Apple reports Q4 earnings, exceeds estimates
Today’s earnings call with Apple has blown the minds of analysts as the Cupertino based company showed another strong quarter. Predictions for revenue was around $9.4 billion, but Apple topped it with $9.87 billion in revenue and a quarterly profit of $1.67 billion. Earnings per share is $1.82 where the consensus was at about $1.42 and whispers of $1.65. Strong sales pushed these substantial increases in profit: 3.05 million Macs (17% increase from last year), 10.2 million iPods (eight percent decrease) and 7.4 million iPhones (seven percent increase). Elated by the September quarter results, Apple CFO Peter Oppenheimer says, “For the full year, we grew revenue by 12 percent and net income by 18 percent in extraordinarily challenging times. Looking ahead to the first fiscal quarter of 2010, we expect revenue in the range of about $11.3 billion to $11.6 billion and we expect diluted earnings per share in the range of about $1.70 to $1.78.”
Is anyone really surprised? Amidst a recovering economy, Apple has been pulling impressive numbers and showing some solid growth.

seems to be the computers that are generating the most profit for them. Seeing as PC’s getting hammered right now i guess it makes sense.
My desktop PC.. multiple problems every year since I got it in 2003. My Mac Book Pro.. no problems after the last 2 years of heavy use I’ve put it through.
Mac may not be for everyone, but I’ll take no problems at all over saving 200-300 hundred dollars which will likely be exceeded in repair costs of all kinds that I would get with a PC at this point in time.
This is my view on Apple and its products.I do not own an iphone personally thats just not my thing i consider myself a techhead so the iphone just doesnt cut it for me anymore but i will always pay my respects to the Iphone because it was a game changer i mean there was nothing like it when it came out 3 years ago. Apple forced the other companies to step thier game up but that was then and because apple dominates the market as far as sales go they see no need to make any revolutionary changes to thier device they just continue to add features that should have been standard two years ago. So in summary enjoy ur Iphone but please dont walk around like u have a superior device when u see me pull out my Hero or Droid show some respect and put that thing away. BLEND OUT
I agree with Mtsunami31. Apple has become lazy. Instead of pushing their products further and further, they do nothing until other companies force them to. When the iPhone initially came out it was new and innovative, but every software update we see for it now is just something to catch back up to something new and innovative Google, Windows, or Linus has done. A recent review of Windows 7 from a VERY reputable Apple supporter has even mentioned this. Wish I could find the review to post it up for you guys.
Regardless of all that, this is why I won’t support Apple’s products. They’re great, but Apple doesn’t like to be innovative until they have to. I’d rather back a company that’s always taking strides and trying to improve it’s products.
Glansburg sucks dick for bus fare and walks home…
@cman
I agree their products are over-hyped and over-priced. i’m simply stating it’s not necessary to insult the people who buy the products just because it’s not that person’s flavor.
lets just stop all the hate and bashing around these great sites. if you only have negative things to say, keep it to yourself. keep a positive energy around here please
@Taylor
I think we all can accept an error or two when someone is “makeing” a point
;0)
for the record, i feel im pretty manufacturer agnostic. i buy based on a need vs functionality vs price. that generally ends with me not buying an apple product. doesn’t mean i wont though
I don’t think we have to tell the Apple haters how good their products are, the numbers talk for them selves.
Unfortunately, by this logic that means pop music is the best music out there. Fortunately, I’m a guitar teacher, and I know that just isn’t so.
Popularity = Mass Appeal
Popularity =/= Quality

You were never on a high-horse. As far as Microsoft, I never said I liked them. There are other platforms out there, as well as mobile platforms.
Apple’s strategy is simple. Charge a lot for a product and throw a lot of money at advertising because the consumer does not know the difference.
A study was done with several demographics of people. They put comparable products side-by-side and people chose the Apple product, based on price. There was no logo’s or anything, just the plain product. People have an obsession thinking that if something costs more, it’s better. That is wrong. When it comes to mp3 players, Creative blows Apple out of the water with quality, features, and price. You can’t look at the competitors and say to yourself, “I’d like to pay more and get less.” It is simply illogical.
You can compare cell phones. The iPhone vs Samsung, Nokia, even HTC. The competition has more features and costs less. So why do people buy Apple products? Advertising? Do people eat up that stuff. Or maybe it’s websites like Cnet.com and Phonedog.com that push it to the consumers.
Consumers are stupid, and Apple proves it. That is a good business model. Glad I’m on the end that can think for myself.
Why is it such a concern to us consumers that Apple is making money? I’m not really concernd with the future of Apple. I am only concerned with the iPhone I have now. If Apple went under today, it wouldn’t bother me. I would get another device. Just like everyone else.
Apple makes money because apple makes people money. All heavy duty graphic designers, musicians, dj’s, use macs. The iPhone has and can make a creative developer money. Bottom line is that the products work and work well.

