OS 5.0 now available for Verizon BlackBerry Storm 9530

storm-os-5

Verizon Storm users have reason to celebrate tonight because they’re part of a very special user base — the first BlackBerry users to recieve BlackBerry OS 5.0. We’ve already gone over the benefits of OS 5.0 a whole bunch, so all there is left for us to do is tell you how to get the goods. Either fire up BlackBerry Desktop Manager for PC or Mac and accept the prompt to update your handheld, or visit www.verizonwireless.com/storm. We’re just in the process of updating our 9530, but in the meantime, what does everyone that has it loaded up think? Has OS 5.0 made the first-gen Storm the phone it should have been one year ago, or is it just polishing a turd since the BlackBerry 9550 is just around the corner?

I have been trying to update for two days with my MAC using Desktop Manager for MAC. I keep getting this error:

BlackBerry® Desktop Manager could not download the required files.

There may be a problem with your network connection or the server is not responding. Please try again later.

    Any suggestions would be great!

epic fail… the OS failed during the load. now my phone wont turn back on. just a red flashing light. Ive never had a problem before with any new OS. Im running snow leopard on mac book pro. they should have released it OTA. Ive had better luck with that

I downloaded 5.0 today and at this point I don’t see why I would need the Storm 2. This is exactly how the first generation Storm should have been when it was first released. Well done RIM!! Excellent software update!!!

Encountered no problems using BB Desktop to backup and then install 5.0.

5.0 will absolutely please all Storm users.
Appears to have addressed and resolved all Storm defects. Operation much more elegant.

On another matter: Anyone who has experienced dirt under the glass is entitled to a free exchange for another Storm. This is called a mfg. defect and subject to terms of the warranty. Call Verizon 800 number for tech support.

    Good luck.

Be sure to request unit mfg. in July or after since this is when BB made improvement to specifications.

Everything is awesome, but then I liked the previous version. All but one thing – what happened to the Media Player? Am I missing something – I can’t find the Music option. What’s up with that?

    Vzw Tech says:

There will never be an OTA for the 5.0 software, file is to big to be pushed OTA.

    Techy says:

Why wouldn’t they do OTA? The 5.0 OS is only approx. 22MB larger then 148, which you could get OTA.

Other then the “new” improvements made in the 5.0, it’s still a buggy OS. IMO it was released to soon, it should have went through a lot more testing.
151 and 167 are much more stable and reliable.

After loading the new OS 5, the tethering feature to VZ Access Manager no longer works. Verizon tech support says they are aware of this problem and will have to either update VZ Access Manager or BB OS 5 to regain this feature. Meanwhile, you can no longer use your Storm as a modem for your laptop. Boy, that’s progress!

Yep, same for me…. the phone froze, then deleted everything, then froze again. Flashing red light.
I did manage to reload an older OS, which got the phone to work…but so many apps gone, as well as the VZ manager-no Get it Now. This sucks!

I found this on the crackberry forums:
The music icon is hidden by default in OS 5. go to the menu and select show all then go looking for it… for some it has been in applications… in my case it was on the home screen since that’s where i had it pre-update.

Ever since the 5.0 download texting has turned into a nightmare. If your in a constant conversation it will freeze up and you have to resubmit name to read what was sent. It will take text msg out of context

Yeah, I’m pretty well satisfied with the new OS aside from the fact that I am having a problem with google maps. the latest OS for mobile maps seems great, but the touch screen doesn’t work… Any suggestions how to resolve this problem?

    John says:

Just upgraded to 5.0 and was running some test emails and noticed the following:
    1) in the menu field there isn’t a “reply” option, only a “reply all” option
    2) if using the “reply” icon at the bottom of the window, it actually choses “forward,” thus the address field is empty and you have to retype the addy you’re trying to reply to each time.

Has anyone experienced these issues and/or does anyone know of a fix.

Alright, I got OS 5.0 up and running, but when my phone is supposed to ring (for texts/calls/notifications/etc.) it just beeps and never rings. -.-
How do I fix this? I’ve looked through the options pretty thoroughly, maybe I just missed something?
