Verizon cuts ex-Alltel employees, offers small consolation

It looks like Verizon has finally figured out what it’s going to do with the Alltel employees that it picked up during its acquisition of the company: give them the axe. More specifically, Verizon is cutting an unspecified number of jobs in Little Rock because those corporate positions are now redundant. The departments being given the axe include finance, marketing and legal, but there is some hope for those losing their jobs — Verizon would be more than happy to have them apply for positions in its call centers. We’re not sure if being asked to step down from finance to handle customer complaints over the phone is a nice offer, but having a job is better than no job, right?

I worked for a little company called Midwest Wireless we only had 440K subscribers when we got bought by Alltel in 2007. The very people that are getting the boot now in Little Rock decided to fire and lay off a bunch of my coworkers in Mankato. I guess what goes around comes around. Makes you wonder if it ever crossed their minds when they gave all these people the boot.

Right because people that aren’t needed should be paid to sit on lunch break all day, see: GM.

They are clearly offering the call center jobs to make the employees ineligible for unemployment. In most states, refusing an offer of work (any work) makes the employee ineligible for unemployment benefits.

Uhhh… actually they have to “interview” for the positions. If they reject the interview they are still eligible for unemployment…

I believe the salary for the new position has to be comparable to that of the old for it to disqualify one for unemployment, but it may vary by state.

There is a much larger cause here — If the federal gub-mint wasn’t so busy destroying the US economy, then there wouldn’t be so many job losses in this as well as other industries across the board.

It sucks I agree but if the company decided they had to let these people go isnt ANY job better than no job in your economy? If you are great at your job you can make it back to where you want to be within the same organization

I’m sure they could of been offered better positions than that, Verizon is freakin huge. Find them an equivalent position in there DSL, home phone, fios department. Best of luck to those employees

Verizon Wireless doesn’t have a DSL, home phone or fios department. That Verizon Communications, and I assure you that while they are related they do not share a bank account.

Anyone who is still in those redundant positions should have know it was going to happen the day it was sold. And Verizon is not to blame, it’s greedy shareholders that are the cause of it.

Verizon Wireless is privately held, therefore there are no shareholders. It’s a business and had to make a business decision. It’s how this country works.

@Verizon is fallen…… We will have the iPhone so @#$% you. Even if it stays with At&t (which it won’t) (considering Apple is suing At&t for network outages from the phone) both companies will be on LTE by 2013. (Verizon starting next year….At&t in 2013) Lets look at this realistically shall we? 90 Million customers that not one has a iPhone or a company with a shitty network that their best claims to Verizon saying your “hey your 3g coverage blows” is “well, we can make voice and data work at the same time….. REALLY??? because most people I know use both at the same time….lol

I mean really…. the next thing I expect them to say is “well my dad can beat up your dad” Give me a break and using Luke Wilson? Seriously…. a washed up actor that his greatest claim to fame is he is Owen Wilson’s brother. Wow that hurts At&t…… it cuts deep.

People atleast read about LTE/Verizon before being fanboys of BIG RED. Get to know the facts of cellular technology before ASSuming to know the ins and outs of everything. There are reasons for the whys and whats. Try to look intelligent if you cant be knowledgable.
