BlackBerry OS 6.0 in the works…
One of our most-solid BlackBerry connects has just dropped word that internally, RIM is starting to work on OS 6.0.
We can’t reveal details about the OS at this time, but in addition to molding what is OS 6.0, we also know that RIM is working on OS 5.2 which should debut sometime this year. Logical upgrade paths? Definitely. Let’s hope it won’t just be more evolutionary RIM madness, though. More as we get it…

Didn’t 5.0 just drop officially??? Funny to me that before the first is fully out they are working on the next.
I guess it’s what makes them RIM, looking forward to whatever they are planning on doing.

5.0 is really not much of an upgrade over 4.6 though…
STILL waiting for an official version of 5.0 for my Tour. Step your game up Verizon.

That is why i left the storm2 & got the pre plus because RIM is taking forever with innovating their damn devices. All the blackberrys do the same chit just different model, codename & size & shape. Go palm!!!
Actually, While the base functionality (OS wise) and design IS RIM’s decision, A lot of the problem is actually carriers.
RIM released OS 5.0 to ALL carriers on 31, December of last year, BUT carriers are the reason why we’re not getting it officially just yet.
I personally have 3 devices (8320, 9000, 9630) and I find that the BlackBerry is personally better suited for me than the Pre / Pre Plus / Pixi / Pixi plus, or even the iPhone 3G, simply based on the amount of messaging I do.
While I do admit that RIM do quite often leave something to be desired with device releases and software upgrades, You have to give them credit for at least TRYING, and managing to keep up with the iPhone and other (Android) devices fairly well.
Palm had to get to come very close to going into administration in order to achieve their “revival” to become a viable player in the new “era” of mobile devices.
Did the OS 5.0 for the Blackberry Bold on AT&T come out officially?, because all I’m seeing the the 4.6
No real reason to downvote this response. He’s got a point. I love my BlackBerry Tour. It was a no brainer to upgrade from my 8330 after less than 12 months. But in reality, all it gave me was some more RAM, camera, screen resolution. Those were all welcome improvements – but the “functionality” of the device didn’t change a bit. The OS (4.7) isn’t much different from 4.5. And even with 5.0.0.419 on my device – the functionality changes were ho-hum…
I hope bigger, better things are coming our way in OS 6.0!
Whoops! My response was meant to be under Abercrombie & Fitch;s post…. My bad…
idk what everyones crying about, all the smartphones are good. I think it just depends on hat you need it for or want it for. on any given day i might get bored with my phone and feel like jumping on to another os. i think the two biggest gripes for bb are the web and the ui. as as far as the web goes bb needs to improve to keep up with the competition but the ui is fine, other os’s have multiple screens, bb on the other hand has folders, maybe they don’t look as cool but it still serves the same purpose. the only ui i trully don’t care for is iphone. i think android and webos ui looks cool, omnia 2 has the best ui for wm, but i still like my bb.
I hope the new software allows me to CHANGE MY PROFILE PIC ON FACEBOOK ON MY 9700:(!
The problems with Blackberry that I hope this forthcoming 5.2 and 6.0 releases will address are as follows:
1.) Web browser – quite simply the browser on my 9000 running 5.0.0.411 sucks.
2.) Memory stability: every version of OS from the original launch OS on my Bold has been plagued by memory leaks / freeze ups etc. Including OS 5.xxx
3.) SDK – come on why is it so hard for people to develop for the Berry. Compared to the cool stuff I can get on an Apple iProduct.
4.) Stop the stupid download image dialog for every html email
5.) VOIP support – where are the Blackberry compatible Skype apps etc…
I love my Bold for messaging and in general overall. However the above would make it fantastic. As it is now I have been flirting with Android as my next phone…
great, should drop in what 2020?

Clearly, RIM needs to catch up on the browser and APP side of things. I will get a Storm within the next 6-9 months but am WAITING for RIM to reveal their browser strategy.
The iPhone is a fantastic device but it currently has limitations that make it inappropriate for my mixed business and personal use.
I suspect that RIM is having a hard time making the user experience what it now needs to be in order to compete with the iPad/Phone.
Just started on os 6? If that is really the case, the company is doomed in the general market imho.
please please please let os 6 be a partial rewrite to remove bad code and optimize the units.
If I was a corporate user I would most definitely want a BlackBerry over any other device. However, I am not a corporate user. Email and security are NOT my primary needs. I understand where you’re coming from, but that only applies to a certain amount of users. And once again, I’m only thinking about this from a consumer’s POV. Other platforms are growing at a much faster rate than the BlackBerry. Why should I stick around and wait for them to do something?
there is nothing stopping RIM from releasing software updates on their own… or even selling unbranded handsets for that matter… but they refuse to even do this…
here here so true grow some big ones RIM and take the
market in a new direction.
you have a good product sell it.
The Blackberry is the best stand alone Smartphone out there the UI is great and the messaging phone in the world hands down ! The emailing of a Berry is second to NONE , the Battery life is second to NONE, the security is second to NONE ! The only thing Berry’s lack is a great web client period the end ! Had a BERRY tried the Pre ( it was good be horrid battery ) Had a IPhone also great for web suffering ( battery also stunk and Email was just a JOKE ! , also battery life was horrid ) In a nutshell is u wanna surf the web and u want your IPhone to die by lunch time get an IPhone.
