DROID-day

Alright, fellas. It has been one heck of a journey, but today, the Motorola DROID and HTC DROID Eris are finally on sale to the general public. From what we’re hearing, stock levels are insanely high so it doesn’t look like many people that want one will miss the opportunity to take one home. If you’re in line, or at the store, or already snatched one and have made the trip home, shoot us in some photos in the comments and let us know how you’re liking the new Android lineup on Verizon, ok?

Did anyone here get an actual user guide with their phone? I don’t mean the quick start guide, but a user manual.

Paper user manuals not being supplied. Verizon rep says for the greenest of reasons. You must log on to either the HTC or Verizon site for the full manual

Press and hold the widget until you feel it (a few seconds or less) vibrate then drag it to the waste basket that just appeared at the bottom of the screen

I + it. I agree. The interface, when going between the 3 home screens is laggy. I didn’t like that. I wanted the Droid so bad, until I went to the store and saw the Eris. The HTC sense interface is amazing. You should check out the Eris.

I was at Verizon Friday (to get an Eris) and Sunday (to get a Droid) – they were packed both times. I really loved the Eris but took it back because I wanted the 2.0 OS and the extra functionality with Google Maps (layers, Latitude, voice search for GPS functionality).

The Eris is awesome and though there is a bit more of a learning curve I really like the Droid. After playing with it for about 2 hours I am very comfortable using it. I also love how many free apps are available that are really good. So far everything I wanted to do with the phone has had a highly rated free app to accomplish it.

I love the bar code “scanning” (uses the camera but you don’t have to take a pic) capability to comparison shop, the movie times app, the app for finding nearby places to eat or shop, etc.

I’m not wild about the slide-out keyboard, but I mostly use the onscreen right now and I’m sure with a little practice I will get better at using the keyboard.

The screen is huge and beautiful, the camera is good, and I haven’t had any trouble with the browser at all. I love this phone.

long press on the widgets. The tray icon will change to trash bin. You can then pull it to the bin.

hold your finger on the item as if you are going to move it. The pull-up tab at the bottom changes to a trash can, so move the item there…..(the tab you use to select from all the shortcuts, widgets etc)

I purchased 2 Verizon Droid phones. I bought the Droid and the Droid Eris. One for me and my teenage son. I got him the Droid, as he liked the bigger screen and loved the keyboard. I preferred the smaller Eris, and the HTC Sense.

Ok, so you all ready for this? I have been a long time Verizon customer, and loyalty has paid off. I had a $100.00 credit that I can use on any phone. So I used it to purchase the Eris, and I also got the $100.00 rebate! In addition to the Driod $100.00 rebate I will only be paying $100.00 for both phones. Now that is a deal you can’t beat.

I still may purchase the HTC Dragon, if it does not feel to big, and the Eris turns out to be too slow. Oh and by they way my Verzion Rep from my employer took care of all this for me over email and one phone call. The phones are also being shipped to me over FedEx (for free), so I won’t get to use them until Monday. But that is ok, since I didn’t have to leave my home, and I don’t mind waiting. Is that great customer service? Verizon is great!

Robert: I have been with AT&T for many years. I sit in my home office and CAN NOT GET a reliable signal. I don’t “hate” AT&T but I’m not their biggest fan. I’ve been interested in the Droid but what I’m learning most about in the posting is the satisfaction most have had with Verison. Appreciate your comments.

Well, I’ve heard complaints about the accuracy or google maps. Mine is dead on within 10 feet. Sitting in my living room, it shows me in the street right outside the window.

I’m wondering if those that have accuracy problems have the GPS turned off? It is an option.

I was an early adopter of the G1, and love the Android OS. So I went and tried the droid today. Holy Batman!! The droid is faster on VZ 3G than my beloved G1 is on WiFi (and I have blazing fast broadband WiFi). Since I am Android proficient, I could go anywhere in the Android OS immediately on the droid. It’s very snappy — no lag really — much much improved over my G1, which got Android started just barely over 1 year ago. And I loved the keyboard — I was flying on it immediately right in the VZ store — I have no idea what the complaints about the keyboard are. I found it excellent!

Technology moves quickly. Time for new Android hardware on a better 3G network. I bust my T-Mobile contract and buy my new droid tomorrow!! Wow, that phone really flies! If you haven’t tried it, get out of the house and go to a VZ store and try one. You’ll be glad you did (hint:don’t forget your wallet — you’re gonna need it)

is it possible the lag for the camera saving pictures is due to the microSD card (since they sell different cards that are supposedly “faster” processing), I’m wondering if you could buy a better microSD card and that would speed up the process for saving pictures

    Thumb up Thumb down 0

    • webby says:

What class is the micro SD card that came with the phone? As far as I know, class 6 is the fastest.

