Motorola DROID accounts for around 25% of all U.S. Android web traffic?

droid-traffic

Well, kind of. Our boys at Clicky (awesome site analytics service, by the way) released a report this morning compiled of data from over 150,000 websites which have their tracking code installed. It’s a pretty large sample size, and what they found was that the DROID, less than a week old, already accounts for around 25% of all Android traffic they see in the United States. We’ll let you guys tear this apart in the comments…

Thanks, Sean!

I made the switch…moved from T-Mobile and bought the Droid. To all the haters sitting on the T-Mobile network….stop being haters. No doubt, T-Mo has the most affordable plans but lack gusto in the handset department. C’mon ya’ll….admit it. T-Mobile’s stable of phones are straight gar’bage. You get what you pay for. I got love for the camp over at T-Mo but they’ve been half-ass’n it for a couple years now. The Q3 losses they suffered are an indication that subscribers have become tired of hoping and praying T-Mobile will deliver on promises.

The last one to the 3G data game because they assumed data plans were insignificant to their revenue stream. The last carrier to release at least one touchscreen phone (G1) and the last to get a 3G Blackberry which has been delayed at least twice.
There’s not enough space for me to comment on their stupidity.

    Back to the subject….the Droid.

Not the iPhone killer and I wouldn’t expect it to be as so many people place it in that category. No one has made a phone quite like the iPhone but I’m sure the day is coming so be ready for it. What you can expect the Droid to be is an equalizer, showing off the maturity and potential of the Android platform with the right hardware. This is the area T-Mobile fell flat on their faces, show off Android on sub par hardware. My only complaint about the phone is the keyboard. There’s no way the phone could be functional without the aid of the touchscreen. The option pad is a big waste and should have been ditched to give way to having a larger keyboard. I’m sure Motorola is taking notes.

I’ve owned the droid since launch day and haven’t had any problems with the keyboard. everyone keeps bashing it but I don’t think it’s that bad. Yeah, it could be be better, but it’s completely usable IMHO.

Did some research. As of June 2009 there were 276.6 mil wireless subscribers:

    http://www.ctia.org/consumer_info/index.cfm/AID/10323

Of that number, approx. 15% are smartphones or 41.49 mil as of July 2009. Which would mean that 1.49% mobile web use by Droids would equal 618,201 subscribers or Droids purchased. Um, and according to clicky.com which updates every half hour that percentage is growing by leaps. It’s now over 2%!!!

Somebody point out something wrong with logic. This just seems incredible.

That would be assuming users of every type of phone visited the same amount of websites (obviously incorrect). Users of a Droid or iPhone are more likely to browse the web because of a better experience. Also all the Droid users just purchased their phone so are probably browsing more than normal to see how it works.

      • SharonW says:

Not the way I understand how the stats are gathered. They take a compilation of OS user types from 150,000 different websites and then I would assume average it out to come up with total traffic share per OS. So if one site gets more traffic from one type of OS, it doesn’t matter because it’s averaged out among 150k different sites.

        Thumb up Thumb down 0

        • Sean says:

It’s not averaged. Every visit to any web site we monitor from a mobile phone is analyzed and we are summing up the grand total values for iphone, android, droid, and “everything else”. Then dividing each of those values by the grand total value of all combined.

What playsted said is true. This is not total marketshare “period”. This is marketshare of people who are actually using their phone to browse the web. Many people owns phones that are either not capable of web browsing, or they are but they don’t really use that feature. What our report is saying is that, of all the mobile internet traffic that we are seeing across 150,000 sites, 1.5% of it today has been from the Droid. (And it’s actually increased to 2% as the day has gone on).

          • SharonW says:

I appreciation the clarification even though I still find it confusing. While I realize that not all smart phones go on the web, it is difficult to imagine that anyone buys either an iPhone or a Droid and does not go on the web. So where would one put those numbers of stupid people over-paying for a phone they don’t use for it’s intended purpose percentage wise? :D I’d hope it was dismally low.

