Verizon to aim for the smartphone crown

One of our really solid connects just had some information for us and we think you’re going to love it. With the Motorola DROID being Verizon’s hot handset at the moment, you’d figure that the Moto would be it for a while, right? Well, if our guy is right, we could soon be bombarded with a lot more handsets. Apparently if the DROID launch/sales go really well, (it probably will) Verizon will push up handset releases and practically aim for the smartphone crown. Were talking HTC Passion, Motorola Calgary, Curve2, etc.
Apparently the Curve2 or HTC Passion / Dragon will launch on Black Friday, “whatever is ready first.” The second device would be used in a holiday push around mid-December. I asked why Verizon wouldn’t space this out more and he/she said “best network, best smartphones campaign.” Fair enough.
There are also some handsets coming soon that we “don’t know about,” apparently. Could all four Android devices really launch on Verizon before the end of the year, or really close to it? Plus a couple BlackBerrys, and some other stuff that hasn’t surfaced yet? It seems a little crazy, but hey, more power to them.
UPDATE: We’ve also been told that Verizon will release 15 new phones, mostly smartphones, starting with the BlackBerry Storm2 and continuing into the end of December.

VZW- do you know anything about the palm pres date?
Which means, “There is also some handsets coming soon.”

we are waiting for the smartphne. and i got info about the upcoming Verizon cell phone. i was so excited that i can’t wait for any long.
http://www.verizon-cellphones.org/upcoming-verizon-cell-phones-2010.html
@vzw is the omnia II good? Someone one the vzw forums replied saying a rep in NY said the omnia II was coming with andriod 2.0 is this true? Last do you think that I should wait for the upcoming phones?
Am not vzw but IMAO the O2 would never come with Droid since all “Omnia” will only b Windows Phone!
and thats much better ffor me, with O2 you will have (My phone from Microsoft, 2 application stores, samsung widgets, the only lack of the O2 is the capacitive screen)
By the way Vzw is taking too long to release the O2…
Err… I heard from Unlockr that this phone won’t be running the 1GHz Snapdragon, but instead a 1GHz OMAP Processor.. Thats kind of a dissappointment to find out this phone won’t have a 4′3 inch screen but rather a 3′7, which is the same as the Droid…
Hmm HTC Passion or Motorola Droid?
Ive heard a lot of great things about the Sense UI and also HTC is more experienced in making Android phones so I might wait for the HTC Passion.. I just hope my patience will last me!
Shouldn’t we have just a shitstorm of FCC filing to back all this up? I mean Black Friday is kinda close.
Verizon needs iPhone exclusivity with AT&T to end.
Verizon finally got a great BlackBerry exclusive with the Tour. But so much for that since Bold 2 is way better and makes Tour and its trackball an afterthought.
And back to iPhone. For 3 years everyone that tries to be an iPhone killer is just not. Bold really didn’t try to be an iPhone killer, not really. Thus it succeeded quite well. Whereas Storm took dead aim @ iPhone and wound up being an embarrassment.
Bold 2 is gonna be solid. IPhone *is* solid. And even though – got no ninjas or the like, I’m betting the next iteration of iPhone is gonna be flat out lethal.
Verizon, stick to being the best network, sort of. As long as Bold (1 and 2) and iPhone reside elsewhere, you’re not wearing any crowns.

You could have saved us all the time we spent reading your post and just wrote “I’m an AT&T fanboy!” instead.
Is there any way that VZW could have hid the FCC filings or someone else could have to prevent this being leaked too soon so their competitors wouldn’t have a response for it? I think it will be bigger than a 3.7″ because the Droid Eris is a 3.2″ and a measly half inch increase doesn’t seem to justify what this phone is about. 1ghz processor being the biggest draw factor. If all else fails and it doesn’t launch this year then there are always going to be other releases. VZW has finally decided to become the king of cell companies with the best network and best phones.
From looking at FCC test reports, a filing can take place and be cleared as little as two days later. However, from looking at FCC approval dates to carrier release it looks like around 50 days. The Eris for example was approved 9/15/2009 and released 11/05/2009. While FCC approval far in advance is not required it doesn’t bode well for a mid December release if we haven’t seen approval yet. Has a carrier released a device less than a month after approval? Would be nice if these so called sources claiming a 3rd VZW android device for the holidays threw us some more specific infos.
It just seems like too little sources have information on the passion. Regardless of how “top secret” it may be, someone would have said something. This “TheUnlockr” place that has pics of it is the ONLY place with pics which makes it appear as if it may be a hoax. Not to mention Verizon has already committed to a Black Friday release of the Curve2 which means the passion won’t be available for sale soon enough to generate holiday sales unless they do like the droid eris where they hyped the moto droid hugely and did almost nothing to hype the droid eris then maybe they are doing the same thing with the passion.
the fact that nobody else has seen this phone, tried it out, etc. just screams BS to me but I really hope i’m wrong.
prepare for the worst, hope for the best.
actually the curve2 is slated for the 20th.

black friday is the 27th.
The FCC has already passed the Saygus so if your 50 day average is correct then Mid December wouldn’t be unreasonable on it.
any word on the omnia II or passion VZW?
Can you find out about when the Saygus is supposed to launch? This contact may be able to help you with that. It intrigues me. It looks like it might be what I want in a Smartphone.
Not bad looking. Seems like they could have done a little more with all that space where the 3 buttoms are and the specs are merely par for the course but nothing to write home about. Should be interesting to see if what this little…err…big guy brings to the table piques the interest of potential customers.

I’m beginning to think this HTC Passion was a hoax like the Nokia Superman was. We want more proof BGR. I know you have to protect your ninja but there ARE ways of releasing lots of pictures of this supposed device and still being able to keep the ninja’s identity a secret.
