Sony Ericsson announces the XPERIA X10

se-xperia-x10

And yet another manufacturer has officially entered the Android game as Sony Ericsson has formally announced the XPERIA X10. Powered by a 1GHz Snapdragon processor and running on Android 1.6 “Donut”, the X10 boasts a 4″ WVGA capacitive touchscreen display, an 8.1 megapixel camera, Wi-Fi, GPS and two flavors of UMTS/HSPA — one of which supports T-Mobile, the other, AT&T — in addition to quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE. Regrettably there is only 1GB of built in memory, although an 8GB microSD card ships in the box. In terms of UI customization, the X10 comes with the UI overlay UX called Rachael (user experience) which extends into two premier apps: Mediascape — the media player which we’ve already seen twice — and Timescape, which more or less is SE’s answer to a MOTOBLUR type skin. Pricing and countries of availability has yet to be announced, but the XPERIA X10 will be available in Q1 2010 in Sensuous Black and Lustre White (yes, we LOL’d, too). Sony Ericsson XPERIA™ X10 introduces an open and integrated world of social media, communication and entertainment

  • XPERIA X10 is the flagship phone in a family of phones coming to market during the first half of 2010. The XPERIA X10 will be available in Q1 2010
  • New UX (user experience) platform lets consumers organise everything and discover more with the most open, human and intuitive user experience yet

London – November 3 2009 – Sony Ericsson today unveils the XPERIA X10, the first phone in a family of phones to deliver a consistent user experience where communication truly becomes entertainment. Building on Sony Ericsson’s entertainment heritage and combining rich graphics with intelligence capabilities, the XPERIA™ X10   introduces a new UX platform that will evolve across the product portfolio and expand over time continuously introducing new features and capabilities.

The UX platform builds on top of the Open OS and creates a unique Sony Ericsson user experience by combining best-in-class entertainment features with signature applications, unrivalled integration of social media services and a rich graphical user interface. The XPERIA™ X10 is the first mobile phone to truly humanise the way people interact with their phones.

Bert Nordberg, President, Sony Ericsson said, “The XPERIA™ X10 and the family of phones launching in the first half of 2010 underpin our commitment to an open and multi-platform strategy that maximises choice for the consumer and delivers the best possible consumer experience. The reaction from our global operator partners to the XPERIA X10 has been extremely positive and we will be rolling out across the world including Japan from the first half of 2010.”

Rikko Sakaguchi, EVP and Chief Creation Officer, Sony Ericsson said, “The XPERIA™ X10 is a fantastic example of our make.believe philosophy because we are pushing the boundaries of what is possible and demonstrating that anything consumers can imagine, we can make possible. With the X10, we are raising the bar we have set ourselves with entertainment-rich phones like Aino and Satio by making communication more fun and playful, multiplying and enriching opportunities to connect.”

Introducing signature applications like Mediascape and Timescape™, the XPERIA™ X10 lets consumers organise everything in their phone in an intuitive way:

  • Sony Ericsson Timescape™ manages all your communication with one person in one place.  Browse through your conversations the bright way to check out your Facebook™, Twitter™, photos, emails, and texts all in one go
  • Sony Ericsson Mediascape is the smart way to get all the music, photos and videos you want from your favourite friends and artists. It accesses content from everywhere – your phone, YouTube™, PlayNow™ – and presents everything for you

Intelligence capabilities, integrated into Mediascape and Timescape™, can automatically recognise connections between contacts, content and media. By recommending alternative ways to communicate or guiding to new media experiences, consumers can discover more in a truly open way. For example:

  • Pressing the new “infinite button” guides you through the connected world, aggregating all your interactions with one person into one view
  • Intelligent face recognition features recognise up to five faces in any picture, automatically connecting them with your social phonebook and all other related communications with that person.

Sony Ericsson’s open approach gives consumers maximum choice and with the XPERIA™ X10, users can download any application that they want direct from a wide variety of stores including PlayNow™ and the Android Market™, co-creating an experience that is entirely unique to them.

Sony Ericsson is also introducing the new Wireless Stereo Headset with FM Radio – MW600. Featuring advanced Bluetooth™ technology and a built-in FM radio, MW600 lets you stream music to your headset in high fidelity through sound-enhancing ear-buds. With a crystal clear OLED display, easy access controls and RDS radio station information, you don’t even need to take your phone with you to tune in to your favourite radio station.

The XPERIA™ X10 supports GSM GPRS/EDGE 850/900/1800/1900, UMTS HSPA 900/1700/2100 and UMTS HSPA 800/850/1900/2100

The XPERIA™ X10 will be available in selected markets from Q1 in the colours Sensuous Black and Luster White.

    Who? says:

Android 1.6? In the first half of 2010?

