HTC Hero to get Android 2.0

HTC Hero

The Android 2.0 news keeps on a comin’! According to HTC via Twitter, the Hero will be blessed with an Eclair software update although an exact release date has yet to be determined. All signs indicate HTC will forgo the 1.6 update and focus on getting the Sense UI tweaked for 2.0 and kicking on the Hero. First the DROID, now the Hero…what handset will be next to grab a little Eclair?

The rumors are true! Hero will be getting an Eclair update. We ask for your patience as we update Sense for the fancy new Android OS.”

I wonder if Eclair will address some of the lag issues that the Hero has. Will BGR do another review if and when Eclair is released for the Hero?

I really do hope 2.0 fixes the lag. I love the features of the phone but as is i’d say a fair comparison would be a 7 Series BMW with a geo metro engine.

Download a task manager. My Hero is quite fast.

What do you mean by that? Will a task manager speed up the hero? I have been wanting to get one, but lag is an issue for me so I’m holding off until the 2.0 update.

I’m just saying out of the box, not after adding task managers, etc. You’re kidding yourself if you think this phone experiences no lag out of the box.

Have you guys installed the firmware update? Mine had lag issues out of the box but since applying the update its lightening fast.

I keep hearing about this lag, but I’ve yet to experience it with the one exception being that if I shutdown something big, like a movie that I’m watching on my Hero, it can take a bit for the UI to become responsive. This is both expected and accepted in that situation. Other than that, I never experience any lag.

Does this mean Samsung Moment will get 2.0?? 800mhtz Processor and 2.0!!!! Maybe this means like Ry said we could get a 2.0 senseUI ROOT to put on the samsung, although that would take a while to add key board etc… Most likely senseUI on top of 2.0 update… Anyone know more about samsung moment update?

Quick question Andrew. Im new to the whole ‘rooting’ thing. Know the idea behind it and what it offers just not familiar with the actual process. I too am interested in seeing Sense UI on the Moto Droid. Any Suggestions you may have for video or other Rooting tutorials on doing so? I know Ive seen a couple on Youtube but they werent always concise. Thanks!

      Thumb up Thumb down 0

      • troy says:

there’s more to ‘Rooting’ to another phone different from the original than people think. you have mapping to buttons, etc, adding in the keyboard, camera settings, etc. I don’t think it would be a simple pull from the hero and put on another phone. I believe it would have to be pulled, changed to accomidate the differences, then rooted to a phone.

        • tk says:

Yeah Troy I kind of assumed as much. Plus you void your warranty dont you? Not sure but Sense UI is just eye candy for the most part anyway though the widget selection seems to be slightly more plentiful and functional than stock Android or anything Moto has released to date.

Not really sure how this is good news. We all know eventually all Droid phones will be updated to 2.0. HTC states nothing new. A date is what is needed. I bet the Hero will not see 2.0 until sometime next year.

In my opinion I agree with hyundaifans.com, in that I would THINK ‘most’ android phone would get the 2.0 update. The question i also agree that is the most important is when! If we get a date of hero and moment upgrade than that answers my previous question.

To which phone are you referring? The phone pictured in the post is the HTC Hero from Sprint and is currently available with a modified version Android 1.5 and HTC Sense. Verizon will offer the Motorola Droid with Android 2.0 and the HTC Droid Eris with similar specs as the Sprint Hero on November 6th.

Actually, first the nothing, because right now NO PHONE has it. No news here folks, go elsewhere for real news, stay here for shameless “lifestyle” tech whoring. Maybe a bentley article next…

    • Mike says:

I would think so since it’s part of 2.0. This may make me go for the Eris and hope the 2.0 happens even though articles said no just a few days ago when it was announced.

the eris is still gonna be on 1.5 initially.. and its not laggy, comparing sense or touch flo 3d to an icon grid is idiotic.. of course an icon grid is faster.. sense is fast enough

FYI for anyone wanting to root there Hero or Droid, CDMA root is not available yet. Its going to take some time to get it working.

As for the Moto Droid, good luck getting that rooted before the New Year. XDA is only for HTC phones so you guys will have to find a Moto website with top devs to get it….think i’ll stick with HTC for root.

I’m disturbed that this is news.

Why can’t Google roll out EVERY software update to EVERY device? Why do we have to get the blessings of the phone manufacturer or carrier?

This is one thing I’m envious of the iphone about. Every software update is available to every iphone, and at the same time too. None of this waiting for your phone to let you download it. You can do it whenever you want.

When will Google do this for Android? I hate worrying that my device will no longer receive updates and I’ll have to buy a whole new phone.

Agreed, this is an area that Apple really excels in. It doesn’t hurt that they are the only ones making the hardware though.

      • blah says:

You sort of answered the question yourself… it’s BECAUSE iPhone OS only runs on Apple iPhone that they can control the release of updates. Whereas since Android is “open source”, a device manufacturer can opt to make any changes they wish. Generally this is a good thing, but where it falls apart is in cross-hardware support.

        Thumb up Thumb down +1

        • Mark says:

Plus blah – the I-phone only runs on one network. How do we know that ATT isn’t also controlling th release date?

          Thumb up Thumb down -3

          • Drew says:

Actually the iPhone runs on plenty of networks, just one stateside and unless I’m mistaken all the over seas carriers get their updates at the same time (obviously varying by time zones) so I’d say it’s apple doing the controlling… That said, yeah they only have one piece of hardware. Also they have different versions (or at least carrier settings) that will allow or disallow things like tethering and mms or video recording based on your version of hardware or carrier.

unless the phone uses stock android, the phone manufacturer needs to modify the update to fit the UI

This is a good look for the Hero. I’m glad I didn’t jump on it at release. I will get it once the 2.0 is comfirmed and ready. Maybe then they will have a similar phone coming out with a physical keyboard. Now imagine a Sprint Hero or Verizon Eris with one of those nice HTC slide out keyboards.