Also, is not adding up the total number of types of visits (browser type) per each website and then dividing it by the whole of website visits to all 150,000 not an average though? And wouldn’t the ratios of numbers of iPhone/iPod visits be very relative to the number of iPhone/iPod’s sold and thus the same for the Droid…ratio wise.

Therefore, it would seem to me that SOME sort of reasonable extrapolation could be made to number of handsets being used.

Ok, let’s try and actually read the article… it is 25% of Android based web traffic was from Droids! Not 25% of all smartphone users! 6.33% of all smartphone web access was from android devices and 25% of that or ~1.5% of overall smartphone web access was from Droids.

      • Tom says:

Correct me if I’m wrong, but while the logic may indeed be wrong, the math is correct. In calculating the 618k subscribers as 276.6m * 15% smartphones * 1.49% droid users, there’s no operation involving 25% of all smartphone users. The 1.49% is approximately 25% of the 6.33% total Android usage, but this step is obviously unnecessary.

I think the Droid is really going to make Android very popular, and very profitable. Apple’s App store has soooo much to choose from, but it’s very over saturated. The Android App store is really on the ground floor, and developers would be wise to shift their attention to it, before it really takes off.

…Hey man, i just got the droid, and i think its superior, my friend is an iphone bitch, he talks about everything it does, but when i showed him my droid, he was stunned, he said nice phone, and i said idon’t take comments, haaaa he had to laugh hiself, but it really depends on what your using your phone for, because the bottom line is you want to be able to answer and receive calls, i think we forgot what there called, (mobile phones) hello, and the verizon kicks at&t ass down here in Louisiana, and far as comparison, iphone=kids, droid=men, go play games with you iphone while i check my email with droid

I’m really starting to wish people would stop trying to compare the Moto Droid to the iphone. The droid has enough merit to stand on it’s own to not have to be compared to that over hyped hunk of apple.

The droid is a great phone, with a very well working OS. It does so much more then any phone out there. If you want an iphone, get an iphone. If your on verizon or want something different then get a droid, you won’t be dissapointed. I cam from using Samsung and mutlpile BB, and Palm’s. This droid is EASILY the best phone i’ve ever owned. It does everything i could hope for and then some.

remember who started to compare the droid to the iphone. Verizon/Motorola started first with the idon’t commercials, so its only fair that after the phone is out we compare it side to side since that was Verizon’s original intent.

I personally think that Moto/Verizon were wrong in comparing the Droid to the Iphone, but they chose to do that.

You must be in a great ATT coverage area!

I had an iphone for 3 years since it came out, I jailbroke my all of my iphones within that time (2g,3g,3gs) I loved the phone jailbroken, I hate the ATT Network!!

November 6th i purchased the Droid and have not looked backed ever since!!
Its true iT DOES!! Really if you dont want any restrictions this is the phone i can make it my own and still sync all my mail, yes it does not have a few functionalities that the iPhone did have but the overall performance of the phone, the Network truly out weigh some of its current flaws, ( which will be corrected)

The potential is there, just wait and see.

Ive had the droid for a week now and I love it. It is an amazing phone with amazing features. Me and my boys with Iphones have been comparing all week and they are just about equal. Iphone has a lot of useless apps that havent been created on the droid yet. As far as useful apps the android market place has the same as the app store. And the screen and resolution on the droid is amazing. Anyone who puts a hand on the droid will fall in love cant beat a great touch screen smart phone with a full qwerty keyboard. good bye Iphone

Hi kids, Just wanted to say I have had my droid for about a week now, and I don’t give a shit how “pretty” it is. The screen resolution makes up for it, as do all the wonderful free applications I have already downloaded. I love this phone, and I am rather picky. The on-screen keyboard is spectacular, and the auto-correct function definitley helps out. The slide out isn’t as bad as everyone says, as I average around 10 to 15 SMS per minute (multiple convos plus a rather boring desk job) and I have not been the least bit inhibited.

VZW will sell more of these as word spreads and people get their hands on them.

The Droid has been walking out the door 6 to 1 on the Eris (htc) and I would know, I do inventory control for VZW.

Expect the Android web traffic to move further and further in the Droid direction until another Eclair device launches.
