Verizon launches the LG Chocolate Touch

vzw-chocolate-touch

While many tech geeks who fancy Verizon will be spending the majority of this week debating whether or not to pull the trigger on either the DROID or DROID Eris, today Verizon quietly started selling the LG Chocolate Touch, a non-smartphone with mass market appeal. Equipped with a 3″ touchscreen display and 3.2 megapixel camera, the Chocolate Touch also features support for VZ Navigator, V CAST Music/Video, Visual Voicemail and EV-DO Rev. 0 connectivity. Also of note is a convenience key that leads directly to social media sites like Facebook, MySpace and Twitter as well as the inclusion of Dolby Mobile technology, something which is claimed to deliver “audio quality that rivals MP3 players.” Of course with only 1GB of internal memory and no microSD card in the box users will be forced to drop some extra cash if they wish to listen to more than 250 songs, but at $79.99 on contract after a $50 rebate, what do you expect?Read

The bottom panel of buttons look strange. However, it may sell to those not in the market for a smartphone…

Verizon, verizon, when will you learn that by crippling amazing phones, you lose future customers? I hope that they don’t come back and ruin the DROID

You do know that both Verizon and AT&T cost about the same right? The only difference being that for $20 you get 5000 messages on VZW and on AT&T for the same price you get Unlimited messages.

Wow. Why are Verizon phones always this ugly shade of off-brown? Majority of their phones wouldn’t be as ugly, and would actually be more attractive, if they just stuck to a nice black and chrome color scheme. Including this ugly thing…

    @jd

I’m not seeing where they have crippled this phone, nor would I call it amazing. MicroSD cards are cheaper everyday.VZ’s gotten their shit together as of late.
Is this a resistive or capacitive screen?

I really care less of all the phones that are not smart phones, since any carrier will throw the same old firmware on it and every other phone seems same to me. For, instance in verizon its all the same old red, be it different way of using the red ui like touch screen and all but it still the same. Bottom, line everyone should use a smart phone so that all these carriers are forced to include the 30 data plan as a given.
Honestly, this is just what I think it would make world a better place, wont it?

There’s a number of people who dont want $30 data plans. Some have wi-fi available 24 hours a day (college campuses, most work buildings, apartments, etc) so paying $30 a day (over $750 for your two years on contract) seems like a pretty big waste. Others simply don’t want/need web features on their phone. They want a nice screen for a touchscreen keyboard, watching videos while traveling, etc – but don’t care about web access.

Some of you guys are hilarious! MANY people still use ‘dumb phones’ and have no desire or need to switch.

Many times I’ve tried to offer a great smartphone to my wife but she says she absolutely doesn’t want the extras. This phone is a nice upgrade from her Venus but is not so complicated that it scares her. We’ll probably get it.

Awesome! A great phone for people who do not want or cannot afford a data plan smartphone.

Great price for all it’s included features. This will be a hot seller amongst the non data plan Verizon phones.

Checked out the phone at Verizon today. I was impressed by how thing the phone is. It is a pretty cool touch screen phone. The touch screen is strange though, it seems very soft and you have to push hard to get some things to work. I could see the screen getting damaged easily more so than other touch screen phones.

The texting was a pain. Tried texting for about 15 minutes and while I did get use to it, it won’t ever be easy, very small on screen buttons and not very responsive and accurate.

Overall I think in this price range for those who want a touch screen with the ease of physical texting buttons…I think the enV touch is the best choice. You get all the features of the Chocolate touch and more.

I was told by a Best Buy sales person today that the Chocolate Touch and possibly the LG EnV Touch would soon require the $30 dollar data charge. He said a Verizon Rep. informed them the night before (11-06-09). According to him, if you buy the phone now and they make the switch within 30 days of your purchase they can then force you to add the data plan. Technically, they will “warn” you of the increase, and then offer to terminate the contract. Of course if you choose to terminate… you are out the cost of the phone.

Prior to our Best Buy visit, I was at Verizon and overheard a Rep. tell a customer that he “thought” the Chocolate Touch required the $30 data fee. I thought he screwed up, but he might have been tipping their hand. (Too honest for their own good.)

We walked in prepared to upgrade all of our phones. I was getting a Droid for myself an EnV 3 for the wife and two Chocolate Touches for the kids. The upcoming fees for the Chocolates stopped the deal. Right now I am waiting… and hoping this is not true. I am very disappointed at the thought of a company doing this. I have been with Verizon for at least ten years. Now I am forced to look else where. I loved the coverage, but will not deal with deception.

Has anyone else heard of this?
