Bell to launch Nokia N97 on the 10th

n97

In recent years, Canada’s Bell has done a good job of transforming its image of a boring carrier with humdrum handsets to a fiercely competitive purveyor of cutting-edge smartphones such as the Bold 9700, iPhone 3GS, Omnia II and Palm Pre. And as we mentioned last week, this Thursday will see the carrier release its first Android handset in the Samsung Galaxy. But that’s not the only first that will occur that day as the folks over at MobileSyrup have it on good authority that Nokia’s flagship N97 will also see its North American carrier debut on the very same day. As with the Galaxy, the handsets subsidized and unsubsidized price has yet to leak out, but we can’t imagine it would go for anything more than $249.95 on a 3-year contract.

Rogers just didn’t bother because iPhone is selling so well. There were plenty of good Nokia phone beside the N95.

Now that we have 3 UMTS carriers, it makes sense for them to get different phones to cater to consumer demand.

Wouldn’t “recent months” be more appropriate than years, dealing with the fact that you’re using quite recent handsets as examples?

So is this about the dated N97 or the new Nokia flagship, the N900 (pictured)

I don’t know about you, but that’s a picture of the N97 I see. Rogers/Bell/Telus won’t launch an N900 until there is a version that works on their 3G frequencies. So the only way you will see a carrier sell an N900 until then is if one of the AWS entrants sells one (WIND/DAVE/Videotron)

I love the N97. When I saw this I think I wet myself. I was hoping Rogers would get it so I wouldn’t have to break my contract….

Here’s a dumb and naive question: Why aren’t we seeing these Nokia’s subsizdized on U.S. carriers? I love Nokia, but haven’t had one in a long while now because it seems like all we get are the low-end clamshell crap. I would pick up an N97 or N900 over any Android handset for sure.

Thankfully we finally have an opportunity to get this handset. Eager to see the N900 on this side of the 49th. Guess we will have to wait. Happy that big red finally has some real competition. Too bad that all 3 carriers are in the same boat (collusion) when It comes to wireless Data rates.
