DROID to get an OTA update in the “coming weeks”

DroidLarge

Alongside today’s release of Android SDK 2.0.1, Verizon Wireless has announced that an OTA update for the Motorola DROID will be available “within the coming weeks.” What’s in line to be fixed? Voice reception and the 5 megapixel camera’s nearly legendary inability to focus on subjects, amongst other things. In case you glossed over the snippet of a quote above, we still don’t have an availability date, but the last time we took a look at the ol’ rumor mill it appeared December 11th was the special day. So sit back, relax by the fire with some egg nog and keep while we keep on the lookout for the first signs of release. We promise we’ll let you know.

What is the problem that you are having?

The only problem im having is that it doesnt keep names on the tabs.

      not a problem really though.

Well that too, but also, when I open a new tab, it doesn’t show the new tab until you click close on the original open tab. A workaround is going to the windows screen to switch. However, I thought if I opened a new tab, it should be the first tab displayed and I shouldn’t have to close the original tab I had open in order to get to it via tab view. Anyone else experience this?

Have you tried to uninstall and install again?

Also, are you using the Dolphin browser(new)?

I cant say i have had that problem though sorry

You know you can swipe between tabbed pages right? Just do a hard swipe left or right (depending on which tab you want to go to). Don’t know if that’ll help you.

The camera hasn’t been updated yet. There is a software glitch… in the date stamp there’s a rounding error, so every 24.5 days, the entire system gets mucked up, then it works for 24.5 days, then it’s broken for 24.5 days, etc etc etc. The update on Dec 11th will fix that amongst other things.

Is multitouch really that big a deal? I actually like the double tap browsing experience. I agree pinching photos is cool but really not a necessary feature. I’d like to see Google focus on some higher priority bugs right now.

Voice Dialing over Bluetooth being one of those “high priority” issues. That’s a huge deal breaker for me, and many others here, I would assume. They would benefit greatly by fixing/adding this to the current handset, rather than rolling out the change on a future Droid(2).

I really like double tap as well. I tried dolphin for the pinch experience, which is nice, but I keep finding myself trying to double click zoom now because it is very efficient.

I agree. Pinching photos, or hell…how about just being able to swipe between them for starters (my Dare could do that). Aside from that, I don’t think I am missing anything with the Pinch/Zoom. BT Voice dialing might be a while….:( (which imho, is LAME)

Pinch-Zoom is always a highly requested gesture, but the one that I would appreciate more is the “swipe to the side” to advance through a gallery. I find it to be a pain to have to tap to get the arrow on the side to advance to the next picture.

Swipe to change pictures would be great.

But I would really love the Camera to just take pics faster. Its is how I say Terribly slow.

What does fixing “voice reception” mean?

    Incoming reception in the earpiece?
Or outgoing voice through the microphone?

I’ve had so much frustration with callers telling me I sound muffled and “digital” sounding. Finally got it somewhat fixed with the Voice Encoder Protocol (##PROGRAM) hack I found online. Hope this OTA update will make it an official fix and people can hear me clearly and unmuffled.

Here’s a unique problem I have discovered. When I purchased my DROID I had Verizon transfer all of my address’s from my BlackBerry to my DROID. All went well except that the format of the two phones was different. In otherwords the Given Name was now the Family Name and visaversa. Still not a real big deal. I could still use the speech function to find a name and dial. Well, perfectionist as I am I spent two days correcting the name fields just to get it right and guess what happened. Now when I use the speech to locate a name, the name comes up but it says under the name to “Add number”? If you press the name it says “The contact does not exist”. But if you manually go to the contact list, the contact is there and works just fine????

Mike, welcome to the joys of proprietary, file formats. Each manufacturer expects imported data to be provided in an order particular to their phone, OS, or application. If you have access to the file containing exported contacts, you can experiment with the order in which the data appear.

the iphone is nothing more than a very nice touchscreen ipod that occasionally makes phone calls, and even when it occasionally connects it usually drops the call. Ill take the droid and not have to worry about finding a WIFI connection and a payphone.
