Orange CEO Delegate confirms Apple tablet?

Richard-CEo-Orange-France

Orange CEO Delegate, Stéphane Richard, in charge of operations in France, let go a bit of a bombshell when asked by a reporter whether an Apple tablet would be announced before the end of the month he responded, “yes.” Now, our French is a bit rusty, but AppleInsider is reporting a portion of the translation as such:

Elkabbach: According to weekly Le Point, in a couple of days Apple will be launching its tablet computer…
Richard: Yes.
Elkabbach: …equipped with a webcam.
Richard: Yes.
Elkabbach: Are Orange customers going to be able to enjoy it?
Richard: Of course!

Richard hasn’t really admitted to the tablets imminent release, however, by not outright denying the rumored tablets existence he has set off of firestorm amongst Apple fans. For those of you who do speak French we have the video queued up for you after the break. Let us know via the comments if we missed anything.

Am I the only human (that loves his ipod but prefers his pc over a mac) who thinks the idea of an apple tablet is pointless? Like the macbook air.

The MB Air was pointless with the ridiculous price and lack of everything

A Mac Tablet is not pointless at a reasonable price, but a underpowered $1000 tablet, it is.

And you are not the only one, I have my macbook and a Win desktop I can’t live without

If Apple shoots out some crazy new development where it can switch into some type of color e-reader mode, adds a front facing camera, and the ability to use the current app store it will sell like crazy.

A tablet that doesn’t do much and costs $1000, yes, that probably is pointless. However, if I could get a laptop, and for $50-$100 more, the top will pop out and it will become a touchscreen tablet, I would do it.

your not alone… I prefer the ipod as hardware, I cant stand itunes though! and the tablet doesnt make sense, the iphone already fits the market for a handheld pc. They need to focus on a more robust iphone.

If you talk to anyone involved in the content industry that will be significantly affected by the Apple Tablet (“iSlate”) — comics, magazines, etc. — everyone already knows it’s coming and are already preparing their content for it.

I speak a little French, not enough to translate the entire video though…

The gist of it though is that the new product (which he only said “yes” in acknowledgement to the questions of rumors as “yes I understand”) will be available to the benefit of Orange customers who chose to use said tablet, if available.

My French is pretty bad when it comes to the French speakers (they speak too fast for me to get it and dont enunciate enough), so I cant really say that Orange is going to carry tablet, but they are going to let the tablet come to their networks as well as home internet.

I found a translation in a website (see further below):

Journalist: Selon l’hebdomadaire Le Point, votre partenaire apple va lancer une tablette. (According to the weekly Le point, your partner apple will launch a tablet.)
    Exec: Oui. (Yes.)
    Journalist: Doté d’une webcam… (Equipped with a webcam…)
    Exec: Oui. (Yes)
Journalist: Est-ce-que les usagers d’Orange en bénéficieront aussi? (Will the subscribers of Orange benefit from it too?)
(Of course. They will benefit, even more easily because with the webcam, we will be able to transmit video in real time. We will modernize in some way this videophone that we have known for some years, and also, the scale of the network that we have put in place in service of the French will allow these new uses to develop everywhere.)

It sounds to me like Richard is saying that the main feature of the tablet, from the point of view of his telecom company, is a videophone.

I´m a native speaker and i can asure you that both yes are only acknowledgements to the questions/suggestions based on what le point magasin reported. He talked in general about what webcams over 3G means for mobility. On the other hand it´s acutally a fact that we´ll get an apple branded slate and that Orange in France (like O2 in UK, T-Mobile in Germany Telefonica in Spain and so on) will carry the Device.

I am a french native. Visiophone was a hold concept they had before France telecom rebrandred to Orange. He is most likely referring to the Tablet to be used with their home phone service and internet not cell phone.
