AT&T’s upcoming Windows Mobile handsets: HP Obsidian, LG Monaco

att-winmo-fall-roadmap-small

One of our ninjas just blessed us with a look at a portion of AT&T’s Windows Mobile road-map for the rest of the year. Quickly glancing at it we can see that the AT&T Tilt 2 will obviously launch in October, and refreshingly, the Samsung Epix and Samsung Jack will be getting upgrades to Windows Mobile 6.5 courtesy of upcoming maintenance releases. What’s more exciting, however, are the HP Obsidian and LG Monaco launches. While not brand new to the world, it’s nice to know that these Windows Mobile business-focused handsets will finally see the light of day come November. We know October is going to be full of 6.5 handsets like the Tilt 2 and Pure, and November shows no signs of slowing down either. Here’s a quick refresher on specifications for the LG Monaco and HP Obsidian and a larger shot after the break:

HP Obsidian:

  • GSM/GPRS/EDGE/UMTS/HSDPA (850/1900/2100MHz)
  • Bluetooth 2.0
  • Wi-Fi b,g
  • QWERTY keyboard
  • microSD slot
  • GPS
  • 3.5mm headset jack
  • Windows Mobile 6.5

LG Monaco:

  • GSM/GPRS/EDGE/UMTS/HSDPA (850/1900/2100MHz)
  • Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR
  • Wi-Fi b,g
  • Slide-out full QWERTY keyboard
  • GPS
  • 5 megapixel autofocus camera

    This is a Windows Mobile roadmap, not smartphones in general. This might be indicated by the first line of the post, stating “One of our ninjas just blessed us with a look at a portion of AT&T’s Windows Mobile road-map for the rest of the year.”

    @mangenius
    I was thinking the same thing. Grammatical errors make me smell BS.

    Internal documents routinely have many grammatical errors.

    We should have been able to buy an Unlocked North American 3G version sporting the 850/1900/200 Bands months ago. I wish HTC would quit bending over for AT&T. AT&T doesn’t really care about the Touch Pro 2 (Tilt 2) all that much anyway so long as it has the I-Phone.

    All I can say is that I hope AT&T hasn’t screwed up the keyboard or isn’t going to offer that stupid burgandy color keyboard we saw months ago.

    The Tilt 2 better damn well have the 3.5mm jack also.

    I feel a fail coming with ATT and typical lack of 3.5 mm jack.

    I though I saw somewhere that the 3.5 were only going to be in the CDMA versions of the Touch 2, while the GSM counter parts did not. Something about the size of the radio chip or something.

    Personally, I think AT&T and Apple are conniving, money, and power hunger brats. As long as iPhone is making money for AT&T, AT&T couldn’t careless about HTC. By pricing it high, average buyers could afford to buy this(why should they $1.99 vs $2.99) and will not have a chance to own the BEST(in my opinion) phone ever on the market. Apple is threatened by HTC, and if AT&T doesn’t kiss big Apple’s ass. Apple will take their phone to another network. How unfortunate, but seriously, even Ray Charles could see this.

    @ BG: It’s hard to believe grammatical errors are acceptable in any real business plan internal or not. When I see misspellings on documents from a business, the first thing I think of is “bogus”. Not saying that this document is phony, but…

    @Blogger,

    uh, the touch 2 is 349 after rebate on both Sprint and T-mobile, so I think the high price has more to do with HTC and not so much with Apple and AT

    Just to let you know that HTC has added the 3.5 jack to its new line. Is this all you can come up with to compare it to the iphone. Wow!
    Using WM for a few years now and pretty happy with it, as for getting the iphone 3g… well I tried it and sold it.
    Couldn’t keep files on SD card the way WM does and can’t sync the same without everything going through that stupid itunes thingamaggig’

    Anyone know if AT&T will provide 6.5 upograde for the HTC Fuze and other phones running earlier versions?

    Also,
    If the phone has a hardware password (enforced by a corporate Exchange server) will the user be able to make an outgoing call w/o unlocking the phone? (as you can with most Balckberries?)

    There is an “unofficial” release of 6.5 already out there (http://www.mysamsungepix.com/windows-mobile-6-5/windows-mobile-6-5-unofficially-available-for-samsung-epix/#comments). There is also a pretty good video of how it works (http://www.tombeauchamp.com/2009/08/put-windows-mobile-6-5-on-the-epix/). As to whether it fixes some of the problems with 6.1 is still up in the air. Probably safer to wait until the official release comes out and the download/flash is offered.

    The LG Monaco sounds great..But I want to know when it will be released, I want to get it for Christmas. Does anyone know? Please tell me. Also if you know where I could get user feedback, etc. The AT&T website has nothing on it yet since it hasn’t released..I just want an AT&T phone with a good camera (better than 2 megapixels), a full QWERTY keyboard, and touchscreen. Any suggestions, please tell.
