Reports: Snow Leopard randomly deleting user data

snow-leopard-guest-bug

This bug report has some serious teeth. Apple’s discussion boards have a growing number of reports claiming that user home folders are being automatically deleted when utilizing Snow Leopard 10.6’s “Guest” account login feature. Apparently one wrong click and a log in to the guest account can end in your actual user account folders being wiped out. Yikes. So far the only recourse has been for those who have recent backups on external media. There has been no acknowledgment of the issue from the Cupertino fruit company yet. We also apologize to any Sidekick, Mac OS X users, who log into Guest accounts — you’re having a tough week.

I am confused about the TRUE cost of owning a PC. Could someone please explain the extra cost involved? I own a PC and have not had any cost since I bought the machine 5 or 6 years ago. It still works fine so I am just confused and would like someone to explain to me what the TRUE cost is. Also, I am not a mac hater as I think mac laptops (all I have experience with) are great and work pretty much flawlessly. I will even say they work better than my windows laptop but not enough better for me to spend the extra money. Granted I used my laptop pretty much for surfing the web and checking email so I don’t need a powerful machine.

That’s just absurd to judge someone for using a product. It’s quite obvious that you don’t have a mac and need to grow some balls so your boyfriend can tickle them. Roflmao. Seriously, get a life.

I own a Mac, but I certainly am not pretentious enough to call a person poor or jealous because they choose not to like Macs. Perhaps there are a number of people that ave enough sense not to pay the kind of money we did for a computer that works for them.

@ anthony. I don’t completely agree with your assessment. While I do believe that the people who truly HATE on the Mac have probably never owned one, I dont think that ALL criticism is a direct result of jealousy of not being able to afford one or never owning one. I know a few people who have purchased Macs, loved them, but not enough to want to buy another for the price. For their needs, the extra cost for a Mac was not necessary and so they refuse to buy another. If thy were to come in here and mention cost, would you be so arrogant to call them poor or jealous too?

I just bought a Mac Pro for my office after suffering one more last time with a PC. I had a custom built laptop that was a waste of my $2200 from HP a few years ago…junk! My custom built desk top was also a waste of money…junk!. Both degraded quickly and never gave me 100% satisfaction for my music production and general office work. When I add up all the PC’s I’ve had over the years (4 at home right now), none of them hold a candle to my Mac Pro and I’ve only had it a week! I will never buy a Toshiba, HP or PC Club (who went out business) again. I’ve never had a PC last more than 2 years or a hard drive or power pack for that matter let alone the machine staying current. It seems that with PC, 6 months later it’s obsolete. Can’t use the mother board, can’t add more ram etc etc. The last blue screen episode had me seeing RED! I swore I would not spend another dime on PC’s.

Looked at my buddies Mac he’s had for 5 years which works flawlessly even today, plus his new desktop and laptop and that was enough. I went to the Apple store the next day and spent nearly $3800 for my machine. I will soon sell my Vaio laptop for a mac laptop too. The other desk top will be used as a gaming machine which is all it’s good for.

I had always shied away from Macs before this episode of meltdown. Prior to that you would always here me say I hated Macs due to me using one of their retarded imac some years ago. Now that I took a really good look at their Pro machines and now own one, I feel stupid for staying with PC for so long.

When you get a Mac and see the quality that goes into making the tower, the board and ease of installing peripherals, you know someone went to a lot of trouble to design it. Not like the lazy crap I’ve seen on PC’s with sloppy work as a standard.

I’m just calling it as I see it. No emotion, no insulting anyone just plain fact. If you’ve had a PC with no problems over the years then stick with it. If you want something better and can afford it, you won’t regret buying a Mac. My keyboard is so much quieter and I can type faster plus the machine itself doesn’t sound like a running generator. It’s very quiet and not hot like my PC which needed a fan running behind the power pack it just to stop me worrying it was going to blow up again!

Well enough said. I am a convert, love my Mac and won’t go back to PC even if they were free and my name is Mat B.
    Peace-

Macs look good, everyone knows that. They are overpriced too, as everyone also knows. The thing I can’t get over is the missing right mouse button!

