Google hosting Android press gathering January 5th
Today Google began sending out press invites to an event being held at Google’s corporate headquarters in Mountain View, CA on January 5th — just two days before the start of CES. The invite does not get into specifics but we think we know what is going on. Hit up the break for a pic of the full invitation, and we’ll be covering it live.

They rolling out a Moto Droid killer?
I’m not thrilled with the Droid’s feel and design, but if this phone is as reported, it lacks everything the Droid lacks *cough* native multitouch *cough* and without the D-pad and keyboard, it’ll take away the Droid’s ability to be a good emulator. If you want a touchscreen only phone and hate hard QWERTY’s it may be what you’re looking for, but the Droid technically does all this phone will do and more.

You have to realize now that the reason for Android’s lake of Multitouch in the US is… wait for it… APPLE.
Its obvious that the capabilities are there and Google is not stupid. They just know they would be really stepping on Apples feet and asking for a lawsuit.
Everyone else is doing it now. HTC, Palm, even Motorola put it on the Milestone. It’s becoming a lame excuse, even if it is true and I’m tired of it.
How in the hell is it a Droid killer? Just load up 2.1 on the Droid and they are pretty much the same in speed. And the OLED compared to the Droid’s screen? Well, not much of a huge difference. Besides, this phone doesn’t sport Gorilla Glass or top-notch solid hardware, does it? And for the last time, IT IS NOT THE GOOGLE PHONE.

Yeah, T-Mobile doesn’t have very many customers. There’s only 33 million of us… Isn’t this thing Unlocked and rumored to be $ 200 with 1GHz Snapdragon, 3.7″ OLED screen, 512MB ROM/RAM, 5MP Camera. Yep, definitely won’t be selling very many of these…

How can a phone truly be “unlocked” if it only works on one provider?
Also unlocked = unsubsidized so I wouldn’t hold your breath on that $200 price tag….. but who knows, it’s all rumor at this point right?
Um, it’s SIM unlocked. i.e. if you have a SIM card, it will work on the GSM carrier of your choice. Thus unlocked. 3G? No, but that’s a whole other discussion.
If the HTC Hero in Europe costs like $600, what makes you think this is going to a measly $200? If they sold it at that price, they would be losing A LOT of money. Do you know how much OLED and Snapdragon cost? I doubt this would be less than $750 unlocked.
Let me say this again. The “RUMORED” price point is $ 199. Look at it a few different ways.
1) Let’s take a similar device for comparison. iPhone 3GS costs around $ 179 to build. Take out the 32GB flash memory, add in Snapdragon and OLED, your probably looking around $ 250 – $ 300 cost.
2) The Hero is $ 600 because HTC sells it to the vendors who sell it to you. Each middleman along the way needs to make a profit. That’s how businesses work. With the Nexus One. there is HTC and Google. That’s it.
3) Google isn’t selling this device to make money on it. They are selling it to help Android gain market share. That’s where everyone gets confused. They are about open source applications and information. That’s what Android stands for. Google may lose money on the initial transaction but you’ll be entrenched in everything Google has to offer (Gmail, Goggles, Blogspot) all have impressions from AdSense revenue and that’s where they make their money.
4) If this phone is more then $ 399. I will buy it for you. If it comes in at $ 750, this thing will fail like none other. We’ll see in 7 days.
Stee, one of the benefits of google selling the phone is that it will not require a data plan as carriers do with their android/iphones. One can register the device over wifi, thus, the phone can be used on att or tmobile. it is the 3g aspect that seems to be tmob only.

Leaked info from Google employees has been indicating that this phone will still require both voice and data plan.

before the G1 TMO had a huge gap on decent phones which made me leave. I was tired of my BB Pearl & Curve at the time…

yeah. Next thing you know, HTC decides to release passion/dragon (or whatever) with android 2.1 + SenseUI with HD2 specs and this thing will become another DROID (which I happen to love)

People need to stop talking shit about carriers they never had. When I had T-mobile they were fine for me.
T-mobile has always been good for me they never dropped calls and now they are upping their 3g.

I think you have it wrong; due to the draconian ‘approval’ process over at Apple, many developers are leaving for greener pastures.
The iTunes app store has a 2 year head-start on Google- and there are estimates the Google marketplace will be up to 150,000 apps by end of 2010.

I have an iPhone 3GS and a Verizon Droid (and a T-Mobile G1 before that); I use the Droid for 80% of my daily stuff- I use the 3GS for games and for an app for my security cameras.
the iPhone is good if you are an bungling idiot that doesn’t know how to use a computer.