What a waste. They’re going to spend their time perfecting Rachael in Android 1.6, and then take months to adapt it to 2.0, and U.S. carriers will take their time providing the update.

So the Experia X10 with Android 2.0 in June or July at the earliest? The word I’m thinking of starts with an “f” and ends with an “ail.”

eh.. i think that the final build will come with 2.0. But then again…thats just my assumption ~.~
either way theres really not much to complain EXCEPT the fact that its going to come out in 2010 which really really sucks =/

Not headed for any carrier in the US – was supposed to be headed for T-Mo, but word on the street is that T-Mo has kicked SE to the curb – their last phone being Equinox

Source? I don’t intend to question you, I’m trying to make a decision on whether or not I should wait for this phone.

    @Jones,

I was thinking the same thing. They used to do that back with their older smartphones. Slow software updates. Firmware capabilities behind everyone else. Phones overpriced for their release dates. Slow and laggy. And lack of US band support. And an overall support life span of not much more than a year after purchase. You need to be a serious fanboi to be willing to tuff it out.

I’ve always loved their handsets but, have not bought one because of this.

    MoB says:

Are you guys crazy, this thing is sick. By the way check the official information on Sony Ericssons website.

One question, did every website get there information from the same crappy source? because the HSPA bands are different:

    http://www.sonyericsson.com/cws/products/mobilephones/specifications/xperiax10a?lc=en&cc=ca

    it states: UMTS/HSPA 800/850/1900/2100

Which would mean that an unlocked version would be compatible with almost every network out there. It’s the FIRST phone that I’ve found with a snapdragon processor and capable of using this crappy North American 850/1900 network.

Telus, you will soon have a happy customer and HTC wtf man, I’ve been betting you would be the one… you disappointed me…

First time to see Sony-ericcson all “balls-deep” on a new smartphone in particular an android phone? We agree, that Xperia has a bitter history on older models. Hopefully, this X10 release will turned out to be a happy-ending. But still, this phone has a far way to go on competing the iPhone kind or the Killer-Droid

Fairly sure I’ll just get the DROID in hope that somebody will release a Rachael skin/ROM for it.

    Which will most likely happen.
    I hope…

I’m not going to wait 6months-1year for a phone that, like other people have said, will be outdated by the time it’s released.

    Damn SE

    Nice looking phone though

I love this phone and want one RIGHT NOW! BUT… if releasing on Q1 and possible getting to the US like in the middle of next year… is not an option. Unless I can buy it oversees and activate here with t-mobile or something like that. I’m a bit disappointed that they using Android 1.6 and not 2.0. Also it doesn’t seem to support multi-touch but for the future pack this phone have… I can overlook the lack of multi-touch. For now I have a HTC Hero that I love but would rather have the HTC Passion or this sick Sony X10 that is wonderful.

This is what Android is meant to be. Btween the Droid, Cliq, Behold 2 and now this; we are finally moving forward from the good-old G1 days.

Just checked out the hands-on live action video on you tube. Right now it looks slow. Nothing like the video above. The HTC HD2 is extremely smooth (iPhone killer smooth…. if that’s all you want) so hopefully with some more software developement over the coming 2-5 months things will improve which I’m sure they will.

    check out

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VYWEFG7iLVU&feature=rec-LGOUT-exp_fresh+div-HM

It shows a video of a swede playing a 3D game on the X10 which utilizes the accelerometer, it’s decent. Personally I just want a multi-tasking OS with a decent GUI interface and a fast processor with some 3d graphic capabilities for fun… this thing could do it. Plus look at that damn camera and it’s got office suite (I assume that means word, excel and ppt) which is key and it’s got like nine things with GOOGLE in the name! four of them are searching applications… cou-one trick-gh cou-pony-ugh…. I kid.

    anyway good talk

Capacitive Screen again?? FAIL!!! when are these people understand that, the responsiveness/easy to use software and screen quality/functionality is some of very important features in a phone. I don’t need a 10 MP or 8 MP camera on the phone if the screen is crap or the software is annoyingly leggy i’m happy with a good 5 Mp, just give the device a better screen and better functionality

Disliked. Thumb up Thumb down -5

oops sorry guys I mixed up haha I did an honest mistake I thought the Screen is resistive screen don’t mind first half of my comment :D

    SatanoscillatemymetallicsonataS says:

@MoB: yes, the phone IS sick… I agree. But it’s Sony Ericsson which means a good piece of hardware that will be marketed and supported poorly.

Go back and read… no one is down on the device, they are down on stupid Sony and how long its going to take.

I guess you all forgot about the X1 already. A phone that took nearly a year to come out with… included T-mo 3G frequencies even… and then was sold unsubsidized for $1,000.

This is why everyone is skeptical.

My thing is: Between this and the HD2. Who will come out for T-mo and who will come out first? Then you’ll know which will be my next phone.