I’m glad I contributed, got me a Macbook Pro and iPod Touch 32GB, u know what they say, once you go mac you wont come back, oh wait.
At first I wanted to respond to the points that people were trying to make in this thread, but that would just take too long. I started using a Mac about 3 weeks after Leopard came out and ever since I wouldn’t willingly switch back to a Windows computer as my main PC anytime soon, even though I’m running Windows 7 and like it – it’s just not as good as OSX.
The main point that I’m trying to make is that a lot of you that post here have turned the love for your tech “corners” into a religion. This is the same type of bashing that heavily-religious people use to smear other religions. As a Christian, I don’t believe that Jews are going to hell just because they are not baptised. I also don’t think that only stupid “idiots” “morons” “fanboys” buy Apple products. Nearly none of the anti-Apple comments above made any sense.
I say, to each his own. But trying to bash a company regarding (or in most cases on this site regardless of) their success is pointless. My father always uses the expression “vote with your dollars” and that is what many people did this past 3 months. They voted for Apple products to the tally of about ten billion in revenue.
I guess that all the pro and anti Mac hate here has blinded everyone to the fact that…
The accounting rules for Apple changed between the last quarterly report and this one. A large part of the increase in revenue is due to a change in how upgrades and future revenues are booked. More specifically, Apple is able to book upgrades immediately instead of amortizing them over several quarters. This makes for a very large single-report increase in revenue, but will not carry forward. In fact, if their next report is as good, THAT will be the real boost.
Sorry to let facts interfere with a good flame war. Back at it, fanboyz!

@Carmen
“Vote with your dollars”…That is a really bad analogy. Just because people do something, does not make it right. Being Sheeple is one thing. But going online and ranting about how you believe something is good, when clearly you’ve been drinking the cool-aid is ridiculous.
Apple Fanboys should be restricted to Cnet.
As for what s4r said earlier, they’re right. There are so many more companies out there making better products. Why do people go to Apple? Who the hell knows? Oh…………wait………”It just works.”
DroidDoes.com is something all iGnorant iPhone owners should look at.
it was a good time to buy apple stock back in march when it was a steal!!
@s4r
Yea there’s been bunches of studies like that. People truly do believe that $$$ means better product. Apple exploits that. So do many companies.
I agree theres much better products than iPods, but there’s also the “wow” factor that gave them the distinct advantage for years (still?). This caters more to the less technically-inclined, but we here all know to what degree it’s all smoke and mirrors ;0)
I believe that a lot of complaints in that respect ($) made about Apple can be made about Sony. They charge a premium on most of their products as well. And in most cases its product isn’t superior.
Maybe one of these days they’ll stop playing the underdog card and start paying dividends for their stock as their revenue stream has clearly hit stable enough territory to make that a reality. Of course that means they’d have to get off the ego-inflating growth stock train, so that’ll never happen.
From the sheer consumer side of things, I’m still amazed by their growth in the face of the broader economic realities. Perhaps it’s symptomatic of our culture’s whole spendy nature that got us into this economic mess in the first place. But as a capitalist I must tip my hat to them for playing the game well. They know how to make (and more importantly market) solid products. At some point they’re going to encounter the inevitable rival (most likely their former bff Google) or broader cultural backlash as they shift from underdog to establishment. But for the moment, the world is their oyster. Smoke em if you got em.
Didnt read the whole article but…
http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/09/10/19/apple_reveals_plans_for_cheaper_new_products_in_the_pipeline.html
They say lower price points in the future. We’ll see what the definition of lower prices is at Apple.
I too love my Powerbook, but hate the AT&T service I get on my iPhone.
Imagine if Apple only sold MacBooks or Powerbooks to people who used AT&T DSL? That would suck.
However, and a HUGE however….. We should not celebrate the fact that Apple gets away with overcharging consumers and makes a huge profit. That’s the stuff that their shareholders should get excited about.
We’re consumers. We should care what affects our wallet that that fat old guy wearing a suit on Wall St. Until Apple feels the pain, they will always overcharge for their products. They’ve enjoyed a good streak I’ll give them that but like all good things eventually it’ll come to an end.
Yes, even the iPhone will look like the RAZR does today. Overplayed.
apple got very good products no wonder they success on world market..
Not low enough for you… that is.
Quite frankly I want Apple to update its line-up more often even it means higher price.
The iPod & MacBook cycles are good. But the desktop and phone line could each use one more update per year.
