iPhone ready to make its way to ‘The Shack’ this month

We all knew that the iPhone was going to start hitting more third-party retailers at some point, but we just didn’t think it would be this soon. RadioShack, or The Shack, has announced that it will be carrying the iPhone 3G and 3GS in select stores in Dallas-Fort Worth and New York City at the end of this month. The company expects to have the iPhone available nationwide in 2010. So, for now, you’ll have to settle with Apple Stores, AT&T retail locations, Wal-Mart or Best Buy if you want to nab one. Come to think of it, there really is no shortage of suppliers so if you’re finally going to be eligible to upgrade or you want to pick one up on a whim, you can add another to the list of iPhone retailers to choose from. But just remember where all this Shack nonsense started, ok?

Hey, while I do have an iphone I haven’t been on At&t since July, so personally it doesn’t make my day, but if it makes you feel better, you can rub one out over this, loser

*sigh* I’ll sadly be upgrading my 3G to a 3GS because I dropped the thing and broke the volume/vibrate switch COMPLETELY.

I wanted to wait for the iPhone 4G to see what I should get on ATT. =[

You don’t have to upgrade. As far as I know you can go to the Apple store and get a 3G for the “upgrade” price.

If you’re under warranty and your phone doesn’t look like it has been dropped, I’m sure apple with just replace it.

On the other hand, if you’re out of warranty, I’m sure you could pick one up off of craigslist or buy a refurb 3G off contract for a pretty low price.

i dropped my 3G out of warranty and Apple replaced it with a refurb for $199 no contract extension on ATT. My screen shattered.

      • Joe the Plumber says:

Oh cool didnt know that. Im already one year in my contract so if I go the Apple store I just get another 3G and not have to worry about some super high price or extending my contract?

Looks like AT&T is feeling threatened by the Droid and now all of a sudden pushes the availabiltiy of the iPhone nationwide through new selected 3rd party retailers.

Bout time. I like it when the bigger carriers feel threatened enough to start being more competitive.

Now all we need is a newer carrier to sell the iPhone with a lower priced data plan……

i’m with that! i wonder how crazy it would be to have iPhone on VZW. i know this has become an anti-VZW place lately but that’s who i have so the more options the better i say.

iPhone will most likely be available 3rd q next year on Verizon GMS network. Yes, GSM not CDMA

Are you talking about the LTE network? I could see that as by then both AT&T and Verizon will start rolling out their LTE networks.

@Danny, settle down, as boy genius mentioned in the article, iPhone and radioshack have been in talks for quite awhile. Sorry to tell you but the droid is no threat to ATT. Apple and ATT just had their best qtr’s ever. So that partnership is doing just fine. And if network coverage was so bad on big blue, then explain how 3.2 million people chose the iphone during July, august, and September.

LJ: If the iPhone proved anything, it was that people will overpay for poor service as long as the phone is cool.

AT&T has also proved that its a one-trick pony. Most new subs come for the iPhone. They’ve milked the exclusivity for 2 years. AT&T even refuses to unlock the phone even for those who’ve finished their contract or bought the phone straight out.

Why else would a Verizon sub go to AT&T? If I’m going to pay the same price, I’m going with the network that doesn’t drop calls all over the place. At least with T-Mobile you get better pricing. They don’t try to charge Verizon prices without delivering.

The only good thing about this whole AT&T/Apple deal is that AT&T was forced to upgrade their network after being exposed by an influx of users. Once the iPhone mania settles down and/or MaBell loses her exclusivity and people defect the network should be better built and less crowded.

Droid is no threat to AT&T? are you out of your mind? Droid may not be an iPhone killer but anyone in their right mind would rather have a good/solid phone on the best and most reliable network don’t you think? VZ sold 100K Droids on day 1. I’d rather have a Motorola Razr on Verizon then iPhone on AT&T, it’s just plain ambarrassing having dropped calls or no signal in 2009/2010. Wait for 4q results and see.. next year will even be better when Verizon rolls out 4G and GSM. Verizon is rolling out 14 new devices this q and the CEO promissed a new device every every month thereafter.

Radio Shack offering iPhones will at least be good in my area. Due to a community co-operative At&t corporate stores aren’t allowed in my county (they contracted their tower usage rights to the former). This means many have to drive a great distance to get to a corporate store.

May be a bit late but will save me gas!

I think Radio Shack needed this. They used to be one of the premier shops for cool tech at affordable prices…now they can’t even compare to the electronics section at Wal Mart.

I cant believe that Radio Shack, a retailer that sells multiple carriers is being allowed to sell the Iphone when retailers that have exclusive contracts with At&t still can’t.

There are tons of places in both the usa and Canada where the shack is the only electronics retailer for miles. Even in my hometown of st Louis, missouri, if you
live in certain inner-city areas, places like wal-mart and best buy require a car to get to, but you can take a bus to the local Shack. This includes downtown and midtown – areas that have a large growing middle class. I tend to also give radio shack giftcards to my relatives because I can order them online (I live in japan now) and I know there’s always one close by to them.

i might agree with you if Sprint had any coverage where i live. i’m not sure how many times i have to repeat myself on this same issue. VZW really does have the best coverage for my whole state. AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile are very patchy statewide not to mention in my living room. So i guess sometimes you really do get what you pay for. Besides the point was it would be interesting to see how many of us moving to android devices would end up with iPhone’s if the option was their.
