Geohot unleashes blackra1n upon iPhone OS 3.1.2

blackra1n

Following up on the success of purplera1n, iPhone hacker extraordinaire geohot has released a jailbreak solution for OS 3.1.2 dubbed blackra1n. Currently only being offered to Windows users, blackra1n works on all generations of the iPhone and iPod touch, although the 3rd gen iPod touch needs to be tethered. The installation method for blackra1n is unchanged from that of its predecessor meaning that all you really have to do is download and install the app to your PC, plug in your device and make it ra1n. Good luck!

    Has anyone had a problem after jailbreaking their iPhone? I’d do it but I’m worried about bricking mine.

    @darkpoet,

    jailbreaking is pretty easy. Just FOLLOW the directions and you’re good to go. And if anything bad happens just restore in iTunes and start over

    Small problem I’ve found.

    It seems running blackra1n in a VM is a no go. It crashes the app. Your phone is fine, but the app doesn’t work and your phone is not jailbroken.

    Nevermind I STRONGLY ADVISE YOU TO NOT JAILBREAK WITH BLACKRA1N.
    MANY USERS ARE REPORTING THAT THEIR DEVICE GETS STUCK ON THE iTUNES-USB SCREEN!!

    Are you using tethering with pdanet or the “regular” way thru general>settings>network…?

    Upgraded to 3.1.2 from 3.0.1 and jailbroke using blackra1n this morning. The jailbreak was fine, but I’m really regretting leaving 3.0.1 with tethering and having to reinstall all this crap. The updates aren’t really worth it.

    @Joe the Plumber: Yeah, and you just reset it and try again.

    I hung for a bit, reset, and tried it again and it worked like a charm. Without a doubt the fastest and easiest jailbreak I’ve ever done.

    Joe the Plumber and 1jaxstate1, thanks for the input. tande04 thanks for the headsup. When I get a chance I will give it a shot. One last question, if I do need to reset it, will I lose my contacts?

    @tande04

    After 10 resets I came to the realization that iTunes has to be closed for this to work. :)

    @darkpoet
    No you won’t lose your contacts. Provided you’ve already synced in iTunes

    Oops, I didn’t mean reset but I meant restoring through iTunes losing my contact information. I have the rest backed up on there.

    Only n00bs straight up Brick their phones. Although I do have to say the whole jailbreak scene has brought out a lot of n00bs. People who have to Tech clue, think they have a clue just cause of the whole pwned culture. Its funny seeing ‘Them” instantly upgrade the OS everytime, then having the whole unlocking issue or whatnot. Go n00bs!!

    Firmware 3.0.1 to 3.1.2
    OS: Windows 7 64Bit Build 7100
    Antivirus Avast Home Edition

    The first time I tried the jailbreak it failed. I believe that the antivirus may have blocked blackra1n fucntionality but I am not sure. I also had iTunes running.

    The second time I tried I stopped my antivirus and closed iTunes. So far, everything is running smooth. I will see if i change the carrier settings back to the moded ATT 6.0 carrier settings.
