Apple tops Nokia in cell phone profits
Perhaps it would be better to rename it the iPhone 3G$? Do you see what we did just there? Today, Reuters is reporting Apple overtook Nokia as the handset company with the highest total operating profit in the September quarter; the last time Nokia did not hold this title was Q3 of 2007. What does this mean? The iPhone generates a lot of revenue for the Cupertino computer maker. Apple sold 7.4 million iPhones in the July to September quarter to generate sales of $4.5 billion, Nokia on the other hand sold 108.5 million handsets and generated sales of $10.36 billion. Apple nudged out Nokia in revenue mainly due to other financial obligations and the economic downturn. You don’t need an abacus to figure out the iPhone is a huge part of Apple’s earnings. No panic out of the Nokia camp however, with the release of the N900 they’re confident in their ability to take back the top spot on the podium. One thing is for certain, we’ll be purchasing several of these Linux powered, A8 processor havin’, numbers. How about you?

The n900 is a great device but it won’t do for Nokia what the iPhone did for Apple for one single reason: it’s too bulky. This kind of devices should be, above all, easy to carry and manipulate.
I agree on that one, the Iphone has the best design,sleek and sexy and with a simple interface for users. Its definitely not the most sophisticated in hardware except maybe on the the touch technology, but Itunes, and apps integrated seamlessly is a huge advantage. With Itunes and ipods at its peak, they design the Iphone with a huge marketing campaign. Its really hard to catch up to them. Like me, most folks that post here are techies and love high end phones. Thats why even with my 3gs, I still yearn for the N900 and wouldn’t mind the added bulk. Having said all of that, we are just a small minority of smart phone enthusiasts, with the majority opting for simplicity, quality, design, seamless access to apps and intuitiveness where you don’t have read a manual to operate the OS. With the advent of the Droid, Apple will of course up the ante for next year to stay on top. I like the N900 more than the Droid being a Nokia user for a long time, but it won’t be a threat to Apple here in the US. My biggest complain are the carriers anyway. We should adopt the way of the rest of the world in cell and data plan where you buy the phone and the data plans are separate, and can jump from one carrier to another. They do this in Asia a lot and they simply load the sim with a data/calls(talk and text). Kinda like a “pay as you go” deal. At least have that as an option here. Anyway, sorry for the long post, but its a good way to pass time when you wake up early and realize its your off work day.
@christexaport,
Hey thanks for the input, I knew you would know. I live outer suburb of Chicago and the coverage is good for Tmobile. Seems like they have plans for improving their network. I may go that route as long as it’s unlocked. Is there a site I can go to to see maemo apps?
Posted from BGR Mobile (iPhone).
You can look here for all Maemo apps that are listed in as final versions via the App Manager:
http://maemo.org/downloads/Maemo5/
You can select which version of Maemo you wish to search along the right side of the screen, since some older versions run on newer versions as well, so I hear.
You can also add the repositories for apps in the testing stage via the App Manager, which will show a lot more apps available. There is the default Extras repository, as well as the Extras-Testing and Extras-Devel repositories, which are unfinished applications that haven’t reached final release builds. You can test these apps and give input and report bugs to get it to its final build stages in the best state possible.
Apples WiFi is faster and smoother than any other that I’ve seen. I just wish I could get the IPhone in my area. I think that there is something that HAS to be against the FCC regulations regarding cell phone companies providing to what they consider “RURAL” areas. So, nokia gets us stuck out in the middle of nowhere, while us Mac/Apple users can’t even use the phone the fully integrates with our networks. I hate using a Windows based phone, the internet connections is slow and the apps basically suck because they are so slow and you don’t even get all the info on say a webpage.
AT&T an Apple need to find a way for WorldWide to actually be World Wide…
