Apple kills 40GB Apple TV; 160GB model now $229

apple-tv

Ahh, Apple TV. The bastard child of Apple’s portfolio. Some live and die by it, some fall into a deep sleep upon simply hearing its name uttered but most just don’t care about it one way or the other. If you always found Apple’s set top offering somewhat interesting but couldn’t rationalize dropping $229 on the 40GB model or $329 on the 160GB model, a small overnight shake up may interest you. The aforementioned 40GB has now gone the way of the Dodo, leaving but one size to fit all. More importantly, the 160GB version that remains now sits at the $229 price point vacated by the smaller model. It’s nice to see the product priced more reasonably but the fact remains — subscription services like Netflix streaming and integrated options afforded by products like LG’s BD390 pique our interest far more than Apple’s offering will any time soon.

Thanks to everyone who sent this in!

I have never understood what the HD size mattered for. I have aprox 1500 movies and aprox 100 TV shows on my PC that stream to Apple TV’s around my house. I have 5 of them. You can watch the same movie on all 5 or 5 diferent movies on each as well. The HD could never hold all multi TB’s of data the video’s take up. I NEVER save any content on the Apple TV HD’s and dont understand why you would. Even 160 GB is small if your really going to use the thing.

Jon, you answered your own question.

Apple TV HD size is irrelevant to you since you appear to already have a mass storage device/’jukebox’ that you can stream from. But other people may not have the money/resources for that kind of set-up; other people are not savvy enough to even know how to do things like that. So those are people who do care about the HD size because they want the simply all-in-one solution.

Actually, you also revealed the folly of your system: Why are you purchasing Apple TV devices w/ HDDs inside if all you need is a device to stream from? Something tells me 5 slingplayers would have been more effective/prudent. Heck, 5 standalone Media Center boxes could have done the same thing. Heck, you could have bought 5 Xbox 360s and do the same thing AND play video games. LOL.

But I don’t know, that’s just my initial thought. I don’t know you or the details of where you live and what you own, so maybe I’m not getting something. (I’m also not looking up the costs, so maybe it all works out to be the same price?)

Anyway, my favorite is to walk into an Apple store (this is the only reason I walk into Apple store), then go to the Apple TV display in which I do a search for Techno Viking on youTube (the mashup ones featuring Bake A Cake or Right Said Fred). I turn up the volume then leave the store.

I would have done the sling box butI had my current system before sling had HDMI and before much of the better stuff out now was out. Now Im kind of trapped. Im looking for a better solution. Apple sure does make it easy to buy digital movies. My next solution has to be stable and you have to be commited or else It forces me to have to re rip 1000 or so movies. Thanks for your comments.