    Mat B says:

I had that feeling with the mouse too but just used my old mouse as I like the right button too much to give it up. However the machine is expensive but so are Rolls Royce’s, Porches and any other high end performance car you care to mention.

I would pay more for my Mac if it does what I want when I want. PC just doesn’t cut it and I have spent enough on them to know that I wasted my money. I would rather have a well built machine that lasts me years than spend money on a machine that lasts 1-2 years and gives me trouble the whole time I have it.

I just bought my Mac 1 week ago and I’m already loving it. Maybe too early to really be 100% behind it but I am really impressed so far!!!

You’d best get over it, as Macs have been shipping with multi-button mice since 2005.

Oh, and people using “gay” as a pejorative seriously need to grow the fuck up. What is this, grade school?

There is a bug in Snow Leopard. There are bugs in every operating system. That does not mean that Macs are overpriced status symbols for A&F-wearing “fruitcakes.” The reverse (that everybody who doesn’t love Macs must not be able to afford one and is somehow lesser for it) is also not true, obviously.

I have a Mac mini. It was $550, which I don’t think is an outrageous sum for a computer, even for my poor student self. I like it, not because I’m gay, but because it does what I need it to do without much fuss. If someone likes fussing with Windows, or if the Mac doesn’t do what somebody needs it to, then it’s totally understandable why that person would choose Windows. Different strokes…

Exactly! That describes my PC/Mac experience almost exactly.

And I’m also not gay. If I were, so what? That’s a bad thing?

Oh man I wish bonesby really would kick that guy’s ass and post it on youtube.

Or at least, I wish these assholes who call us fags because we like Macs, or BlackBerry Bolds, or whatever, would have to insult me like that to my face. They wouldn’t. Fucking cowards.

I’d comment here more often if every post didn’t dissolve into some mess of carrier/platform fanboy mudslinging. Oh, and how BGR “is bias.” Can’t forget that.

Let the record show that if you picked a side in this, you’re an idiot.

All this shows is that there’s no such thing as an infallible company; anybody who thought otherwise deserves exactly what they’re getting.

Somewhere, somebody screwed up. Apple will eventually acknowledge and fix it. Three months from now (at most), 90% of people won’t even remember.

Get the fuck over yourselves, fanboys. You’re all idiots. You don’t realize that this constant competition between companies is good for everyone, whether your computer has a fruit on it or not.

such a shame that in every blog discussion there are those who use profanity and hurl insults because they can be done so without fear of getting smacked in the mouth. They can cheerfully hide behind their computers and spew hate from their one celled myopic brain. What would their parents think if they could read some of their posts? I’m sure no one was raised to such low standards and mentality and I for one would be ashamed if I saw such posts from a kid of mine. A good whooping would ensue.

Remember folks, your words represent what kind of person you are and sometimes, just sometimes, those words are going to come back and haunt you.

No point posting more hate about this post as I will not see them. I’m out of here….

Macs suck period. I can afford one and I’ve used them. I don’t want one. I work in IT and have to support an art dept with 20 Macs. More headaches than PC’s without a doubt. One mac at home might be fine but in a business when connected to a domain w/ active directory forget about it. Just changing the user password is a hassle. Macs are for daycare centers. Don’t know why they’re more expensive either… The OS is cheaper & all the guts now use the same parts as PCs. You guys are just getting burned and love taking it up the ass.

    Hey bobalay -

    You fucking asshole.

I hurl profanities because you do douchebag.

My wife works for a company that has more than 1000 employees and a very strong IT department like you supposedly do. Guess what? In spite of their herculean efforts to save her POS PC, a virus got in, grabbed her bank info and paypal info, $3,000 gone. Being reimbursed by the bank/paypal but it’s a cluster fuck. And they thought they had the problem contained.

I own my own tiny business. We’ve had 3 Macs and not a single issue. All of this shit about pc vs. Mac and iPhone vs. BlackBerry is anecdotal. Kinda like religion. But I’m with Mat B. Why does everyone have to be gay or an asshole because they prefer a particular product?

Boy Genius – oh never mind.

As Scott the Engineer once observed, fuck everyone.
