BlackBerry OS 5.0 to be released for existing devices starting this week?
While the launch of the BlackBerry Storm2 on Verizon is widely expected to take place on October 28th and the Bold 9700 is so close we can almost taste it, owners of current generation BlackBerry smartphones — the Pearl Flip 8220/8230, Curve 8330/8350i/8900, Bold 9000, Storm 9500/9530 and Tour 9630 — should be pleased to note that RIM is all set for the launch OS 5.0. Specific dates aren’t easily pinned down as it more or less depends on the device one has and the carrier one is with, but thanks to our connects we know, for example, that Verizon will be dropping for the OS 5.0 for the Storm 9530 tomorrow evening with a fall back date set for Monday. Those that don’t have Desktop Manager set up on either their PC or Mac might want to get everything ready ahead of time as it looks for the most part that OTA software updates will not be made available. Oh well. OS 5.0 is oh so worth the hassle.
I would love to see an official version of 5.0 for the Verizon BB Tour, I have not been impressed with 4.7.1.40 as the boot time is horribly slow and the lag at times is annoying. I would welcome some stability to my device.

Just went to http://www.verizonwireless.com/storm and clicked on the software update and am currently installing the OFFICIAL 5.0.0.328 OS on my 9530 Storm!
Just to update – the official Storm 5.0 has been released by Verizon.

Att just released a new OS for the BOLD in who nows how long… now we are supposed to be expecting a 5.0 release soon? I think a November release would be very optimistic for Att devices. Oh well, as long as some carrier releases it it’s all good. 5.0 has been a long time coming!
The release of the 9700 does give me some hope though of an Att 5.0 release.
No mention of the new Curve 8520 which just came out? Why would the old Curve get the update and not the new one?
Wonder when 9500 users will get an update? Any idea what build will get released for Vodafone, India?

FYI to storm and Mac users. I have the storm. I could only update to 5.0 by going to my PC and updating through there. Mac does not have the necessary (whatever) to get it done. I called Blackberry and they helped me through it. 1.877.255.2377. So far the new 5.0 is smoother and takes less time.

Not a happy camper with the upgrade. Besides the fact that it took about an hour to complete the 11 downloads, I’m now faced with a frequent JVM (Java Virtual Machine?) white screen error.
Since I completed the upgrade, the phone has taken a timeout on me at least six times.
I guess I’ll pay bustout retail for the Droid after all.
Just spoke to Verizon Wireless Customer Support in regards to a Billing issue and asked if they had a release date. What I was told was the day before Turkey day, November 25th it will be available via Desktop Manager. I was warned that you willl need a good backup of your device, wipe it completely, upgrade and then restore your data. Do the upgrade with data and applications can cause the unit to seize up. Blackberry will be sending out a notification to all Blackberry tour owners detailing this process closer to the 25th. I think that I will just wait for the official release… heck it is only 3 weeks away and I am loooking forward to it if there are as many improvements as people are saying with the leaked versions…. If anyone finds anything different, would love to hear about it.
Well November is now upon us but those of us who don’t have a storm are still without OS 5.0 Has anyone heard anything else on a release date for the remaining compatable devices? I spoke the Verizon Tech Support today and they are blaming RIM for not releasing it to them..
