Android 2.0 ported to the G1/Dream

android-2-g1

A mere two days after its release, Android 2.0 SDK has already been ripped from the womb and ported over to a T-Mobile G1. Currently in the most crude state possible, the cooked ROM runs as quickly as Babe Ruth did at his heaviest (and drunkest). The mere fact it’s able to run without melting the G1 and its 192MB of RAM, though, should give hope that the fine folks over at XDA-Developers will be able iron out enough wrinkles to make it usable as a daily driver. The only question is will G1/Dream and myTouch 3G/Magic users be treated to some delicious Eclairs like Hero users, or will they be stuck stuffing their faces with Donuts? We’re thinking the latter. Hit the jump for a video.

@worldbfree4me ever heard of multiple paritions? If you don’t understand root fully then don’t speak on it. You should go sell your phone for $50 though. You don’t deserve it after that comment.

Hate to be pedantic, but since your preaching surely you should be saying – “If you don’t understand partitions, symlinks and the Linux OS”

root is simply a special user which allows for complete overriding control of your system.

As a tmobile user I am debating on picking up either a Cliq or BB 9700 next month… The lack of 2.0 on the Cliq though has kind of disappointed. Do you think it will get a 2.0 update?

Is it just me, or did that little 10 minute demo take a decent chunk out of his battery life?

Well, first of all… If you have a G1 and want to take your chances at rooting it, you will EASILY be able to get Android 2.0 to fit onto your “obselete” device.

There are some great devs out there who have managed to get HTC’s Hero Sense UI which is more physically demanding out of the CPU to run buttery smooth on the G1 (and they said it couldn’t be done)

Fast forward to today, I’ve read so many articles that the G1 is NEVER going to get 2.0 (OFFICIALLY) and worst of all, it wouldn’t be able to handle it if it did. That may be true. BUT, as you can see clearly in this video, it can handle it. Its the ROM that is rough and needs to be ironed out. Not the hardware.
Keep in mind this was ripped out of the developer SDK and is not the REAL thing. Not to mention, the only thing really running sluggish in this video is the launcher (homescreen). Everything else is quick and responsive.
All us G1 users need to is patience. Once some great developers like Cyanogen get their hands on the source code, this baby will be FLYING on the G1.
    No doubt in my mind….

So don’t sell your G1’s just yet (we have yet to see a TRUE successor). Maybe its just time to root (jailbreak) that old technology and breath new life into it…. Android 2.0 life. =)

Does this news mean that there’s a good chance that we’ll see an Android 2.0 ROM for the HTC HD2?

      Do your homework.

Then root if you haven’t already and LOVE your device again. You will be able to switch to and shortly from it that way. As you can see it’s very clunky right now. Enjoy root though!

Just a recommendation: @cyanogen is working on it. Wait for his build if you really wanna see it work on the G1.

So i’m still curious…after reading some articles, it looks like the mytouch DOES have enough ROM memory for 2.0. But, does anyone know if it has enough RAM memory???? I really want 2.0 and need to know if should return my mytouch before my 30 days are up.

Android 2.0 SDK is the next big thing. If the droid release is a success. Then we may face a new breed of droid-apps competing with its formidable rival “Apple apps”. The only question here is, Can the self-proclaimed world’s fastest OS (android 2.0) beat iPhone OSX in terms of cost:efficiency ratio?

Wow. Ok, you know that of ALL of the things that could run slow, that’s the one WORST thing to have?

I have a rooted G1 running xrom 1.5 and the crap is still slow. Yeah, running an app is great… its backing out back to the home screen thats about the most frustrating garbage I’ve ever seen.

“Then root if you haven’t already and LOVE your device again”
Yeah. Sure. If you say so. I even got the overclock widget and it still runs like crap. What rooting my G1 actually did was make me care LESS about it because I soon realized how much hyperbole you people put into it.

Rooting = Not all that. The only really good benefit is partioning your SD card so apps can run from the card… outside of that… pointless. I got, what, like 3 ‘unlocked’ options that weren’t there before? Three! Wow.

Whatever. I’ll just wait for the next better handset and let this G1 run itself into the ground.

I have the tmobile G1 Rooted with Cyanogen-4.2.3.1 and have had multi-touch and it automatically puts apps on my sd card(all you have to do is partition it which is not hard for you linux user’s out there) and every time you reboot it clears all the cache. This ROM is literally flying faster than anything i have seen out there. If you guy’s have the G1 i suggest it. I still have 74MB free on my G1 so for all you who waste your money on upgrading right away are stupid. Wait until they release an android phone with the 1GHZ snapdragon processor( the most powerfull processor currently for phones. The droid is cool and all but just save your money and wait people.
