Bell and TELUS to offer the iPhone next month?

bellus

Not super excited about the November launch of Bell’s HSPA network? Fair enough, but we think you’ll change your mind once we tell you what The Globe and Mail is reporting: both Bell and TELUS are going to be selling the Apple iPhone next month. Apple, Bell and TELUS declined to speak to the matter when asked, but the fact remains that not only does this make sense considering the fact exclusivity deals are already starting to fizzle out in the UK, but for the simple fact that if The Globe and Mail says its going to happen you can confidently bet your bottom dollar that it will happen 99 times out of 100. If not, we’re going cancel our subscription for our Canadian office. Rogers, we are awaiting emails from your PR people.

Thanks, Scott, and everyone else who sent this one in!

You’ll see a Verizon iPhone before a T-Mobile iPhone. Guaranteed. Why do you think T-Mobile is so invested in Android? It works for them…idiot.

Oh and the iPhone 3G/3GS being sold in China is not a totally new iPhone: it just has WiFi disabled. Look it up on the GSMA…idiot.

I was implying that YOU would say they needed to redesign it to support China’s network bands, which they didn’t you fool.

Are you kidding me? A CDMA iPhone would require more extensive modification’s, a T-Mobie iPhone would NOT.

The China iPhone is GSM/WCDMA and operates on the 900MHz, 1,700MHz and 1,900MHz bands.
    - How did they do it?! You should be stumped.

Wow, already half way there. They must have had this planned and in testing from 2006 to make sure it would work properly, it’s srs bzns!

As everyone should know by know, the iPhone 3G/3GS is coming to China Unicom, the nation’s second largest mobile operator. China Unicom went with the 3G 2100 Eurasian standard in addition to their already deployed GSM 900. 1700 and 1900 are almost-exclusively at North American standard.

Also, everyone knows a CDMA iPhone would take more modifactions than a T-Mobile iPhone would; why else hasn’t it happened yet aside from a so-called exclusivity nobody has seen?

That still doesn’t negate my first point that there’s not going to be a T-Mobile iPhone. Sure they have 33-million customers, but how many would actually use an iPhone? There’s a reason why Apple didn’t include the 1700 band in the 3GS – because it financially doesn’t make sense.

According the the Globe and Mail:

Apple, based in Cupertino, Calif., demands strict terms from wireless companies carrying the iPhone, which limit the carriers’ ability to cut prices or differentiate their subscription plans significantly.

Ugh.. It’s not included because the iPhone is exclusive to AT&T in the US and T-Mobile USA is the only carrier to use the band, so why would they support a device that isn’t supported by the carrier?

Wow all these Americans fighting because of an iPhone rumour.

If Verizon gets the iPhone, it will certainly be an LTE version. Everybody except Sprint is heading towards LTE anyways.

    “On Oct 5, 2009 @ 8:06 pm, rctennis Said:

Considering no other nationwide carrier in the US uses HSPA 850/1900, it’s likely the iPhone will stay with at&t for awhile..”

^^That was my point the ENTIRE time.

There is a possibility that a T-Mobile US compatible
    iPhone could be made.

WIND Mobile is a new carrier set to launch in Canada in the near future. They bought a bunch of spectrum that is the same 1700mhz that T-Mobile US uses for their HSPA network. But WIND, unlike T-Mo, will not be able to use the current iPhone on EDGE as WINDs network ous 100% 3G (as is Bell and TELUS’ new network).

Although an iphone for Verizon would be nice it is not necessary. With all the other options that are out (yes storm and storm2) among all the others by HTC, there really is no need for the iphone now.

    watbetch says:

No your point was why doesn’t it have the band now, and I told you why. You said that making one altogether was not a possibility and you also implied that the iPhone would stay at AT&T for a long time which is just speculation

No but Apple sure isn’t gonna make a special HSPA 1700 version of the iPhone just or T-Mobile…

They actually already have a WCDMA version as mentioned before.

I love how everyone’s ready to latch on to Bell/TELUS because they’re getting the GSM *overlay*… (btw, Josh Stansfield, Bell/TELUS require contracts too…)

Take a look at the numbers… Rogers GSM is currently 7.something. Upgraded soon, according to their site to 21.something for their rocket stick. Bell/TELUS? 3.something. How is that faster again?

On top of that, any time new tech is launched, there are bugs and issues (xbox 360 anyone?).

So what? They’re going to launch an overlay, which by definition is not as good as the real thing, on top of cdma tech which is more than likely going to give them issues for the first few years and is also not going to be as fast… What are we excited about again?

Sure, you can use the iphone and bold on it… If you want slower than dial-up speeds. Have fun!

You don’t know much. The Telus/Bell network is hspa+ which is the 21mbps service. And that’s everywhere at launch, rogers is only hspa+ in 6 major cities. Maybe you should have read someother information before you start spouting off about 3mbps.
