Samsung Moment now available from Sprint
Motorola’s DROID might be the new darling of the Android world, but other manufacturers are still kicking about and pumping some great offerings. Yesterday Sprint pushed out one such device and that’s the Samsung Moment. It might not be benefiting from the insane amounts of hype that the DROID is enjoying, but it does have a 3.2″ AMOLED touchscreen display, sliding QWERTY keypad, 3.2 megapixel camera, Wi-Fi, GPS, 256MB RAM and a speedy 800MHz processor running on top of Android 1.5. At $179.99 after a $100 MIR, the Moment comes in at $20 cheaper than the DROID, a price we can’t help but think Sprint is already considering slashing.

Great question- why is Verizon launching the Droid Eris with 1.5 even after the Moment and the Hero?
Let the crippling begin…From the Wonder Verizon Wireless Company.
@COCO
b/c it’s VZW
you and your gadget site brethren have all but deflated the post-ctia excitement over the moment. fortunately for samsung, the primary criticism has been touchscreen sensitivity, a subjective concern which anyone can test for themselves in the store.

LMAO yeah stick with your Berries! They will become tasty to Android here in the next year once it outsells BB and Microsoft. LMAO becoming better? With what the Storm 2? The HTC Hero alone kills that thing. If you’re so satisfied with your BB, then why are you looking at Android material? HHHmmm? you’re wanting to come to the great side dont you? admit it. LOL

So how does this run on a 800mhz cpu? does anyone know what kind of battery life to expect?
Traded my Palm Pre for the moment yesterday. so far I am very happy with it. As much as I tried to love my Pre I never could. In the end it was struggle to wait for the Moment to become available I had come to hate the Pre so much. The Pre even gave me one last F.U. as is refused to give up my contact information to be transferred to the Moment by The Sprint stores little transfer machine.
Is this phone crippled with a lack of ROM as the Droid is?
Sprint’s website gives no clue as to the amount of ROM, just says it comes with a 2GB sd card.
From all I’ve read the difference between this and the Moto Droid is cam and 2.0
@Don Louie Cantone
…And .5′ off screen real estate(Droid 3.7 vs 3.2)
…And screen material (Droid has LCD vs AMOLED)
…And processor (Droid has cortex A8 vs Arm 11)
…and more…
way more important than a simple half inch increase in screen size is the massive increase in resolution the droid has.
droid is 854×480
cliq/g1/iphone/moment is 480×320
huuuuuge difference
Can handle up to a 16GB card
Offset keyboard makes for accurate and fast typing. Capasitive touchscreen is crisp, bright, vivid (even in sunlight, what you would expect from good AMOLED screens), great viewing angle with not color distortion…..that’s it, nothing else stands out.
Don Louie,
do you have a link about the wimax stuff? It would be nice if there was actual new “news” to read on here, rather than the daily Droid promotion.
go to engadgetmobile, phonearena, phonenews or fiercewireless. posted links in vzw smartphone article but for some reason it need to be moderated
I thought the screen was resistive-touch?! Its a good deal. I think if you dont want to or are able to go w/vzw this would be a good one. Running cupcake, but am sure you’ll be able to get Eclair as soon as it available (like wm6.5!? Next yrs?)… I think once its running Eclair it’ll be Sprints “Droid” (as the potential anyways…)
i like the optical trackpad.. come one htc we need these on the wm phones.. since there is no dpads any more u gotta go the moto or samsung route..
Let’s not forget that this is about $700 cheaper per year with about the same plan from Sprint as the Droid is on Verizon’s plan. Reviewers leave that out way too often.
Battery life 100 to 80 in 2 mintues wtf ? I’m pissed
One thing droid doesn’t do is style though feature, performance ur troubling for competition
I love sprint and have never had a issue. I left ATT and never looked back. I travel all over the country. My buisness and personal accounts are through Sprint. No real issues on my end. Sprint sells most of their phone with the roaming off, to cut down on money they pay Verison. You have to turn it on. The down side to Roaming is the phone is always looking for their network, so battery is eaten up.
I bought this phone since I got sick of all the dropped call from att.. I love this phone! and i get unlmtd calls to ANYONE with a cell phone and paying half the price I was with att… im happy!
anyone else notice this seams to handle video/youtube better than the hero?
When is samsung going to start producing some really nice polished smart phones instead of these lackluster peices… Omnia II was pretty disappointing despite the impressive spec sheet.
I ve had hero for a week and just exchanged it for the samsung moment I’m not impressed as far as let’s see hmmmm… Everything ! I’m going back to my hero. This is a lathargic piece of samsung. Aka samsung instincQ this phone has a lot going against it. 2 things it has going for it: led display and a great paper weight. Slide out keyboard buttons stink even though its backlit(that’s theonly plus)…..great selling point not. Man can wait to get my hero back…….. email me if you have questions dseaman70@gmail.com it is user preference like the whole potato or glass half full argument but I’ve thouroughly tested both phones and hero wins my vote only thing I wish it had was camera flash.
Hey all, I need to decide between the Samsung Moment and the HTC Hero. Can any of you give me some real good stats to look at to help me make a decision? I’m leaving the over priced Verizon network or else I’d get the droid.
I was all set to buy 2 Droids. I was very excited about the screen. In theory it sounded great. In practice, I was underwelmed. For geneal use there is not much of a difference in the resolution. It was nice to see web pages displayed, but they were mostly unreadable and had to be blown up anyway. I suppose for someone playing a game this would matter.
There is no comparison between the screens on the Droid and Moment. The Amoled screen was much better than the droid screen. In fact I thought the hero screen looked better as well.
So I went from a Pre, to a Hero, almost Droid, to a Moment. I’m not entirely happy with Moment either. It is too thick. I like the Hero and Eris form factor, but these devices were very sluggish for me. If Droid were on Sprint I would pick it because it is thinner than the Moment. But considering 2 droids would cost me $70 more a month than Sprint, the choice was easy.
Sprint Samsung SPH-m900 is really a great phone, but is not a perfect phone. The only issue Samsung need to fix is the poor battery life. The way to maximize the battery is turn off Wi-Fi, Bluetooth… oh, you may find the way on a Blog here:
