TELUS releases the BlackBerry Storm2

telus-storm2

Just a quick  little heads up for our Canadians brothers and sisters that at this moment may or may not be doing battle with polar bears on glaciers the size of Manhattan — TELUS has released the BlackBerry Storm2. Retailing for $599.99, the Storm2 is also available at the subsidized price of $199.99 provided one is willing to take on a 3-year contract with a minimum of a $50 voice and data plan. So what’s it going to be, Canada? Yay or nay?

3-year contract? That’s a rather long-term commitment. Telus better include maid services for your domicile in exchange for a 3-year commitment.

The Storm 2 will be a tough sell. When you walk into a Telus store you have a choice between:

    1. Bold 9700
    2. Storm 2
    3. iPhone 3G / 3GS
    4. HTC Magic
    5. Motorola Milestone (aka DROID with multi-touch) (Q1 2010)
    6. Palm Pre and Pixi (Q1 2010)
    7. LG LB40
    8. Nokia E71

Is there any other carrier in the world with this selection of highly sought-after smart phones from 1 carrier?

Actually they sell the GSM HTC Hero the one with the Leno Chin. Not the Magic. But the Magic is just about the same hardware.

BTW. I’m a Storm 1 user and LOVE IT after the 5.0 OS upgrade. I use it more than my iPhone.

Why would any one ever sign a 3 year contract. I don’t even sign a 2 year contract. I always go with a one year deal.

    @ Anthony,
Have you tried the phone, or are you just a hater bc VZW wouldn’t give you a contract and mommy and daddy said they wouldn’t sign one for you?
    @ Apple,
    Your name says it all.

Storm 2 is actually way better than the original. I have had to deal with a few of the originals in my office and am now suggesting the 3 individuals here that have them upgrade to the storm 2. Faster transitions, and the typing is about 100X better, still not perfect, but since they didn’t want tours this is the next best thing for them (they don’t want to give up the larger screen)

Storm2 I heard will not support HSPA. Just CDMA. My question then becomes –what’s the point of getting it?

I tried the Droid when I was in the States last week and it is awesome. If you say it sucks your pretty much just an apple fanboy nervous that there’s another device that can compete with your precious iphone. Anyways, can’t wait for this bad boy to make the journey north!

do NOT be fooled by this. It runs on crappy CDMA…not on the new HSPA network.

imaginary kings with imaginary kingdoms. no one cares about you triumphs or misfortunes. This is a tech oriented forum. be the dignified ‘bigger man’ and let ‘peasants’ rant about mommy and daddy.

back on topic. 3 yr contract sounds like a no go…kinda ridiculous actually… n900 anyone?

It has a SIM card, but will only work on EDGE network, as the HSPA band is only for Europe.

    Tyrone says:

I live in Toronto and it does suck that all the deals are 3 year contracts. The reason is simple. There is no competition in Canada. 90% of the celluar phone market is shared between Rogers, Bell and Telus (Bell owns Telus by the way). And they literally do not compete price-wise with one another. I’ve got the Storm 1 and was thinking about upgrading but when I found out there was no HSPA on the Storm 2 I figure its better to wait until better phones come out. A friend of mine works at Telus and says HSPA is not even working correctly right now and its better to wait until the problems are sorted out.
