Fido launches the BlackBerry Curve 8520

fido-bb-8520

Hear that noise? That’s Fido saying goodbye to 2006 and hello to… 2009? Fido has finally caved in and introduced a modern-ish BlackBerry with today’s release of the Curve 8520. Attractively priced at $50 with a 3-year voice and data contract, the 8520 is also available to pre-paid customers for the one-time cost of $400. Throw in a CityFido plan and data add-on and you really can’t argue against this device if you’re in the market for an affordable smartphone. You know, unless you care about 3G.

*sigh* why the hell is BGR encouraging users to sign 3 year contracts in Canada !?!? WHY ?!?!

In today’s context, it makes 0 sense to do what you got 4 new wireless companies launching their networks : Wind, Dave, Videotron and Public mobile. Just wait a few more months pple so you can compare before signing your soul away to Robbers or Bellus !

Don’t shoot the messenger! BGR is just reporting the news.

PS:Frankly, bestbuy is selling the Rogers GSM curve for $29.99 (w/ $50 GC).

I am happy that Fido was able to add this to their line up. They most severely lack decent phones on their network.

They still lack decent phones. Fido consider themselves a ‘discount’ network, on par with Koodo or Solo, not up to the task of competing with Rogers directly (most likely a mandate by the parent).

Essentially the 3 big boys sat down, sliced up the low-end market and pretend like there are 6 carriers instead of 3. The low-end 3 take care of the light users, while the big 3 take care anyone else with some amazing market collusion on pricing. Since the average consumer doesn’t understand branding or market segmentation, they still see 6 carriers, all with similar pricing, and they presume that’s the price of doing business. Harhar. What a joke. I hate the Canadian Wireless Market..

By 50%… dang, Verizon is giving them away for free when you buy one. Plus, they are already 50.00 to 100.00 less then AT&T. This shows you AT&T deosn’t have the money to do big sales like Verizon does. The 8520 verdict
