Motorola Droid will be Verizon’s Android handset from Motorola?

We just received word from a tipster that the much-awaited Motorola Sholes or Motorola Tao will actually be called the Motorola Droid on Verizon Wireless. The above information is not confirmed at this time, but we have independently confirmed that regardless of whatever name Verizon (or Moto) chooses to run with, their Motorola Android handset will not run MOTOBLUR. It will be a straight with Google device and will be the first Google Experience handset to offer built-in Adobe Flash support natively.
We have heard that the announcement will be made not next week but the week after.
UPDATE: We’ve been given specifications for the handset:
- 3.7″ screen
- 854×480 WVGA capacitive screen
- 5 megapixel camera
- ARM Cortex 500MHz CPU
- Facial recognition using the built-in camera (apparently you take a photo of someone and Google will pull in search results based on the image)
- Custom Motorola Interface/UI, no MOTOBLUR, no Verizon UI
- Available in black and titanium colors
We’ve also been told there will be a keyboard-less version that’s planned for 2010.

That’s better than the Sholes.
Who cares what it’s called? I want to know the release date.
At this point, I could care less what they name it (but Tao was cooler, for the record) so long as they release it soon.
Freebase Anroid is a plus in my book, I don’t need any of those fancy-pants UI enhancements.
That’s better than tao.
The street is LAME-O
Droid is fine with me. I’m more excited about this…

I just hope it’s not the knock off version of Flash support that the HTC Hero for Sprint is running (Adobe Flash Air). That would be a disappointment.
@ BG
Any word on the exact Flash player it will support?
This is very exciting news for us Verizon hopefuls. This is just the beginning of what is expected here at Verizon. More goodies are on the Horizon.

So do you have any info about this device like a release date perhaps?
And do you actually work for Verizon? Or are you just a super fan of the company?
Droid does sound a great deal better than the Sholes or even Tao. Where do they come up with these names.
HTC Predator (If it comes to reality) will probably be the best named phone in a while.
I like the name Droid and I cannot wait for this phone to come out on Verizon. Suppose to be really thing with a full qwerty. Fingers crossed I hear something soon!

Perhaps Motorola is okay since this is Science Fact rather than Science Fiction.

Sir, I actually work for Verizon…Look me up. As of a release date it is not certain yet but I wouldn’t be surprised if it were released sometime in late december towards early next year Q1.

I really hope it doesn’t take that long to launch this device on Verizon. I am a current Verizon customer, so I would like to see an early release like Oct/Nov.

speaking of the Tour, i really looked up to this,(as our fellow BGR community can attest to that) and its less then we hoped for and a truly overrated device. I’m @ my third unit already. and Ive came to a point that it isn’t worthed changing it for a 4th one. the bottom of the device gets very warm and overheats constantly, plus, the browser is even worse then on the Curve. many web pages are rendered with one line overlapping on the other, giving you a bad reading experience, did i mention the trackball? forget it. vertically it literally dosent move!
i wonder, since you are a ‘verizon guy”, and a user, whats your take on that. thanks
unfortunately whatever we think the release date will be, it will probably be later than that.
500Mhz processor is the only thing that I am not feeling right now. Everything else is great as far as specs go. Especially that beautiful 3.7″ 854×480 WVGA capacitive touchscreen (which is a higher resolution than the HTC TP2 and HTC Imagio).
500MHz? Will that be able to function efficiently enough to render Flash relatively quickly?
Posted from a local bar in alphabet city
It’s a ARM Cortex processor, 500mhz should be plenty for Android.
@ Dave
I don’t think so. I’m betting that there will probably be some lag in this device when it comes to flash video.
@ evan
I know it’s a ARM Cortex processor, but 500Mhz is 500Mhz and when it comes to flash, the processor speed needs to be there on a mobile device because it doesn’t have much RAM like regular computers do. I don’t think anybody is doubting the fact that 500Mhz will be enough for Android to run (especially with no MotoBlur) but the point is, people would like to see little to no lag in their devices now a days. 600Mhz processor would have been great.
I’ll take what I can get because this device looks like it has some potential. I just hope the graphics are good in this device because it is supposed to be a gaming device as well.
Wow. A Verizon phone I really like. The MoTOBLUR is chilish in my opinion with all of the constant twitter and facebook crap. I think the normal android interface is just fine as you have more control over how it works for you. Plus you get flash? Sounds like a winner to me. That was really tough for me to type btw because i’m still not a verizon fan.
I am pretty sure its rumored to have a 600Mhz processor, where did you hear 500Mhz? Every report I have seen says 600Mhz.
Droid…haha…that’s perfect..
Droid rules
Can someone kindly get pics and info. to us on the HTC desire/predator, so we can compare phones. I am hoping the HTC will be similar to the Hero.
Verizon Guy–Please?
