I’m sure Android has many uses for others, but for those of us in the medical field there still is no Epocrates, Medscape or similar strong medical software that many med students, residents and attendings have come to rely on instead of pocket book guides. Going into a lecture hall or morning report you’ll see iPhones in every row because of programs like these on the OS. For basic users like myself programs and utility trump technical details and while the iPhone may not satisfy on that front, it certainly has the market on multitude of apps and simplicity. I’m still waiting for that along with many others from Android.

X10 has many shortcomings compared to Droid
1)No Flash,so no camera/video capture at night
2)Android 1.6 vs Droid has Android 2.0
3)No Ambient Light sensor( Display brightness automatically adjusts as per the outside light – dark vs bright )
4)No Voice activated google maps navigation
5)Display /Video capture for X10 is at lower resolution then Droid
6)Biggest of all: No physical keypad
7)Price for X10 is more then four times of Droid
8)Comes with only 8GB transflash vs Droids 16GB transflash card

The problem with most of these new phones is the software. They make the interfaces so fancy (eye candy) at the expense of speed and performance.

A case in point is the new HTC Touch Pro 2 (TP2) I just bought with WM6.5. Opening contacts or browsing is slower than on my old HTC Kaiser. After tyring several WM6.5 ROMS, I flashed a WM6.1 ROM. The older WM6.1 is faster and more stable.

I don’ think these company’s understand how important speed is. When we click on something, the device needs to respond instantly.

@Sean: (Jailborken) iPhone can and does run applications in background. Not just the music app but any app for that instance. Backgrounder is an amazing app from Cydia library.

But iPhone OS is not meant to take all that pressure (lol) but Steve Jobs should really think about this

Curious to see how fast the phone would be if one turned off Sony’s UX. I imagine it would be right up there with the iphone with the advantage of running apps in the back ground.

first time to see Sony-ericcson all “balls-deep” on a new smartphone in particular an android phone. We agree, that Xperia has a bitter history on older models. Hopefully, this X10 release will turned out to be a happy-ending.

Wow.. that was some serious lag in the video. When he clicked on contacts it took nearly 10 seconds load them; Sorry Sony, I won’t wait 10 seconds to get into my contacts. I just don’t understand how these companies can release products like that! If your UI is laggy as hell, get rid of it, I don’t care how good it looks. First: Function Second: Fashion.

Currently I’m running winMo and it’s just bloody terribly slow, and I need something speedy! Please! Someone figure it out!

Xperia X1 and X2 caught my attention since day 1 but they weren’t ‘that’ exceptional as compared to competitor handsets. Three months for X10’s launch, hope they use 1Ghz processing power to the Max.

We need similar or better version of DROID on GSM network. Else, Moto should make DROID world phone GSM+CDMA like Storm

Tried out and returned the xperia1, loved the form factor, great build but hated the OS, lagged, small icons and needed the stylus a lot. I had to whip out my reading glasses a lot too. I did like the customizable panels though. I think they are going in the right direction with the Android OS, but still so freakin expensive and you don’t get what you pay for.

Hope this comes with 850/1900 3G bands. Then it can run on Rogers/Fido/Telus/Bell in Canada and AT&T in the US.

Better yet make it 850/1700/1900/2100 HSPA so it will work on all the North American HSPA carriers!! That would make a lot of people happy.

I wonder who in Canada, if anyone, will pick the up? Telus is getting the Motorola Milestone (GSM/HSPA version of Droid), so doubt they’d get it? Bell? Rogers? (I’d rather wait for the HTC Dragon myself).

The droid is the biggest piece of junk I have ever laid my eyes on. Its ugly. The keyboard is junk. The camera is crap. It can only be used in the US. The list goes on. The new blackberry bold 9700 is sooooooo much better. As well as the iPhone and N900 and soon the X10.

If this is a non-retail unit, is it likely that the lag will be dealt with by the time of release? I’m interested in either this or the DROID-it rather depends which hits the UK first.

And please, why does liking one phone mean you have to attack others? I have an iPhone, which I love and wouldn’t be without, but I want to try Android too. Surely both have strengths and weaknesses, and liking one doesn’t mean I have to hate the other.

Looking forward to more information on this handset. I know this site focusses on the USA, but could we get some UK launch information please?

8.1MP is cool and all.. but how can we know the sensor size? If its just dividing up the same tiny ass sensor in to finer pixels may as well make it a 2mp – at least it’d have better low-light performance. KEYBOARD SONY! You won’t have to fire as many employees!

With Android 1.5, this phone is a little too late. Even HTC Hero appears to be much better than this. I was really looking forward to this phone, but couldn’t wait and got Droid instead, which now I think was a good decision.
