Apple iPhone 3G and 3GS to be sold by UK retailer Tesco

iPhone_3GS

The iPhone went a little bit more mainstream today as Tesco, the UK’s version of Walmart, announced that it will be adding both the iPhone 3G and the 3GS to its mobile phone lineup. Both versions of the iPhone will be available for purchase in Tesco’s in-store mobile phone shops and online through Tesco Direct. Similar to Tesco’s other mobile offerings, the iPhone will run on O2’s cellular network and will presumably be sold with Tesco’s cut-throat pricing plans. Holiday shoppers can rejoice as the popular Apple smartphone is expected to be available just in time for the holiday shopping season.

So I suppose that leaked Rogers email about a $99 iphone 3gs was a complete farce as it seems Apple has no plans to retire the 3g just yet

Tescos is NOT UK’s version of Walmart. ASDA is UK’s version of Walmart as it is owned by them and pretty much uses the same fonts etc.

Tesco is a large supermarket chain. It does sell some white goods but nowhere near the same range as Walmart does.

I’m in two minds about this deal, on one hand I’d like to pay less for my business iPhone account (although the O2 service is very good – phoned up with a dead wifi on my phone on monday 4pm – courier picked up and dropped off a new one 8am following morning).

Tesco WILL reduce prices compared to the other operators because that is their core brand value – pay less. BUT this really does give Tesco even more market power and as a brit they scare me a bit. Tesco are a monster that just keeps growing (and the people who shop in their stores are chavs).

Tesco is our Walmart – Asda is owned by Walmart but that’s where the similarity ends – Tesco want to be another walmart which is why they have already expanded into the east coast of the states and across europe.
