Netflix and Sony partner up to allow streaming movies on PS3

All you movie addicts who own the PlayStation 3 no longer have to envy Xbox 360 users. Sony and Netflix are teaming up to bring movie streaming to the Ps3. The bonus for those on the PlayStation Network is, since your PSN accounts are free, all you need is a Netflix account to watch movies whereas Xbox 360 users need a $50-per-year Xbox Live Gold membership. The service will launch in November and if you decide to use your PS3 to access your Netflix account (why wouldn’t you?), Netflix will send a Blu-Ray disc that will allow you to access its library. It might seem like a hassle to pop in the disc every time you want to watch movies, but Netflix says it’s working on a software update for the PS3 that will do away with the need for a disc. It looks like you gamers and movie buffs are about to see double the couch time.

I wish I could find some data on what will be watchable through the system.

I have Netflix, but the “watch now” selections on my PC are few, old, and generally lousy.

Will the PS3 “watchable” movies be exactly the same? Anyone with XBOX know if their selections are the same as the ones you can view on the PC?

I have Netflix on the Xbox 360 and it only streams what is in your Instant Queue.. which are the old, and not very good movies..

I have Netflix on my Blu-Ray player as well, and its the same as the Xbox so I would assume it would be the same on the PS3

This is a nice addition. But popping in a disk every time is silly. I’ll just wait for the software fix.

Anyone know if the Netflix movies through PS3 are capable of displaying closed captions for the deaf?

Yea, putting in a disc to watch a movie is awful. You have to get off the couch and burn 3 calories. NO THANKS!

I know.. having to get off my couch and put in a disk every time I want to watch a movie or play a game…. the horror!
This will actually be better than Xbox, from what I understand its not just your instant que, you can go on and browse their entire watch now selection and select, no computer needed.
For the record, I use Play On right now anyway so all this really doesnt make much of a difference to me

Is the streaming to the PS3 going to be 1080p like it is on the 360? And I’m still waiting for IPTV to cross the pond and get to our shores for the 360

    Re: iDeaf,

Not sure if this is still accurate, but Googled it and then pulled this from another thread:

Q: Can I see subtitles or closed captions while watching movies instantly on my PC?

A: Foreign-language movies watched instantly on your PC will have subtitles. We don’t currently provide Closed Captioning, nor subtitling of English language movies, but you’ll find those on most of our DVDs.

The movies constantly change and if you look good enough you can find a few gems. Now the streaming resolution needs a little work or maybe I’m just spoiled by blueray.

I kinda have to agree with iName, I very very rarely play games online now. I love using my XBOX360 as a media center extender and for Netflix. My live renewal is coming up soon, and I’m kinda wishing I had gone for the PS3 now instead. Hopefully Microsoft will respond with some sort of middle of the road thing, because the $50 isn’t sensible when I can get a Roku and make that back in 2 years (or if I didn’t already have a console/media streamer spending the few extra dollars for a PS3 Slim and getting my Bluray/Netflix/Streamer all in one with no annual fees).

    *slight buyers remorse*

i have playon and it works. i like the idea of a software update instead of a disc, but until then this will be good for people who don’t want playon. the ideal situation is for sony to incorporate a program like playon on their console. it would make things easier and actually make the PS3 what it is supposed to be. i would love to get the windows machine away from my tv. after online video the only thing is making your having your digital media in a format the PS3 can play.

    i hope it happens.

$50/ year is not bad. So far they could have charged monthly and it would be worse.
You cant forget that the device us a gaming console. Others may buy it for a something else other than its main purpose and try to make it work for their need unfortunately, that does not work all the time.
No offense to anyone, just saying. As for the movie selections, the only reason why i have not gone there its because all the movies you can stream are old. I got comcast for that.
Best to set up a homeserver burn ur movies to that and stream them to your xbox 360.

Subtitles pending on how you encode them can be seen on ps3 or computer.. Some files require codec packs etc.. Really not that difficult.. Still the best console for movie watching is the original xbox..

This is nothing new, and totally stupid it took them this long to figure this out. You can use a nice little computer program called PlayOn, do the same thing and much, much more. Come on Sony, pull your head out of your _$$!

Awesome I have been hoping this was coming to the PS3. One question though, why not simply have an application that can be downloaded from the PSN store? Instead of having to a disc in all the time?
