WSJ: Dell to build Android smartphone for AT&T

dellsmartphone

Apparently when Dell went from carrier to carrier offering offering to make them handsets they weren’t as unsuccessful as we thought, for the Wall Street Journal has it on good authority that AT&T has commissioned Dell (where have we heard this before?) to make them an Android handset. Specifics are lacking at this point in time, but the device is reputed to be somewhat similar to the Mini 3i that Dell recently launched with China Mobile, in that it will have a “touch screen instead of a keypad as well as a tiny camera.” Alrighty. Now if you’ll excuse us, we have some Dell and AT&T ninjas to lean on for some intel.

    They used to have top of the line PDA’s with the 624mhz CPU and then adding the Video to the “V” series. I would assume they should make good Android powered devices as well.

    Saw that on Marketwatch earlier. Dell making phones…? They need to learn how to make computers first.

    You’re an idiot. First learn how to spell and then get your head out of your ass. No wonder you own an iPhone.

    @Mitsu8,

    I forgot a “p”, well excuse me, spelling Nazi. And what’s wrong with owning an iPhone? Maybe some people like it. No need to hate. And maybe I want a good Andriod device on the network I like. But thanks for being an ass hole ;)

    @Scott,

    Dell’s Axim X50v and X51v were arguably some of the best non-phone Windows Mobile devices ever. Nothing junk about them. If the quality of their Android phone is anywhere near the quality of the Axim’s this could easily become the best Android phone on the market (not that there is a lot of competition for that title at this point).

    I just hope that it doesn’t look like the render above, that thing looks worse than Paris Hilton on an all night coke binge.

    I’m a psychic I knew this was going to AT&T. Maybe it will look better I’m sure that picture is a prototype.

    @Carl,

    I just don’t trust their build quality. Look at their computers. They just fall apart. I think if you were to ask a group of people, they would put Dell with Bargin or cheaper, I don’t think you would get many that would say Dell = quality. I, personally, wouldn’t own any thing Dell. I have to use their PCs at my job and from that experience alone, I do not like the Dell brand.

    What’s with at&t taking in these companies that are switching from one niche to another, like Garmin? Now Dell?

    Fall apart? I’ve yet to see a Dell do that.
    I have nothing against HP, but that’s what seems to come through here the most for repairs. HP’s and Compaq’s.
    And come to think of it, I haven’t had a Dell laptop to repair for months. HP and Acer mainly.

    Pretty cool. I am curious how it will be, thought my eye right now is on the HTC HD2.

    To the dude saying that dells fall apart, are you throwing them down the stairs or something? My dell inspiron laptop lasted me from 2003 until 2009. That was lugging it to school on a daily basis, dropped it a couple of times, and spilled water all over it. Only reason I don’t use it anymore is because my work bought me a new laptop, which also is a Dell.

    You would have to be a fool to have service with at&t if you don’t want an i-phone why pick this company.

    king, not everyone has a bad experience with AT&T. Just because you have had one, or their service isn’t that great in you area doesn’t make them the worst phone company in the world.

    Not so sure about the look of that phone. Though I am interested to see what Dell comes up with. Computers are one thing, but a cell phone? Seriously hope they can at least make the thing look more attractive then the picture!
