Barnes and Noble to roll out the Nook to retail stores starting this week

Nook-Barnes-Noble

It has been a little over two months since the Barnes and Noble Nook first went on sale and the popular e-reader is finally ready to make its nationwide in-store debut. With Amazon and its Kindle under assault by the book publishers over e-book pricing and the news media for its Macmillan book pulling stunt, the timing could not be more apropos with the Nook expected to be available for purchase in stores within the next few days. Folks looking to score a Nook before the Valentines Day holiday can use the online Nook locator to see which local stores have one in stock starting February 10th. Anyone looking to buy or hoping to get a Nook come Sunday?

It would be worth the 259.00 if you could scan any books bar code and download it that way.

@Steve Glansburg: The nook runs the Android OS underneath.

Got mine Friday. he USB cord was shorted out and the swipe did not work for turning pages in a book. When type was enlarged, not enough on the page.
Took it back to B&N Sat. There customer service leaves a lot to be desired.

Does it seem odd that I’ve been discouraged from reading because regular books can be big an bulky? I’m really really wanting to try an e-reader, because I really think I’d like it. I used to love reading all the time in high school, and I’ve lately been remembering how much I missed getting into a good book.

It’s not that odd… I’m a reader, and have been dying to get an E-Reader… Kindle still looks like it’s the best, but Amazon isn’t doing anything along the Sony/Google/B&N way of thinking in making the files compatible. If Amazon bought into the compatible format idea, or allowed other makers to use their azw file format, and allowed Kindle to read epub and pdf, it’d be an instant buy for me…

      • Usty says:

The Kindle can read pdf now. Still SOL on epub though. I use calibre (freeware) to convert both types of files to mobi and read them on the kindle like that. It’s really not too difficult.

Mmmm, should I look into the Nook or wait until Alex e-reader is released at the end of the month. What to do……what to do….

    • T says:

if you’re going to wait… wait for color e-ink toward the end of the year.

      • Schwack says:

toward the end of the year??? Geesh, don’t know if I can hold out until then. I’ve been doing a lot of biz traveling and could use a “thinner” option than lugging around books on the plane….

        • T says:

then I’d go with Alex… since it has the bigger color touchscreen, if you’re a newspaper or magazine reader you won’t miss out on as much.

Can I transfer pdf files to the Nook from my computer and then read them ? On the kindle I have heard you have to go through conversions and at the end it messes it up anyway.
    thanks

The Alex reader looks interesting, but the design and asthetics leave a lot to be desired.. Having looked at both, and just received my Nook, I’m thinking I would not enjoy the additional length of the Alex reader.. now if they were to put the big color screen on the SIDE and have the book open up like a… BOOK.. I’d get one in a heart beat! :)

Both will be good readers I think.. I prefer the Nook form factor at this point.

Thanks for the feedback. I guess I could visit a local BN store and try out a Nook first. I’m strictly looking for a book reader and not really a magazine reader. With so many e-readers coming out…kinda hard to figure out which one will be a solid hit, company won’t got out of business, etc…

Probably a pretty safe bet that Amazon, B&N, and Sony are going to be around for a long time to come, so you can’t really go wrong with any of their devices. The others, well, buyer beware.

I have had the Nook since Christmas and there has already been two software upgrades to the Android. Both were very nice improvements. I got the nook to read books, not to surf the internet or read email. Both Kindle and Nook does that great, but the Nook has some features I like such as borrowing ebooks from the library.

I got mine on 12/23. I went back and forth between the nook and Kindle, but I’ve been happy with my choice. It’s a great device.

I have the nook and went through the same issue, kindle or Nook. Well, it looks like I made the right choice since B&N isn’t going to go through the same issues that Amazon is with the publishers. As for my impressions, I like it a lot however, I wish it was a little lighter. Reading is a breeze and can be addicting. B&N has deals on books for under $5, in fact, I bought a few that were $1.90!

Who cares about a color e-ink screen unless you read a lot of news mags or can surf the web, but for just reading novels, it’s not necessary. They just put out another update this week as well, v1.2 which has a few nice updates. Because it runs on Android I think they will continue with frequent updates.

Yeah, I was in the same boat last month, Carl. I was doing all of these searches on Kindle vs. Nook and was getting a bit overwhelmed with various impressions and the Pros vs. Cons. Right when I thought I’d wait for February and check out the Nook, my magazine (Esquire) highlighted the Alex e-reader so that caught my eye and was leaning towards it! Hopefully the Nook’s latest software upgrade fixes the issues I’ve been reading about.

You do realize that Esquire magazine is for ghey men? My guess is you do. Looking forward to their impending bankruptcy.

What? Really? It’s for ghey men? I was wondering why there were a lot of pics of near-nude men! Back to Playboy!

I got one Friday for my wife as a Valentine’s Day gift. I installed the manual upgrade to v. 1.2 today and it’s working sweet. It takes a couple of minutes to figure out all the finger gestures on the color screen, but otherwise it’s very user friendly. I think my wife will be thrilled. I got the silicone sleeve for it as well, and that adds a dash of color to it. So far I would recommend it to a friend.

Doesnt barnes and nobles nook require you to be in a store to download a book or using your at home internet over wifi? where as amazon kindle sends out wifi signals so you can download books almost anywhere in the USA? cause thats a big deal right there.

    Thumb up Thumb down -4

    • Dakes says:

No, the Nook has 3G service and Wifi. You can sideload books or documents if you want. If you are in a brick and mortar store, you will connect to the in-house wifi and they usually give you some cool deals on ebooks and occationally a free cookie.

I have had.my Nook since the beginning of December and I really like it. The Nook has wifi and 3G so you can purchase and download books anywhere. I also uploaded ebooks I previously purchased in ePub format for my Sony PRS-505. With the second update to the Nook many of the issues reviewers had with the Nook have been resolved.
