Motorola releases its Android 2.1 update schedule for the DROID/MILESTONE and the CLIQ/DEXT
After receiving heavy criticism for its premature announcement of the Android 2.1 update for the DROID, Motorola has decided that “transparency” is now its favorite buzz word and has released an Android 2.1 update schedule for its current lineup of Android handsets. Though a nice gesture, the update schedule is short on details and leaves us with more questions than answers. According to Motorola’s schedule, the DROID update will be rolling out “soon” with no concrete date or time frame provided. DROID owners should be thankful for their “coming soon” status, though, as the owners of the Motorola CLIQ have to wait until Q2 2010 and those with the DEXT will have to wait until Q3 2010 to get their update, if they even get it all (see Europe). A similar scenario applies to the Milestone with European Milestone owners receiving their update sometime in Q2 2010, while those in Latin America and Asia-Pacific must wait patiently for Motorola to evaluate the feasibility of an update.

Q: “why can’t you use the Nexus One firmware on the Droid”
A: Open Source does not equal universally compatible. Open source simply means you have access to the source code which you can then modify and/or use as you want. In that respect, the core android OS is open source.
Q: Can you add apps to an Android device from anywhere besides the handeheld device store
A: Yes. Every android phone has setting to allow other install sources. All you have to do is download the app (from web, email, market, wherever) and install it. No rooting necessary.
IPhone users are most definitely not the only sheep in the world, but I don’t see how having itunes on your computer and buying apps has any advantage over downloading them in your browser and installing on an android phone.
Man…by the time the droid gets 2.1, the Nexus One will be available on Verizon. And who knows what other Android devices will be out there. Like the Bravo or something that has the optical track pad, not that blackberry ball b.s.
I really hope the “over-the- air software upgrade” means a true android 2.1!

What about the Eris? Haven’t seen any comments or news on when it will be updated.
@T
Why do you have to post when you don’t know what you’re talking about? There is not a bit of VZW bloatware on the Droid or Droid Eris nor is there anything “crippled” on those or any other VZW smartphones.
Why do people assume VZW is some big, evil corporation out to ruin everybody’s mobile experience. They’re a company who has always catered to the needs of their customers hence the huge customer base an approval ratings higher than every other US provider.
Every update for every phone comes direct from the manufacturer & believe it or not, VZW testing them all before release to make sure they don’t kill your phone is a good thing. When the updates aren’t tested properly you end up with other problems or the original issues not getting fixed (i.e. Nexus 1, BB Storm, etc.). I’d personally rather have a carrier that’s concerned about its customers and is willing to stand up to phone manufacturers and not just accept whatever crap software they may put out.
Amazon MP3 and Verizon Visual Voicemail, both are uninstallable bloatware. kthx.
but yeah, its like they never tested the BB Storm before they released it.
Amazon MP3 has absolutely nothing to do with VZW. I’ll give you that you can’t get rid of the VVM shortcut, but that’s all it is, a shortcut, not an app.
Point with BB Storm is that even though there were multiple issues with software versions pre-5.0, VZW released them anyway under relentless customer pressure. That was a big mistake & I’d rather not see it repeated with the Droids.
