Apple iPad pre-order numbers top 150,000, reservations a success

ipad-stock-launch

One of our Apple connects recently hit us up and broke down some important iPad figures. According to him, Apple stores received around 300-350 (on average) reservations for store pick-ups on day one, and now sit at around 700 reservations so far (72 hours in). This doesn’t count people who pre-ordered the device online, just those that wish to physically go into an Apple store and pick up their reserved unit on launch day.

The figures that we’ve seen floating around of about 150,000 pre-orders, we’re told, are extremely accurate thus far but obviously don’t include people’s store reservations. We have also been told Apple’s flagship 5th Avenue store in New York now holds around 1600 reservations for iPads, with 800 in the first day, and about 400 a day since.

Lastly, store reservations seem to be split around 50% for the 32GB unit, 30% for the 64GB unit and about 20% for the 16GB, which is what, “Apple was expecting.”

They could sell a million preorder before the first one ships. That means a lot of people simply want a bigger iPhone while they’re at home, on a train, or plane.

Here in NYC, millions commute by train. They’ll be reading the papers, browsing, maybe teleconferencing, during that hour.

At home, who wants to squirrel themselves away in front of a desktop, again? I’ll take the couch, with the family around, using the Remote to adjust the music, checking personal mail that’s firewalled at work.

Meh, it’s not for everyone. What is?

You are correct it is a limited device. I know several attorney’s who have pre-ordered this device. They didn’t pre-order because they thought it was such a great device, but more of a novely and because they can afford this novelty “giant” ITouch.

I will wait until fall for the MS Courier or HP Slate (which runs full Windows 7) not this limited iPod touch. Already have one of those. Oh and BTW this device does not change the world, just apples product lineup.

I disagree a little. I am an attorney and I am getting it so I can scan in some material when I present to a court. The podiums are always small, so this should help me get organized. I am also looking forward to using the keynote on it for doing presentations to clients and for the CLEs I teach.

ALL devices are limited. Even the fastest PC will not take you to the moon.

The question is: Does it do what I need? and does it do it well?

I could easily do that with my Droid and Google doc or documents to go. Either program lets me adjust spreadsheets on the fly. And with Google doc my files can be public/shared so others can make adjustments.

Pfft. This iPad is a joke. If you want something much better, and just as portable, get a Macbook Air.

It is a limited device, but given that it is not intended to be the sole device of anyone, is that such a big deal?

Personally, I would want a device that did more and in particular was more suitable for ebooks, but if this device suits people’s needs then why shouldn’t they order one.

One thing that is quite interesting is the way BGR have avoided making any negative comments about how fast the online pre-orders have dropped off with 80% of that 150k coming on day one.

I just wonder. Why dont the ebook devices come up with a small duall screen eBooks. Technically, two small screen should be cheaper than one big screen and it would also give the feel of a real book.

There are concepts like the courier or larger version like the entourage edge that do go for two screens, the main issues seems to be battery life and finding a reason for the second screen as if its just an ereader then you only need to read one page at a time.

What so many people seem to dismiss is the entire environment proposition that is built around this ACCESS DEVICE. It is not the pad itself, it is iTunes, mail, iBooks, and all the other things still being developed. And while I definitely like Apple products, those who dismiss all their products out of hand are welcome to go buy a Zune—now there’s a success story.
