Orange UK smashes single day sales record with the iPhone
Here’s a bit of an odd one. The iPhone has been on sale in the UK since November 2007 when O2 began exclusively offering the original iPhone. But it was only today the record for single day sales for a sole handset was shattered as Orange began selling the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS. The specific number sold has yet to come out as the day is not yet done, but as of 4pm local time, nationwide sales surpassed 30,000 units. Why is this? Orange thinks it is all to do with its network which it says offers far greater coverage and reach than its competitors and is the focus of a new multi-million pound ad campaign entitled “You’re Covered,” as well as its Orange Wednesdays app which offers perks like 2-for-1 movie coupons. Of course we’re still waiting for Vodafone to start selling the iPhone as it announced it would in September, so we’re quite interested to see how long this record last. One more thing for UK iPhone users. As of today, O2 will legitimately unlock your phone provided that you adhere to the following conditions: Pay Monthly users can unlock at any time but must continue to pay until O2 for services until their term is up while Pay Go subs must have had their iPhone for 12 months and pay a £15 fee. If anyone is interested in this, just visit http://shop.o2.co.uk/update/unlockmyiphone.html to get this process started.

No one gives a crap about the old iPhone anymore.

Seriously why don’t you jump off the bandwagon already. Hopefully you’ll be able to get 3G coverage long enough to have your legal gaurdian help you sound out all these big words.

It’s hype with a reason to be.. can’t fight that with just words. This really proves that all the other smart phones profoundly suck in one way or another that stick with users.
I had an Orange UK account for over 15 years & not once did i have an issue with coverage. Like an idiot I paid to terminate my newly renewed Orange contract to join 02 to get a 3GS. I’ve never had so many issues since ive been with 02 and their coverage is awful. My wife has better coverage with her ‘3′ network (probably the worst in the UK for coverage). I’ve just registered with 02 to get my phone unlocked and may well pay over £400.00 just to get out of my 02 contract so I can go back to Orange. Its a great phone but let down by the coverage. What a pain in the ass this all is.
Wow, even with Cnet’s UK calling it worst phone its still selling well in the UK? Just played with the Droid today, good built, hate the design. I wonder how long it takes to get use to the flat Droid keyboard. Overall , good phone and certainly an alternative to the Iphone. I’m sticking with my 3gs, interesting what Apple will have next year.
CAN YOU HEAR ME NOW???

If the reason is that Orange’s coverage is superior to o2, wait till Vodafone get their hands on the iPhone. Their 3G performance is way ahead of the others and, of course, they’ve got corporate Britain sewn up.

Wow, if I remember correctly this one day total is better than China’s launch month total.
iPhone haven’t been offically launched for a month in China.
Not even two weeks.
But yeah, only suckers would buy a WiFi less iPhone with such a unholy price tag.

Go Orange! I have been waiting for this day. Half the guys in the office have iphone already but I have been waiting since for ever for Orange to get their phones out. Pay as you go is the way for me. I am so excited about the iphone on orange I am even going to put some time together to create a website to help others out with finding the cheapest reseller.

i don’t think so Steven. I think there are plenty of people into Open Source Development that both could do very well. i’d like to have the option for both so that i could bye one for me and the other for my wife and be able to swamp when i like. They are both viable and profitable and have cool unique features. both side by side on the same network could really promote hardware/software growth.
Come one fanboys give it more hate to the iphone and AT&T, that kind of feeling is making them a lot of cash. 2 millions switchers since the first iphone and counting, despereation from the big red is there for a reason….!!!!
IPHONE RULES! Android is an amazing operating system I am a apple fanboy and I have nothing bad to say about it, BUT LETS BE HONEST “TO BE THE BEST YOU HAVE TO BEAT THE BEST”…Ric Flair. AND THE DROID IS A WASTE OF PARTS!!
BGR any ideas as to what this is? Because no matter how hard I tried to get it out, he said he absolutely could not say what it is.

the sad thing is, if the iPhone didn’t exist you would be a fanboy of the droid and you know it. The droid has really proven the complete “sellout” mentality of consumers to a specific product today. Wow people it’s an electronic toy/tool stop bowing down to an artificial idol.
Maybe fireball, but it does exist.
I would be more worried from the Droids point of view with it’s limitations, 256Mb for all Apps and the fact Android doesn’t do floating point math – that is going to be an issue with certain types of games.
Yeah each platform has its current strengths and weaknesses. But those S/W are what makes one platform/device more appealing to some over others.
How the heck could a phone that copies the iPhone exist without the iPhone? That doesn’t make any sense. There are a bunch of phones introduced since Jan 2007 that would not exist if it weren’t for the iPhone.
Companies would still be copying the Blackberry and making phones with WAP browsers and hard keyboards if it weren’t for Apple.
My point is not bashing the iPhone at all. i’ve always said i like it. My point is that people defend hardware/software more than they defend their own family sometimes. i’m really glad that Apple has done what they did and that is has caused some real growth overall, but that doesn’t mean we should make the item our point of reference for our lives.
I guess APPLE rules.
don’t you mean November 2007 BGR?
