Apple Mac Pro refresh coming Tuesday?
Apple fans waiting to scoop up the latest and greatest Mac Pro have been drooling at every rumor and waiting patiently for these half-truths to come true. Circulating today is yet another rumor to get those technology taste buds tingling by suggesting once again that the Mac Pro will receive a processor overhaul of colossal proportions extremely soon. According to anonymous sources, the upcoming Mac Pro will rock the recently announced Intel Core i7-980x processor which will clock in at a fast 3.33GHz with TurboBoost to 3.6GHz and feature 6 cores and 12 threads of processing power, a 32nm architecture, Socket LGA1366 and 130W TDP. Before your knees buckle and your head hits the floor, make sure you circle March 16th on your calendar as that is the date these bundles of joy are expected to debut if this rumor pans out.

but I bet there won’t be Blu Ray

That’ll be a mean Mac Pro.

Maybe this machine isn’t targeted at you? The Mac Pro really is a beast for the video editing industry. Having worked in it as an intern once – It’s very interesting how I wasn’t allowed to use Vegas. It just wasn’t anywhere near what Final Cut could do.
The Mac Pro has ridiculous powers, but it really isn’t aimed at normal users – That’s the iMac for them. Though I honestly they would drop the entry price slightly.
Oh well, I am dreaming on a price drop.

That argument is really kind of old. In my office I ditched Windows and started using VectorWorks Designer over AutoCAD and Merlin to replace MS Project on a few workstations along with a few Mac-only apps and cut my per-workstation costs by about $12k per. The Mac Pro runs about the same as a decent high-end workstation. My new server is a Mac Mini – no more CALs for Exchange Server, and the Mac server (with unlimited licenses) ran about $3k less than the PC bid (with 25 CALs). Yeah, I could build my own box, but I’ve got 3-year warranties. You’ve got a valid point, but so do I, and I didn’t reduced my operating costs by a bunch last year. YMMV.

Have you thought that people who uses this machine for their jobs probably needs a legitimate machine and not a Hackintosh?
I’m not discrediting Hackintoshes, as I have had a Mini 10 before – Hackintoshed. However, for a person who works with video editing and post production for an agency… I can’t afford the external cost of losing a contract, and future contracts as they happen. Reason? If audits are going on, and they check me… I’ll be in trouble.
Companies don’t want to get into these troubles, and they want to avoid any legality issues with their contracted workers. It’s the same reason I have to pay for all my software – Legally. From cheap codecs to the oh expensive Final Cut.

Most people who claim this don’t do a like for like comparison as they think the Mac Pro has consumer processors in it, it doesn’t, they’re Xeon grade units with extras the consumer chips don’t get, like on-chip memory management units.
Do a comparison with the right chip ( you need to check the chip model number, not just the generation and clock speed ) and the price of your home-grown PC suddenly goes up considerably.
Having said that, Apple’s memory prices are laughable.
actually… i’ve priced an equivalent pc being built… and the entry Lvl mac likeness would come in at about $500 less. However, that is with the cheapest motherboard available w/o equivalent pci speeds, a case that only has space for two hard-drives instead of 4, and most importantly to legitimate non thieving consumers ….. no legal software. And of course having to keep up with all those separate warranties instead of just having the highest rated company in pc support just one call or a two hour drive away.

The macs don’t have to be free… just sub par parts, customer service from india, and three year old technology so everyone can afford them like the ones I have to sell everyday.
And please make it so I can’t do research online for fear of someone stealing my identity or crashing my computer for fun.
“oh, but the free health care would be payed for by all the americans with exactly what jobs again?”
“Oh, only lost 20,000 this week. We need cheaper and cheaper stuff then.”
“Oh, that gives us less jobs and China more. I thought they were already communist.”
“Oooohhh, you want us to be, too. Then I won’t have to work unless my government makes me.”
That sounds freakin’ great!!!!… Where do i vote to make that happen?
we are all entitled to free Mac Pro’s….and healthcare
I hate to be grammer police.
too != to
I agree with palmrocks, MacPro’s are way over priced.
That would be grammar…

I actually had a look at the current Mac Pros just last night.
I have to say, Apple really blew my mind.
$3000 base price for a computer with a 512 MB video card from 2 years ago and no upgrade path. The outdated processor and slow RAM were really enticing.
… Or you could buy an Armani suit and an equivalent computer anywhere else but the Apple Store.
I’m sure the markup on their next version will be even more “intuitive” and “innovative”.

