Rumored HTC Scorpion sounds killer with 1.5GHz processor
May God help you if you’re not a fan of Android, because if the last few weeks are anything to go by, we’re all in for one hell of an assault over the coming year. The latest device to enter our consciousness is the Scorpion, known to HTC employees as the Olympian. Said to be a WiMAX device with a 1.5GHz Snapdragon processor and running build FRE65C of Android 2.2 aka “Froyo”, the Scorpion sounds like the prototypical device that keeps geeks like us from being able to have a good night’s sleep. The problem with this one is that the aforementioned processor is so brand new that it will be a long time before this rumored device or any other comes to market with it in tow. Guess that’s what Ambien is for.
This relentless proliferation of Android phones and disparate OS versions can only be hurting the platform. I have an iPhone but will also get an Android phone soon. The issue is that you are never quite sure of your phone will be upgradeable unless the manufacturer says it is.
How can app developers hope to efficiently push out apps to a hardware- and OS version-fragmented user base??? Sad.

Unfortunately you are totally correct. I have the htc hero in UK and don’t know when or even if it will be updated.
A great move by android would be to level the playing field and allow all models to be upgraded, but then how will they make their money?

True and False, all phones should have the same version however hardware should be costume like computers but yet with a set standard for instance the HTC Hero is every bit as powerful as the Iphone but the games suck! N1 is even more powerful then both but the games suck!
Ever consider the fact that there may not be any significant changes to the kernel in any of those updates, and that any given app would run just as well on 1.6 as 2.2?

To answer your question seriously… yes it does sound promising. Last year they lost 1.6 billion in the same quarter… so their finances are turning around.
…and the T-Mobile buying them rumors still exist.
Well… speaking *only* to the financial aspect of it, because I may actually share your cynicism over them… they’re actually being quite smart by shedding their low-to-negative revenue customers by attrition or just cutting them off entirely. I work with someone that gets 2 smartphones, unlimited data, unlimited minutes, unlimited texts for 100 bucks a month. They won’t let her upgrade, and have basically given her the ultimatum change your plan or leave, or hope beyond all odds that your phone always recharges and never breaks. That’s smart business, since it’s about making money. Clearly if their revenue, or in this case loss, is shrinking, they’re doing something right in spite of numerical losses.
Yeah, them. They’ll get booted sooner or later… and it’ll be an awfully large sticker shock when they see what everything costs now.