Class 6 is what everyone was buying for the G1, because many were putting apps on the SD card, in which case, speed of the SD card can be an issue for the G1.

Having said that, IMHO, the reported lag with the droid camera, due to its severity, is prolly got very little or nothing to do with the speed of the card, unless they included a really really substandard crappo card. I think the camera issues are software related, and will be addressed by an OTA update from Google thru VZ Also you can expect developers to get to work and offer apps, some free and some costing only $1 or $2 that will greatly improve the camera. The camera on the G1 was improved in this way.

      No prob.

Since we don’t get a manual, you can download it from Motorola.com Its a PDF file in the owner support section.

      • hm says:

though still not much of a manual…. for those of us not much experienced in smart phones, it seems the learning process involved holding your finger over an item and seeing what pops up or what it lets you do….

any ideas on how to mute the shutter noise on the camera without turning the phone ringer off?

This is being typed on my droid.. I actually like the keyboard.. thought about waitin on the passion and snapdragon but decided I was uninterested for the same reason I was never dlightly interested in an iphone.. I won’t Touch a pure touchscreen..unlike most people it seems, I require my phone to have a physical keyboard.. love the droid..thing flies and screen is gorgeous.. I can’t use blackberry keyboards but have no problem with this one..onscreen keyboard is good too.

I just picked up my new Droid from the Emeryville, CA Verizon store. I was going to get the phone from Best Buy but they told me that I could not get an early upgrade on my account which Verizon would allow me to do. So I ended up at a Verizon store a block away. I’ve now been playing with the phone for a few hours now
and really like it. I can’t say I have much to compare it to as my last phone did not have nearly the features of this one. I do like the digital keyboard more then the hardware one. So far I love the phone.

by the way I bought the belt-clip and cover from verizon since that was all they had left at the store (no plastic cases) and then decided that I didn’t like the look. Took it back to another store that and was told those belt-clip units weren’t supposed to be sold in the first place due to a recall. Anyone that bought one might want to check on that…. (not sure how “up on things” the 2nd store was. Sounds like many verizon stores were not up to date on the droid stuff….)

Uhhh … only 3 screens (unfortunately). At least until the tech wizards get the droid rooted and some stable custom roms are available on the web, aka cyanogen, the king of Android modders so far. Then we will have more home screens (as I do on my rooted G1)

so what did they accomplish by removing multi-touch from the core apps? I was surprised when PicSay supported the pinch and zoom just fine.. and browsers like steel going to follow? thats just silly corporate nonsense.

    Thumb up Thumb down +1

    • Brian says:

I don’t think they removed anything. The core apps never had pinch/zoom, it was third party UI that added those functions.

      Thumb up Thumb down 0

    • Arien says:

I’m pretty sure Apple patented the pinch and zoom in the web browser. Thats why on the Eris, when you pinch and zoom it automatically does the word wrap.

I picked up an Eris on Friday. Love it.

Only problem so far…HTC doesn’t seem to have their sync software ready for the Eris. I downloaded the kit, as well as an Android kit…but the HTC Sync software won’t work/find my phone.

    Anyone else having this issue?

You have to mount the phone to your computer from the notifications by dragging from the top of the device if you have not done so. If you have, Im sorry I haven’t heard that yet. Call 800.922.0204 and ask for TS to support your issue.

      Thumb up Thumb down +1

      • NewtoAndroid says:

I did mount the phone via the pop-up on screen…and dragged the notifications bar down for the Sync prompt. Still didn’t work. I think it’s the HTC software isn’t working on the Eris yet, even though the download came when I chose the Eris on HTC’s support website.

I have been trying to decide for weeks on what phone I want. Everyone has the Iphone and they are please with it. I often play with my co-workers phone. I don’t care for the typing. I heard the Blackberry Storm 2 was better, plus offer turn by turn directions. Now, the Droid phone is out. It’s seens nice. but I don’t think it has the options to choose which voice mail you want to hear first.

    Thumb up Thumb down -1

yes, you get the visual voice mail with the droid (which let’s you choose which voicemails you want to get)

Droid has visual voicemail. so u can choose which to hear first.. However like all verizon phones that offer it it is a 2.99 a month charge to use the feature

      • Omatix says:

Yet another reason to use Google Voice? They’ve just added voicemail-only functionality (i.e. no screwing around with changing your number to your GVoice number).

That said, I recognize that the phone integration of the Verizon VVM is probably better.

Mine worked fine for three days and now it doesn’t.

      WTF!

I wonder if one of the other apps I installed could’ve killed it.

      Thumb up Thumb down 0

    • Luis says:

      I figured it out!

Once you’re in the clock app alarm mode, select your alarm sound, then use the rocker switch on the left side of the phone to turn the volume up.

Somehow, something turns the alarm volume down.

      Could be my butt…
