview with Psystar Founder and President Rudy Pedraza and while Caulfield still isn’t entirely convinced, Pedraza insists that his company is the real deal. Pedraza states, "It’s not that we can’t provide the product or [that] Apple can stop us from providing the product. The truth is, we can’t process your credit card." This in response to the fact that Psystar’s payment gateway disappeared late last week as news of fraudulent dealings swarmed around the internet. Still Psystar managed to process a large number of orders before the payment gateway fell off and they supposedly just moved into a new larger facility (the somewhat-sketchy explanation for several address changes on the Psystar website last week). The proof is in the putting. The following blurb is up on the Psystar site, but only if you hit psystar.com and not www.psystar.com:

It is our pleasure to inform you that our store is up and running thanks to our new high volume payment processor. To all, we challenge you, let’s see if we can max this one out. Regarding shipping, orders placed the week of April 7th are currently being shipped. We will be shipping units out of our new facility starting Monday, April 21st, including those orders placed the week of April 14th. Orders are being shipped in the order that they were received, don’t worry, you’ll get yours soon. Upon shipment an email notification including tracking information will be sent to you, no need to ask.

If you’re one of the brave souls willing to fork over some cash to Psystar, definitely hit us up with some details if your box is received.

ShoZu, creator of the extremely popular smartphone application bearing its name, has just announced a public beta of a new desktop application. For those who have not sampled the ShoZu mobile application / service before, it essentially provides users with a single portal through with media can be uploaded to a variety of sharing sites. It also features zero-click sharing whereby media can be captured and automatically uploaded in the background without any user intervention. A few integration issues on various devices have plagued the app in the past, but recent versions reportedly play a bit nicer with handsets in general. ShoZu’s freshman desktop offering is compatible with Windows and Mac computers and is as user-friendly as they come. How user friendly? We’re talking drag and drop here, so simple that your grandmother could probably handle it. ShoZu software makes it simple to name, tag and enter descriptions prior to upload as well. Other nice touches include a CC feature that makes uploading to multiple destinations just as effortless as a single destination. In terms of supported services there are over 30 including Facebook, Flickr, Picasa, YouTube, MySpace, Blogger, TypePad and more. As many content sharing services as people subscribe to these days, apps like ShoZu’s desktop solution are becoming more and more of a necessity.

Ever have the feeling that your current computer system has an inferiority complex? Having seen this new machine, you might be on to something. The Eazo Luxury PC is a high-end personal computer with an incredible amount of attention payed to aesthetic and functional detail. The company has crammed their luxury box full of some pretty impressive equipment, including an Intel liquid-cooled 3GHz Core 2 Quad processor, 2 duplexed 8800 GTX video cards, 4GB of RAM, a 150GB 10,000 RPM drive, and an auxiliary 500GB drive. Whoa. Granted, you could probably put together a machine like this yourself, but you’d be hard pressed to piece together your own machine in such a classy package. Cost? $9,000. The fine things in life ain’t cheap.
