Carrier billing coming soon to the Android market

Google updated its Android Developers blog with some legal changes to the Android Market Developer Distribution Agreement (DDA) that suggest carrier billing is on the horizon. According to the posting, Google is introducing new payment options for the Android Market and has added “authorized carriers” as an indemnified party. Developers have been alerted of these changes and have 30 days to accept these new terms. Once this 30 day window is over, Google will be one step getting closer to launching this payment alternative. Any Android users looking forward to carrier billing or do you still prefer the comfort of plastic?

Finally! The carriers should have demanded this a long time ago…
Will Apple do the same for AppStore?

Would it be available worldwide or only US?

I prefer to pay as you go. It will make me think twice about ordering things from the market.

I work as a customer service supervisor in the cellular industry, and though this won’t affect my company directly in the near future, I have mixed feelings about it. Additional revenue is always welcome, but having endured the (ongoing) avalanche of complaints over premium short code charges on people’s bills, this is the kind of thing that makes my CSR’s gouge their own eyes out.

    Customer: “I didn’t authorize these bull***t charges!”
CSR: “Didn’t you say your teenage son uses that phone”
Customer “Well he says he didn’t do it. He wouldn’t lie to me!”
    CSR: (facepalm)