How did you look at a mac last night and see an outdated processor and slow RAM? They start at $2500, not $3000. They use the absolute latest xeon processors and true 64bit access to DDR3 RAM that isn’t bottlenecked; because of the way xeon processors work with the OS. I agree the video cards for Macs tend to have less ram than gaming cards and are a little slow on the stock machine, but 2 year old technology they are not. I doubt you actually checked these machines out.

i agree with you mate, i have a mac pro and it is a love it to bits after doing a few mod’s on it.But i do agree that i paid wayyyy to much for it.Apple is a company that likes to lock you into their eco system
but fuck it i have windows 7 dual booted on this machine so i get to have the best of both worlds
First, Macs have no official blu-ray burning support.
Second, FCP is more stable and more intuitive than Vegas; but I find that editing on FCP is slower because where, in Vegas, you always have at least -some- preview no matter how many effects you pile on (Vegas reduces frame rate and resolution to keep things moving) FCP requires you to render after every change, and even moving things around on the timeline can force a re-render. Before making the switch, I HIGHLY encourage borrowing someone’s FCP rig for a week or so.
I actually switched FROM FCP to Vegas, haven’t looked back.
My video editing business has also boomed as well plus the fact that I too am not spending on overpriced hardware anymore.
FYI, I also came across that new Acer Laptop with the new 3D screen. All I can say is wow! Now, to implement that and create 3D video in HD aka as BLURAY!
Agreed, I’m sure Apple will bring this roughly 2 years from now and charge up the ying yang and say they have introduced this new cutting edge technology.

Just checked out the technology over at Acer. Wow…multitouch screen and 3D to boot! Nice, very nice! Let’s see how long Apple will implement this and say that they’ve invented it.
WELL SAID
I used PC’s for several years in my multimedia business. I was doing heavy audio, video, photo, and design. When the stuff worked it was fine. Thing was, it started as a very small business with just me and partner and we were growing pretty fast. This meant that we were constantly having to make upgrades and add new hardware and software in the first 2 years. I’m not exaggerating when i say that we lost, on average a day a week due to hardware and software compatibility issues.
Since I went Mac after major theft, I’ve probably lost 2 days total in the last 3 years while still updating and upgrading at a high rate. And, at least all the other professionals I work with, appreciate the easy compatibility they now have with us.

i love the Pro Towers when they’re opened up like the pic above and u can see all the guts. That sh*t turns me on mate. Can’t help myself. Nice pic.
That is not the latest Mac Pro in the photo. The current version has the CPUs and RAM on a slide out daughter card. The new processors fit in the old sockets so it should be an easy upgrade for Apple.
If im going to spend so much money on this i would rather get an alienware. But then again imagine what i could build with the money i would spend on this….Super Computer anyone?
Heck, I’m not plugging anybody when I say that Digital Storm computers make the Mac look like a sick puppy. I said it cause it’s true.
lol… you drank the cool-aid too! Their comps are for gaming… not WORKstation class. Apples to “oranges.” and they cost more at that! I wish all of the gamers would do some real research into computing and real world applications before speaking. I don’t know anyone who has ever bought a mac for gaming and if there are some, then they have too much of mommy and daddies money.
Why would Apple move to non-server class processors when intel is releasing those the same day as well? I wish people would stop speculating about things they haven’t got a clue about. The i7 class is not suitable for mac pros. This genius report really isn’t very genius.
I’m buying the new Mac Pro when it comes out. Hope the price doesn’t go up. Drive the price down! But I need it for my video editing business.
At any price point for a Mac Pro you could not buy a BOXX computer!!!!!! What does that says to you. Absolutely nothing. You need to stop repeating this misleading argument of price. Apples to Apples you can’t buy a Ford model with leather seats for the price of the same model with fabric seats.
Stop saying that. I builded my own PC box and I am happy for what is does. But I am also happy with my Mac Pro. PEOPLE, do you expect to build your own card, to create your own blue jeans and shirts???. You pay and pay more for that service every day, even for the pencil you use. And if you find yourself paying more because you went to a store and you can build your own device, that is fine. But stop fooling yourself with this price comparisons between MAcs and PCs. Do you really bother every car owner who spend more money on a car that is not the most affordable???. What is your point. Oh yet NONE.
Thank you, you will never stop complaining and We will hear from you very soon.
