Google partnering with Sony on a new television service

google-sony-tv

Google is looking to leverage its foothold in the online video realm by partnering with Sony on a new television service to be called Google TV. The new service will be an Android-based solution that will hook into online video repositories like YouTube and Hulu and serve up online content either through a set-top box or directly by embedding the software into your flashy new Sony HDTV. With Android at its core and Chrome as the browser, the service will provide access to online websites such as Twitter and Picasa and will open up a new arena for television-based application development. Google and Sony have also reached out to Logitech who will be developing a line of peripherals to control your new Google TV. Last but not least, a fourth heavy hitter known as Intel may also be joining this venture as the new TV media platform will reportedly run on the Intel Atom chipset. More than just a concept, the set-top box is reportedly at an advanced stage of development and is being tested by Dish Network. With four major players involved with this new Google TV service, should Roku, Boxee, and everyone else be a bit nervous?

i foresee an underpowered HTPC at an absurd price/rent.

if you must have SatTV then maybe it would be worth it to have everything on one device

No, the competition has no reason to be nervous. There will probably not be any money or advertising behind this at all.

…wait, what company did you say it was?

with all the “heavy hitters” involved in this it’s gonna have one hell of a marketing campaign.
but then again, that’s what i thought would happen with the nexus one…

So MeeGo has a competitor, huh? Cool. Now to see how many manufacturers are willing to use it, and marry itself to Google, or the agnostic MeeGo solution. Glad to see things moving.

I definitely think competitors should be nervous, and consumers as well. Just like others have said and with other articles about Google’s dominance…I don’t care what anyone says about Google being a “Do no harm” type of company. 2 things:
    1. I dont think its good for one company to be able to have so much information and data about your habits.

    2. All this means is more free stuff in exchange for ad placement; which ultimately devalues products and services to the point everything is free and nothing is paid for. (Free GPS & Maps, Free Games, Free software, free phone calls etc)… AND IS ULTIMATELY ANNOYING AS HELL!!

So end result your response to me would simply be “well don’t use google services” Personally Gmail is the only one I use. But I just wish other people could understand or see the big picture before jumping aboard for new products and services and just be informed about stuff. (Negative points expected)

Here’s the deal, whether you use Dish,Direct TV, Cable providers whomever they all have the ability to view what you view since they transmit it and know what’s on the set at any time. You channel surf, they know you watch a commercial , they know what and how long you put up with the commercial.
It’s all data mining and your info is being sold.

There’s already commercials on TV. In fact, this is where we are used to seeing commercials the most, right? What would change? In fact, the ads would be more relevant, which could be a good thing!

Wasn’t ViiV the AMD answer to the Intel marketing thingy? Or was Intel with ViiV and AMD with something else? They were so stupid, I can’t remember.

Why do I have this feeling that this is the start of Super Google? With this, the 1GBPS internet, Android, Chrome OS, Google Voice, Buzz, Gmail, Google Ads, and the search engine itself, they will touch just about every kind of tech/communication device there is. What will they go after next? Does Google own any music or movie service yet or maybe a standalone GoogleNav systems?

I know Apple is big on NDA on their products and secrecy when it comes to their roadmap… next time Steve Jobs, check the notes of your Board of Directors! ‘Cuz it looks like Google’s CEO, Eric Schmidt, was a busy bee note taker when he was on Apple’s Board!

GTV? China hates the big G! W/o China they’ll never make it! It’ll just be YouTube channel stuff and nothing more. They need to stick to searching. No one cares about google not even google! Find something more creative to do, instead of snatching others ideas and trying to buy everything up. The money is going to run out one day. One day soon.
