Fandango introduces a new movie ticketing service for mobile phones

Looking to impress your girlfriend on that “oh so important” first movie date? Look no further than Fandango to help you skip the ticket line and stroll right up to seating without greasing the palm of any theater employee. Starting today, Fandango is launching a new mobile ticket service that will allow customers to purchase movie tickets online and have them delivered directly to a mobile handset. The ticket will arrive as a QR code that can be displayed on a phone and scanned by movie theater employees in lieu of a paper ticket. The program will require special handheld scanners that are currently installed in a handful of theaters across the country. Hit the jump to see if your local movieplex is on this coveted list.

Te following theaters will have the necessary equipment to scan these new mobile tickets:

  • New York: City Cinemas 1, 2 & 3, Angelika Film Center, East 86th Street Cinemas, Village East Cinema, Beekman Theatre, The Paris Theatre.
  • New Jersey: Manville 12 Plex.
  • Houston: Angelika Film Center.
  • Dallas/Plano: Angelika Dallas; Angelika Plano.
  • San Diego: La Mesa Grossmont Center, Clairemont Town Square Stadium.
  • Bakersfield: Valley Plaza 16.
  • Sonoma County: Rohnert Park 16.
  • Hawaii: Ward Stadium, Kahala Theater, Kapolei 16, Mililani Stadium.

Useful if it were available in more theaters. Give it time I guess.

Hey I see a theater close to me , I’m going to check it out. I am just dying to see the look on the guy face; here’s my receipt, and whip out my phone to scan.

So you dont think that his/her work would inform and train its employees first? This thing will take years to be popular just like airplane’s tickets on cellphone.

Interesting, they say QR code but the photo shows a DataMatrix, very different. Guess as long as the theater has a capable reader, it doesn’t really matter…

I cant wait for theater to roll out signal blocking at movie theaters. Its just so annoying when people text or answer the phone during the movies.

This would never happen. First, the wireless companies pay a lot of money for their frequencies to let someone jam them; they would have the FCC stop it. Second, the theater would be liable if someone had to call 911 and their signal was jammed.

        TypicalVerizonDBAG,

Your statement is racist and also very incorrect statically. Despite prevailing stereotype, Whites, not Blacks, collect greatest share of public aid dollars. So if he is on welfare (which I doubt) there is a greater chance he is not black.

That rant you just did sounds like a guy that plays a lot of Call of duty Modern Warfare.

As for hat we really should be talking about. I think that this could be a great thing. Buy movie tickets on your phone anywhere and when you get to the theater just swipe the screen by a reader to get in. Awesome.

A local theater did this about a year ago with regular barcodes. It didn’t work out so well I guess because they got rid of all their handheld scanners.

I’m betting the execution was poor. The only way this will succeed is when it is very convenient. For example not all smartphone screens can be rad well by bar code scanners.

The reason why I am positive on this is because I have been using CardStar on my iPhone at “Stop & Shop” and “CVS” and it has been working out really well. Now I am hoping I can get ride of all those keychain member cards and just have vendors scan the barcode off my phones display.

By the way. I just read that CardStar is coming out for Blackberry and Android on May first. I hope it works out well for those devices as well.

Couldn’t people create fake tickets this way?…like hack into something and just create fake barcodes?

Couldn’t someone just photoshop a picture of a ticket at every other theater and print it on thick paper to get into movies free? Would be a lot easier than hacking into “something” to watch free movies.

Point is, the majority of the people won’t or don’t know how and Hollywood will still get its money.
