Is the Apple iPad OS just unfinished?
Bear with me on this one, alright? It’s a long shot, but part of me thinks this is a set up. Apple hasn’t gone over things like how notifications work, they didn’t address multitasking, and in some places, it felt like Steve & Co. purposely rushed over certain areas in the announcement.
What if there is going to be an iPhone SDK event/announcement before the Apple iPad actually hits stores? Apple said “late March” for the non-3G unit to be available and that’s curiously right when Apple usually holds its iPhone/iPod OS SDK events and where we’d most likely see iPhone OS 4.0 appear. Is it possible this is just to get the ball moving and Apple has some bigger stuff up its sleeve already? Multitasking, redone notifications, and a whole lot more, coming to both the iPhone platform as well as the iPad? Now, why release an SDK based on iPhone OS 3.2 and have devs code for that and then have to redo it, you might be asking, but iPhone 4.0, if it was announced in March would probably be a beta and not released to the public until June/July. That would give developers time to redo any applications for full 4.0 compatibility. Plus, the general public would get iPhone OS 3.2 while developers concurrently used iPhone OS 4.0 and developed for both that and the iPad. Maybe just wishful thinking, but heck, it would make sense.
I was really excited about this and was ready to buy immediately. Without flash support I do not see this as a viable netbook replacement. If you want this to be a true web surfing experience you need flash. I can forgive everything else no multi-task, no camera, etc… But to surf the net you need flash. Let’s face it, a lot of guys use the internet for porn. I certainly do. Most sites I go to require flash. Not supporting porn users is a huge flaw. A portable porn machine with a nice big screen. Wow a lot of guys want that all the way from teens sneaking away to beat off to married guys sick of their wives who secretly watch porn. FAIL

I could see this happening.. Something about that keynote was so damn weird. It almost felt surreal. So so so much different than the iPhone release. I felt like it was really disorganized and unfished. Its unlike Apple to show off an unfinished product, but it’s possible that they felt that they had to unveil the real thing as soon as they could.
I can see Apples motivation to show the real tablet off asap to kill all the internet speculation that, if given a few more weeks, could have ended up with “analysts” predicting the slate would turn into the batmobile, revive the dead, and have a 69′ AMOLED screen.
Another motivation for a rushed release would be to get people talking about it for a while and to acquire and dominate mindshare before they had to send it off to the FCC (and effectively reveal it).
I see where you’re going with this. Let developers do some basic things for the iPad now, so it can have SOMETHING when it’s released, and then give the 4.0 SDK when developers actually have an iPad to work with.

But I’m not holding my breath any longer. I waited so long for the Apple Tablet, and then they revealed that iPad crap. What a dream crusher! Apple just got me to cross over to the fanboy world, and then forced me out by revealing that…iPass!

All other geekish points aside- with that bezel, does anyone else think this thing looks like a digital picture frame? I call total lack of creativiy, if only from a visual perspective.
Yes, I think Steve did it on purpose when he right away surfed to a site with Flash so that the blue brick of incompatibility made such a notable appearance…
i have to agree with bg, and im curious if his his theory also might explain the absence of the camera on the test units. i’ve seen all these reports about the extra parts having a slot for it. would make sense for apple to not release a feature that still is buggy when they’re trying to create hype.

The consumer electronics landscape has changed exponentially since the iPhone first debuted some 3 years ago, a fact that everyone appears to realize except Apple/Jobs and his minions/iDiots.
Expectations were exponentially higher for this ‘New Creation’ than they were for the iPhone, Apple seriously dropped the ball, and Miguel, all of your childish hostility/nonsensical ranting/immature name-calling won’t change a thing.

What you fail to take into consideration is that the nonsense that Apple formerly pulled with the iPhone by blatantly omitting standard features (video recording, MMS, and on and on) that other devices long included, is that consumer expectation are much different/higher than they were some 3 to 5 years ago.
Introducing a media device sans even the most basic features (web camera, media card reader, USB port, et al) is inexcusable, and if you’d take a few minutes to read what is being posted throughout the WWW, you’ll see that Apple’s ‘New Creation’ is looking terribly underwhelming.
