Vodafone UK now serving up the HTC HD2

vodafone-uk-htc-hd2

We hate to tease our American readers who are holding their breath until it arrives on American shores, but Vodafone UK has begun selling the HTC HD2. Free on all tariffs over £35 on a 24 month contract or free on all tariffs over £40 on an 18 month contract, the HTC HD2 is a monster of a smartphone with a 1GHz Snapdragon processor and 4.3″ WVGA capacitive touchscreen display. Plus most users will hardly realize that the HD2 is running Windows Mobile 6.5 thanks in part to HTC’s Sense UI. Just watch out for a sharp bezel around the 5 megapixel camera. It scratched the hell out of our desk.

I like how in Europe the price is free for phones when you sign the contract. Plus it seems like be just a bit cheaper for monthly service. Here you still drop plenty for the phone and then get completely bent over on the monthly charge.

Inexplicably I can’t help feel that the word “tariffs” somehow makes paying a bill more pleasant.

Holy Smokes, Just checked the plan on Vodafone in the UK. Were getting ripped off here in the US.
On their 24 month contract you get a free bad ass phone plus for 35 Pounds you get 900 minutes, unlimited Txt, Unlimited calls to Landlines, and Unlimited Web. For 5#’s more you get 1200 minutes.

The UK is about the size of what… Nevada maybe? They’ve long ago paid off building a cellular infrastructure and the carriers didn’t have to spend BILLIONS at auctions to purchase spectrum.

Um, the UK 3G auction for 2100MHz back in 2000 set the cell phone companies back $35 billion.

I think the real problem is that the US companies are a bunch of over-coddled Baby Bell descendants who get a free pass from regulators and customers — and yet still manage to get themselves massively in debt.

Hmm, did you say 2000? that’s nearly a decade ago… to build out a 3G network in the UK an aread the size of… well you get it.

You think that you want, but at some point reality makes you have to factor in economies of scale. We pay less for “petrol” than the UK, is that because the American oil companies are so heavily controlled by regulators and don’t get free passes from customers?

BigBoy, One additional point to consider when comparing phone plans in the US to europe, here in europe we only get charged for the calls and txts we make, receiving a call or txt does not cost us. So that 900 minutes is only for outgoing calls.

Yeah. We absolutely get A*# Rammed. American companies appear to be a bit more greedy for cell services.

So why is it that we pay so much for phones that the UK gets for free?

    I feel ripped off.

We are getting ripped off. If you make a call, both parties get charged! Also $.25 for a text message?? Unless there is some threat of legislation, we will continue to get ripped off.

Guys…the UK is a small fraction of the size of the US. It is VERY EASY by comparison to build out a wireless network there. It won’t take 5-10 years to establish a large national footprint, so this allows tons of competition. Not to mention overhead is nothing in the UK like it is here because wireless networks are almost completely built out there. Here, there are areas that don’t have ANY coverage yet that add up to the size of the UK. The US cellular network is very immature compared to the UK’s because of size and environment restrictions. Our overhead is billions more than theirs, so obviously our wireless providers charge more!

This phone is awesome! I hope one of the carriers in Canada get this phone so I can bring it to AT&T. I know tmobile is getting it but it won’t work on AT&Ts 3G. Why doesn’t the US have a standard frequency for all carriers it’s stupid to have so many different frequencies the phones are never compatible!
