I was speaking from the standpoint of an integrated single-chip solution–in this case it appears Moto has added a TI OMAP 3 application processor to complement the CDMA baseband module.

Qualcomm also offers the Cortex A8 core in their Snapdragon SoC–which could arguably offer better battery life (single chip solution, smaller process?) and perhaps even better 3D (more advanced PowerVR core?)

Also, how much can/will the 3d games market develop? I played a couple games on an iPhone and was left wanting. i may be a little more hardcore than your average public (not too much tho) so i’d want the hard keys (a la PSP).
I jsut dont see the 3d game market on handsets getting much bigger than it is, nor do i see phones overtaking the PSP/DS/etc. as the better platform for 3d games. I can live without the ultra-uber graphics–uber is just fine with me

Phones that have similar processors are few and far between, because these processors are more expensive, and don’t have any marketable characteristics… it’s easier to throw an 800 MHz label on a cheap processor and gloss over the fact that it will kill battery life than to shell out the cash for a better processor with a much higher efficiency (processing power per watt).

The two phones that do have one that are on the market now are the Pre and the iPhone. New WM6.5 phones are also required to have the processor. These phones all boast high web rendering speed, good graphics capabilities, and more responsive user interfaces.

Some people are looking for the fabled “Snapdragon” processor, but while it sounds cool, it’s just a rebranded Cortex A8 with the clock speed cranked up to reach that magical 1GHz line. While they have made some modifications to reach this speed without having to crank up the voltage too much, my guess is that it will still be a bigger drain on the battery. I’ve had enough smartphones to realize that battery life is always at a premium. You can pretty much expect to have your battery running down by the end of the day, and you don’t want to wonder if your phone is going to work or not if you have a late night. TI does make a 1GHz OMAP processor that for all intents and purposes might as well be a snapdragon. There’s a reason why Motorola chose the more conservative model. If you do hold out for a Snapdragon, look for one with a bigger battery than the Motorola Droid.

The iPhone 3GS does have a slightly nicer GPU – theirs is capable of roughly twice the graphics performance (measured in triangles per second) – 14 million instead of 7 million. However, a quick search of “iPhone 3d game battery usage” immediately returns results calling it “questionably adequate” and similar. So again, I believe the lower powered GPU (still incredible compared to the rest of the mobile market) may have a significant impact on battery life, while still enabling next-generation mobile phone gaming.

All in all, I believe the processor on this phone may be the perfect mix of power and battery life for a mobile phone at this point in time. A corollary to that fact is: most current mobile phones, android or otherwise, are running on underpowered processors just to help the company’s bottom line. We can have better, we should demand it. Vote with your money. Buy a Motorola droid.

I don’t want to focus too much on the hardware at the moment, but you are correct. It is indeed running a TI OMAP processor.

There’s been multiple leaks on the processor spec front. General consensus is that it’s a TI OMAP 3430 processor. I’m one not to commit to believing until i see screenshots of the internals, or a site has reportedly seen the chip (or the settings of the phone displaying the info). BUT, in any case, if it is in fact the TI processor it IS ARM® Cortex™-A8

My criticism is just as strong for At&t, but you don’t get to see it because BGR is either funded by Verizon or just doesn’t like to report as frequently on matters containing At&t.

As far as the iphone goes… I wouldn’t go to a network that was GSM. I would rather control what phone I had rather than let the carrier decide for me.
