Dell demos Streak running Android 2.1, $299 on contract, $549 off

In a sort of puzzling YouTube post, Dell did a quick demo of the 5-inch Streak running Android 2.1 (Eclair). The handset, according to Dell, is supposed to get Android 2.2 sometime after launch so we are a bit confused as to why 2.1 is even on the table. We suppose it is a good sign that Dell’s Android team has 2.1 running on this beast, but seriously Dell… bring on Froyo! Also, the device will retail for $299 with a 2-year AT&T contract and $549 full retail. We’ve got the tripod-less video ready for you after the break.

There’s certainly promise here, but the pricing may be an issue for many.

Looks like AT&T really is bent on ‘crippling’ any/every Android offering in some way or another.

    Oh Well…

      Yeah says:

how is this crippling? This is priced at a high end point like an iphone.

People who want a sophisticated Android device but on ATT, then they can go for this.

People will pay for it, if it turns out to be good of course.

Personally, I really like this little tablet/phone, but you obviously must have missed the part wherein they’ve already stated that the STREAK lacks HD video capture/playback, and is supplied with a maximum of 16gb for (microSDHC) storage in its retain configuration, all of which are bettered by today’s top-of-the-line handsets… Android and otherwise.

For many Samsung’s Captivate probably represents the better option given that it offers more storage space, the same screen resolution, HD capabilities, and a more ergonomically (for a phone) feasible form-factor, for (as it currently stands) less money.

Bottom Line: Options… They’re Very Nice To Have

You aren’t accounting for the bezel. It probably dwarfs your genitals. If you are hanging around the right ladies though, the streak might get you more attention.

I paid $500 for an ipod touch without 3g, a cell radio, or gps.
The top panel, being more than just drag down notification, is pretty darn sweet. I really like what dell did with that.

Last I checked an iPod Touch goes for $199 — no clue what you paid $500 for — not even the $64GB Touch costs that much, and it dwarves the Streak in storage.

Also, does anyone know if AT&T will hunt you down and make you change your data plan even if you buy one of these unlocked?

Thanks in advance for anyone who answers my question!

Yes, I am 99% sure AT&T will put you on the smartphone data plan ($25 for 2GB) if you aren’t already an AT&T customer with a smartphone data plan. They did it to me last month when I got the Nexus One unlocked. Sold my phone and switched to T-mobile the same month and never looked back.

I have an Experia X10, switched out my sim from Nokia N900 to the X10. At&t did not “come after me” nor anything like that. I talked to an At&t rep a couple weeks ago and he said that as long as I did not change my rate plan my current plan will not be touched. From my understanding you have to pay extra for the new data plans only if your activating a new account or change your current “old” one to a new one.

    Shawn says:

This whole thing reminds me of how nokia screwed up its release of the N900 (meamo) and how Sonyericsson screwed up its release of the X10 running 1.6 and still no new update. You would think someone over at Dell would have learned from the others. Oh and I’m guessing some bs politics involving at&t have something to do with what ultimately plays out?

    Topher86 says:

If Dell can get Froyo on it in a reasonable time frame, I don’t think this slow release will hurt them. Even w/ 1.6, I still think the Streak is a great Android option. The Dell that I’m really fearing will flop big time is the Areo, only because it’s a vanilla device, unless the reason for the delay was Dell trying to optimize their skin for Froyo…hopefully.

This is amazing to know that this marvelous device is available for $299 with a 2-year AT&T contract where as $549 is its full retail price. This join venture between Motorola and AT&T is very beneficial for the consumers. This is very fabulous smartphone is giving very tough time to other brands of the market.
