HTC HD2 hands on

HTC-HD2-1

HTC was nice enough to hook us up with an HD2 unit a couple of days ago, and we just have to get this out of the way… Wow. This is really Windows Mobile? From the gorgeous 4.3″ capacitive touch display to HTC’s Sense UI, it’s really an amazing handset. The display and HTC’s UI compliment Windows Mobile 6.5’s icon set and honestly, it’s almost usable. Almost. The only thing off the bat we’re not feeling is the viciously sharp bezel around the camera lens. It scratched our desk. We’ll report back with a detailed overview in a bit, but in the meantime, check out some photos after the break!

WM is sooooooo yesterday. I’ve owned to WM devices and now got the Droid. There’s a 1% chance I’ll go back to WM no scratch that 0% chance. Android- jump on the band wagon.

Really? I’ve been using WM for about a year and a half and just switched over to the Droid and I’m debating on whether or not to keep it. Granted the older, more crippled VZW WM devices like my XV6800 needed rebooting and whatnot and had their glitches, a friend of mine now has the TP2 and says it rarely needs reboots. I’ve just noticed a few things about the Android system that bother me, but that’s just me and maybe they don’t bother other people.

      For example:

-You can’t adjust the alarm snooze time in Android.
-You can’t adjust how your contacts are displayed (I’m used to last name first).
-The phone doesn’t activate if you get a text, only a very small LED lights up that’s barely noticeable.
-I actually like having a stylus for certain things, like making lists in the notes app for grocery shopping or something like that.
-The camera app is annoying and doesn’t allow for easy adjustments without opening the slide out menu(it’s also very slow).
-Maybe I’m just missing something here, but I can’t figure out how to set my own mp3’s as ringtones like WM can.

Like I said, maybe these things only bother me, but I thought I would throw it out there anyway. These small things coupled with the Droid’s poorly designed physical keyboard are making me consider returning it and either getting a TP2 or waiting for something else. The HD2 looks amazing, but I’m not sure how happy I’ll be without a physical keyboard……

      Never happy I suppose. Haha.

        alarm clock–>menu button–>settings–>snooze duration…

hook up ur phone to the computer, create a “ringtones” folder on the sd card, drag and drop, then set the ringtone like normal

with that said, i love the droid, but if the htc passion with android is confirmed to come out soon, i’m gonna have a touch decision to make..

No need to even create a separate folder and have to take up extra room on your SD card.

Just open up the music player, find the song you want as a ringtone in your playlist . Long press on it (tap on the song and hold your finger there for a second or two) and a menu should pop up. Select “use as phone ringtone” and you’re good to go.

I own a Sprint HTC Hero and yes, we can have an SMS activate the screen and even reply directly from the message popup, we can use a capacitive stylus (check the web), we can use a quick camera app, we can very easily set any mp3 as a ringtone. Since the Motorola Droid is also an Android device, these things must also work for it as well without much adjustments, check your settings and read the manual to figure out how to adjust any other easily accessible settings.

Sorry, but the Droid will not activate on getting a SMS, it rings and a puny LED lights up in the corner, thats it.

Actually go to your messages, click menu. settings. scroll down and check the vibrate. (you can also customize your sounds).

media player>long press on song you want for ringtone>scroll down> choose set as ringtone

also there is a cool app called ringdroid that lets you edit the mp3 before you set it as ringtone

a reply with confirmation of if this worked would be welcome.

Also, it makes a noise when you get a text. You can also set it to vibrate when you get one. You can change notification in both settings.

Be glad that the screen is capacitive, but get a pogo stylus if you really want a capacitive stylus

Who cares about arrangement of contacts?

Yes the camera doesn’t work that well but that may be updated later for software.

There is nothing wrong with this phone…OS or not..every phone has its flaws, that people will whine about…HTC has really out did themselves on this device, and shown that even WinMo can be tweaked and tweaked again for optimal performance…they def have come along way with this one…I currently utilize the Bold 9000, and have my complaints also, but I wouldnt think twice, about going a few rounds with this bad boy:pp bottom line….this phone will do pretty much anything you want it to, and look good doing it…hands down….bar none.

How hard can it be to smooth out the sharp edges of the bezel. All the complaining you would think these new phones cost thousands of dollars and require a 10 year commitment. They are cheap devices that we carry for like a year and then replace. Just buy the one you like best when you need a new phone and stop all the bitch’n. There will always be a better one coming out before you have even learned how to fully operate the one you have.

