AT&T rumored to lose iPhone exclusivity this Wednesday?
“But it’s tied down to AT&T…” Those may be words that you’ll never hear again when it comes to the iPhone. Now, it’s not written in stone just yet, but one of Hot Hardware’s inside sources feels very confident that AT&T will lose its iPhone exclusivity during Apple’s big announcement this week. If this is true, coupled with an announcement / beta release of iPhone 4.0, Apple’s iPhone sales could skyrocket — especially since some people have avoided the iPhone like the plague strictly because of AT&T. Where will the iPhone go? Will there be an unlocked version available? We’re not quite sure, but we’ll find out soon as it’s shaping up to be a big week for Apple with a tablet announcement, iPhone 4.0 and now possibly the iPhone may finally be unshackled from AT&T’s grip. One thing to consider, however, is that if AT&T loses its exclusivity this Wednesday, who’s going to want to buy an AT&T-locked iPhone until the next generation model comes out? That alone gives us some doubt.

Try doing that when you don’t have 3G service with the “other” guys……
I agree Joel but ATT has got to do something with the quality of voice transmissions. I had VZW for 5 years and when I switched to ATT I noticed a huge difference in call quality. I like to be able to surf and talk at the same time but VZW really kicks ATT in the britches when it comes to quality.
When I called ATT to cancel my account cause apple broke my iphone, the lady on the phone told me that the iphone would be available with VZW soon.
Now thats the ebst joke Ive heard in a while!
Is it really a big deal if the exclusivity is gone? AT&T will probably still be the best carrier to run it on.
If they release a Verizon version it’ll have to include a new CDMA radio…. which likely means a new Chipset manufacturer which likely means it’ll go through some growing pains. i don’t think the iphone supports TMO’s 3g bands so you’ll be looking at EDGE data only.
Man I hope so. I had AT&T and their coverage was fine in metro areas and large cities but when you travel, you can see the coverage decline. I have Verizon now, have traveled, and I have yet to have any coverage issues. Also, Verizon tends to take care of their customers customer service needs better than any other carrier I’ve had.

this would be stupid, scroll up a few articles and look at their Q1 report. Why would they lose it this soon? Especially when reports and rumors have been generated that it wouldn’t be worth it for Apple to make a CDMA iphone until they utilize LTE. i’m sorry, but i just don’t see big red getting it, at least not yet.
Losing exclusivity doesn’t mean Verizon necessarily.
You have to remember that Apple historically doesn’t aim for the next most logical business decision if it means tremendous investment (development of a completely new radio stack for the device)- they go for the low hanging fruit and do it well.
I’d say if it’s going to go anywhere in the US besides Att it’s T-Mobile.
Come on. Let’s just see it happen already. lol I mean this has been dragged out long enough and we need to see if it can happen. And if they can make money from it why would Verizon/Apple not do it? Trust me. If it is money smart then they will do it. And now the consumer can choose between Verizon and AT&T which I believe Verizon would win hands down.
Has anybody seen this on the 3GS device tree before?…….CDMA slots?

Personally I think they both suck. But I cant wait for the numbers to come out on how many THOUSANDS of customers left AT&T to go somewhere else. Yes. THOUSAND’S. People on Family Plans. Personally, I don’t know why someone just does not come out with a fast, simple to use, 64Gb with expandable memory, 4.5″ screen based on Linux. Oh yeah, something like that is coming to Sprint. The HTC SUPERSONIC….