    @puzzlepusher,

you do realize that was done before. the wild west of Windows Mobile. Get your apps from anyone, unchecked doesn’t work.

the iPhone is a success because it SIMPLIFYS the process. All of the process. So much so that Microsoft is trying to do the same.

And since when is 100,000 apps limiting. compare that to 10,000 apps and then think about what “limiting” is.

The only people that complain about the iPhone so called limits are G-E-E-K-S.

Not everybody are geeks. and I say again 100,000 apps that are reviewed not to be malicious and install with ease is a great enviroment to be in.

Oh by the way it is said that there will be 200,000 by next year. Sure am glad iTunes store has a useful search capability in it.

Just enjoy whatever you prefer and stop making predictions that are only applicable to Geeks.

You are exactly right on how much simpler the iPhone is. But I wouldn’t tout 100,000 apps when 90% of them are duplicates and replicas. When the iPhone stops dropping calls I “may” think about getting one. Until then my day one BB Storm is still a better PHONE.

by geek u must mean smart or capable of basic computer operation….im the type of person who is coming from the old days of DOS i’ll never understand why someone needs or would want windows 3.1 to open programs its b/c they dont know simple computer basics they need the idiot proof operating system to get them through functions for some of us that is a waste of precious resources better devoted to better performance for me a smartphone is a tool to b used at its maximum capability
iphone will always have a niche of hipster trendy entertainment devices they are great at simplifying everything idiot proofing it and making it fun thats where the $ is anyway getting u addicted making u need them to perform basic functions and thats perfectly fine for average users who never come close to their devices limits
we can all co-exist together the casual user and the hardcore dweeb isn’t this a geek site? its called boy genius
i want hardcore dweebs to give me the hardcore geek breakdown not the the marketplace is better so the os must b better casual breakdown u dont need a breakdown if ur a causal user just get an iphone

Once again….this phone will more then capable, of doing anything, and more then most of the whiners could ever imagine, or even have the time to do with this device. It will look just as good, if not better then any other device out there, while blasing of at speeds, quicker then my GN. Im talking about “whiplash” “neck breaking” speeds. I really think the app world things is overated anyway…when you start to get into the 5k plus available apps out there. I mean really now..there will be a cool/useful app that everyone will use, excluding ringtones and videos. I use my BB Bold, and there app store is no where near the size of the others, but who cares really, when most of the apps are useful and fun ones. I work close with iphone users all day long, and the whining still continues about there phones…they ask me if I like my BB, and which service I have..haha..no one person will ever be happy with what they have as a whole…food for thought..

MightyGN, you are making sense in a senseless world. Fact is whenever WM is mentioned some people start foaming at the mouth, baring their teeth and their eyes bulge as they convulse with rage that a phone is running that OS. No matter that no device stays on top forever the haters cannot stand to see WM on such a device.

So dont bother, anyone who is open minded enough to enjoy the phone will do so and the haters will be huddled in a corner crying over their spilt droids.

funny how alot of people will change there attitudes quick though, if they can swallow there pride long enough to do so…I think ive used every brand phone out there, at one point or another, and yep!! im open minded, and will try another…but yea….the haters will hate, no matter what phone, or OS…guess it all boils down to having too many choices, and too many opinions..word of mouth, and rumors give most anything a bad or good wrap, unless you have experienced for yourself:)

I will aggree on the experience of a phone being a necessity. What most people don’t understand is the last Windows OS based phone they had might have just been a junk phone or the Q :) (have to have a little hate) I have carried almost every phone VZW has to offer (perk of employee) and they all have quirks and drawbacks.

This phone looks amazing. I can’t wait to see it in shops and get a play. I came close to ordering this phone, instead went for the hero on a one year deal (so I may pick it up later) the phone looks top class and apple may have a serious contender for top crown. Interestingly, the hero is now have the smartphone of the year. I think the HD2 could be next years winner.

Like many, I’ll be interested to see how apple responds to the current market. Yes there are things that the iphone can do that others can’t however, HTC have shown their willingness to take apple on by creating their own multi touch. At the very least it will be an interesting battle for those who are interested, but not fanboys.

I hope the HD2 does well. It has everything it needs to be a success and hopefully will convince some fanboys to jump ship!

This HTC HD 2 looks great, but I just think these devices are going too far with regard to the size! Let’s not forget these are first and foremost, PHONES. I was considering getting the HTC Droid eris over the Motorola Droid just because the Droid eris is smaller. I decided that the Droid would be just barely small enough to be pocketable, so I ordered the Droid. I just can’t see carrying a larger phone than the Droid/iphone/Imagio/TP2.
